Station Signage

Here are a couple of strangely worded signs:

Dún Laoghaire - surely they mean that smoking is not permitted, rather than letting passengers know that they are allowed to not smoke!

Athenry - would the lift not be out of service due to the LACK of essential maintenance?

A man after my own heart.

Great examples.

Hope I'm not breaking any rules here, but it anyone would like to shuffle through the misery of political toilet paper that has been handed out on this fine island since Moses was a youngfella, check out this blog - http://irishelectionliterature.wordpress.com/

It might make for interesting time placement of a layout, but perhaps too fixed. If anyone wants one to suit a billboard poster that can be moved about, PM me and I'll sort it out. Richie

It's pure mad altogether, but a nice blast from the past all the same. Here's one I did for FrankS for the craic, don't ask me how I got the most elusive font on the planet...... R

You lucky lucky boy!! How the HELL did you get that font? Knowing your IT skills you probably scanned, traced and developed your own *.ttf file!

Very nice.

Lads one mistake, we drive on the other side of the road here:o

Ha ha, I have been notified about this "oversight" on my part - i don't drive - but the twishty roads around the dingle tend not to have markings, nor room for another vehicle to pass - take note german tourists going the wrong way round the ring of kerry when the bus eireann + rear convoy has to reverse :((, so i'll fix the image, and possibly stick a few sheep in the background? Would happy come your way then?

Wasn't easy, and IE ain't helping. But if I get a full alphabet font [still missing G, X,W,Y,Z etc.] I'll let you know des. You "may" have use for it!

I came across the website of the company who designed the font a while back. They had samples of all the characters on it. Damned if I can remember what the URL was, though... :(

Alan Fitzpatrick did the font for Creative Inc., a rehash of CIE2000 that was the previous font. It has nor ever will be distributed, except to pro printers for Annual Reports etc.

http://www.creativeinc.ie/index.php/portfolio/detail/iarnrod_eireann

Hmm....

I did a bit of research on these 'fonts' or typefaces, a while back.

Tony Fahy designed the original font called CIE 2000, often referred to as CIE2K. IE slapped this font everywhere on everything, unfortunately, it had not been designed for signage, and proved borderline unreadable at certain sizes and distances - as a driver of an oversized vehicle that got wedged under a bridge claimed, that he couldn't read the height info on the sign until it was a bit too late.

Alan Fitzpatrick revisited the font with a view to actually working out what, where, and when it would be used for, and redesigned it accordingly, unfortunately the redesigned font was named Nexus Sans.... Nexus Sans was the name of an already existing font - so searching for 'Nexus Sans' and thinking 'Hey! Hey! I found it' will almost certainly lead to disappointment.....

....and life went on, much as it had before - in total confusion.

Nope. Since it's not available to purchase there are no licensing issues I'm breaching. Second, I'm not actually using the font, I'm recreating it, and all the work is mine. Third - I'm not distributing it at all, not even for profit, and lastly I'm not gaining in any way financially from it.

If I were hawking repro signs to the likes of Bracken, passing them off as originals, then I'd be in for the high jump. After all it's for tiny card signs for model railways!

so what your saying is once you don't profit from something its OK to copy it

No, that's not what I'm saying. If it's a registered trademark, such as Guinness or Coca-Cola, you cannot use it without permission. You can buy a blank t-shirt and spray the guinness logo on if you want, i doubt they'll get lawyered up and tell you to bin it. You start making Guinness tee-shirts, giving them out free or for money, and you're in trouble.

Now items such as IE logos are not protected in the same manner since they are "corporate branding" and not registered. They may send you a "cease and desist" if whatever practice you are engaged in does not conform to their corporate image or if you are "passing off" items claiming to be theirs. Like if you made mugs with their logo, they'd be entitled to come after you.

When it comes to Hornby and Bachmann etc, say using the DB Shenker Logo, they do not pay either. There are agreements - Memoranda of Understanding - between the two that limit how logos are used for the model maker, but DB Shenker inherently get free advertising from the model. So it's a horse trade, and each deal between a model maker and corporate will be different. If it were punitive and costly to get their logo used, we'd have nothing but copyright expired steam era companies to work with and no Virgin Voyagers etc.

When it comes to IE logos for decals, you do not have to ask permission. Because the creator of the work is the decal maker, by research, drawings and graphic work. He is the originator of it. That's why he has a big ass copyright sign on all his decal sheets.

Bottom line is that as long as you do all the hard graft yourself and can prove with certainty that you are the originator, you are fine. Also if you stick a guinness sign on a Fitzgeralds Pub, you don't have to get permission either, because it is part and parcel of the look - you are not advertising guinness.

I have the case-law references if you want them for both UK and Ireland. Both my brothers are solicitors, one in London specialising in Intellectual Property and the other here with a masters in copyright law. Christmas dinner is mighty craic altogether!

Does that make sense or I have just made things more confusing?

Richie.

I find the whole grey area of copyright fascinating. A friend of mine in Denmark was sued successfully for 20K when he photoshoped a woman he photographed into one of his arch vis images which was used for publication. The argument went that since the original photo was taken out of context with out permission it was deemed illegal.....when I think of all the times I've done it myself!!

As Scahalane says its a grey area I know of one decal manufacture in the UK who asked EWS could they produce their logo as a decal and was told no. Also I know that the likes of Fox decals also have had to seek permission from UK rail company's to produce their logo on decals. Anyway as you said your not making anything on it so shouldn't be a problem.

Richie, another sign for your collection. Its from Killiney station. I've only seen these signs at Killiney, there are two there one on the Up platform and one on the Down side. Strangely they are both only in Irish - there is no English version. For scaleing, the full brick directly below the sign is 9 inches wide.Sign - No Kites.jpg

Evening All,

I've been working on putting together packs of signage for buildings and stations, and I have assembled a ton of them. They'll be split into relevant time periods to suit. I'm hoping that I'll have them all finished about a week before Christmas, so you ye can liberally decorate your buildings, platforms, and car parks with IE signs, turkey leg in gob.... :P

These packs will be free incidentally - no restrictions on use!

However, there are plenty quirky ones still out there that I'd like to put into the packs. As photos or whatever, they don't have to be perfect just a bit straight-on would help. Trawl around, post up what ye have, it's all for a good cause.

"Each year an Irish Model Railway Layout needlessly starves. This Christmas, Please, give what you can."

Richie.

Unfinished Samples below, but the finished ones will be to 00 scale. Over two hundred in total so far....

Are these packs still available.??

Can't find any download links.

Thanks,

Wiggy.

Looking at anything from 1995 to present day.

North & South.

Mainly station and depot signage.

Line side as well.
