Afternoon all,

A few updates from the past week:

The December gallery has new images from Killarney and the Limerick area. Click https://bit.ly/380ymMy to view.

The 2nd update features images from Shannonbridge in Co. Offaly of the last day of Peat Trains operating into West Offaly Power Station which closed today at 1300. I believe there were four rakes out loading in the bogs on either side of the River Shannon with the last train reaching the power station shortly after 1515. Lough Ree Power Station near Lanesborough will close and go offline next Friday. An end of an Irish Industrial era with media reporting a loss of 1400 jobs as a result.

Some great pics. I have fond memories passing under that bridge on Shannon hire cruisers of summers past. A popular spot with anglers as the hot water running out of the power station just to the east of the bridge seemed to attract some of the larger coarse fish.

Yes sad to hear about the closures of these two once important power stations, but there seems some cause for optimism about new jobs perhaps on the boglands as they are converted into wind farms, forestry and carbon traps. End of an era but as a nation we have little choice due to the need for urgent climate action. Here's hoping for new employment in the midlands from green energy and forestry, etc. I see from the national grid dashboard that most of ROI's grid is now coming from wind and natural gas with coal generation almost eliminated (<5%). Changing times.

Nothing will come close to the employment level that both BnM and ESB had out there. A lot of the bogs will be flooded, not turned into windfarms or forests. I aws out there yesterday for the actual wind down (you could see the smoke changing and becoming weaker), there's pretty much nothing else out there. Went for a few hours without seeing anyone other than BnM drivers

Evening folks,

Lough Ree Power Station will close on Friday 18th December, following on from the closure of West Offaly Power Station the previous Friday. Commissioned in April 2004, replacing an older station the plant was the 3rd largest peat fired power station in the country. I ventured down to record some of the final peat train workings before the station closes and the distinctive peat trains disappear from the bogs.

Evening folks,

Two updates to the website this evening to bring 2020 to a close.

The December gallery finishes, and indeed 2020 with several images from around the Killarney area. Click https://bit.ly/3hxNvJn to view.

The second update is the annual 2020 Year in Review. It's a bit smaller than previous years thanks to COVID19, but the gallery still manages to contain over 200 images of some of the happenings on the Irish railways over 2020. Click https://bit.ly/2Mn6o6q to view.

May I take this opportunity to wish you a Happy New Year and thank you for viewing The Wanderer's Photos.

A late start to the January gallery due to the new national lockdown, which has meant travel has been non-existent.

So to start off the January gallery we have images from Nenagh Station on the final two days of the branch service before the service suspension takes place due to the introduction of the COVID19 emergency timetable.

* Later that evening in Limerick and Nenagh, pictures of the final northbound X12 working from Limerick to Dublin Airport at 1745.

Excellent photos, Neil, thanks!

Re. that box sitting on top of the old station in Cork - "The Dean"; rarely have I seen a piece of "architecture" so utterly hideous, that it actually vandalises the old buildings....... did the architect have something against Cork?

The Dean, closer to the tunnel entrance, is behind that office block sitting on top of the station. First time I saw a picture of it I thought the same as you. But seeing it in the flesh, it might grow on me. The jury is still out.

Hope this is OK here
Went for a test drive with my Free Travel card today, just into Connolly for a quick meeting and home
Saw this as I was returning for my DART, it brought a smile to my face, someone in there has a sense of humour.
There was a similar one on the DART but as usual my phone was in my arse pocket and could not get it out in time
