Glenderg
jesus...the mind boggles at this! if the wagon had a flying snail logo i'd say it could be a military train during the emergency! - fantastic pic dave=D Had a root through some military books here, and the searchlights are what were called 90cm Projector Anti - Aircraft, and the supporting generators on the lowmac flat wagons were two wheeled Lister JP4 9 Kw Generators. There is a supplementary lorry based generator also required by Thornycraft or Tillings Stevens. The generator can be bought from here http://www.milicast.com/shop/product.php?productid=307&cat=18&page=1 More info. http://www.anti-aircraft.co.uk/ListerJP4generator.html but I've had no luck with the searchlight. This is what it looked like, if the scratchers wanna have a go http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/3dsmax-british-90cm-searchlight/666218 Richie. Glenderg
It's a cooling fan. The beam of light was created by electrical arcing through two chemical rods, so the heat would have been intense. Operators had a leash so they could stand a fair bit back from it and still operate it. I have an odd theory on time of the photo - 1966 for the anniversary of the rising. CIE were busy renaming stations and being bullish, so they may have been used for some promo doo-daaa.? Who knows! R.

minister_for_hardship
It does look like it's intended to project some symbol onto the clouds, perhaps to summon a "capped" crusader..? CIE Man, wearing a black woollen overcoat...resembling a cape.
