Can't see from the photos ( and maybe it doesn't work as well in 4mm as 7mm), but a trick I learned from Gordon Gravett's is to file a 'flat' on each tyre where it touches the ground. JasonB Posted January 4, 2019 Author Share Posted January 4, 2019 I've always fancied the idea of having a cement silo similar to the examples seen in both Tullamore and Waterford but could never seem to find a tube that was just right for the job. Then by chance I came across this... So this morning armed with the essential mug of tea in hand plus some photos to work off, I headed out to the bench to give it a go. I started by taking the measurements of each section of the silo, and then went about transferring these from the photos to the tube but in larger scale. Eventually, after a few alterations here and there I had something that I was happy with the look of. Markings now done I began cutting away the excess from the bottom of the tube to lower its overall height, and once this was removed it was on to cutting out the entrance/exit. Any rough edges were then give a light sanding just to tidy everything up. JasonB Posted January 25, 2019 Author Share Posted January 25, 2019 Managed to make a little more progress on the silo over the past week or so. First job to be tackled was sorting a base to form the roof area. For this I decided to use some foam packing. Simple enough process involved... The foam was cut to shape and the sides covered in pva glue. It was then pushed up through the tube, and once set I covered it in plasticard. What I was left with was a lightweight but solid base to build on. To help keep everything straight I've used an old platelayers hut which I will glue the four sides to. JasonB Posted August 31, 2019 Author Share Posted August 31, 2019 Evening all, Very little work to report on from the bench of late. I really must put that right over the coming months. Anyway, to try get the ball rolling again, I made a long overdue return to the silo during the week. And after a couple of hours work, it's now at the stage where it's ready for painting. I'm also considering mounting an LED just inside the entrance to replicate the dimly lit interior which I've noticed from various photos. To answer your question regarding the Ammonia and Barrier wagons. Unfortunately they haven't progressed any further since the last post, spare time for modelling has been hard to come by since the start of the year. They are currently sitting on the bench along with my IRM cement bubbles. That model has such a look of familiarity that it is uncanny. To say that it is a great piece of modelling doesn't give Jason enough credit for the effort, skill, patience, and commitment in building it.
