A real bargain

Or a really good laugh

Dropped into a certain shop on Capel Street this afternoon

Saw an Irish Class 33 & 3 Mk 1 coaches, 00 gauge, in a glass case

Being of a certain ilk I asked the proprietor perchance did he have a box to go with these items?

I am then brought to a shelf where I am presented with half a box with dubious content

All reference numbers are removed

Box lid indicates the items are HO

How much, says I

€400. says he, without a flinch

In my best English I try to explain to the retailer what the problems are with the set

Loco & Coaches are OO. Box says HO,

Irish set never came with a coach cleaning apparatus etc

He then went on to tell me that it was a Christmas issue in the mid eighties etc

I would say they could hear the door slamming in Heuston when I departed his euphonium

Ha ha wrenn, I meant to tell you about that set. I pop in regular for brass wire, styrene sheet, and model air paint (always in stock unlike some others). I asked him how much it was and he says 350 he'd take , but it's worth 400. So we shoot the breeze about and I buy a few bits. as I leave I tell him I'll stick it on IRM forum. "Oh" he says "it's 450 for the lot"

And

"It's in a box". He returns to his paper, I throw me head in the air.

Depends on a couple of things Anto

If they are boxed it will make a big difference

Looks to me like 2 sets

L105100X33 Starter set, Cl 33 "A" Mk 2 5228 & Mk 3 Restaurant 7115 which makes €250 - €300 because of the Restaurant coachs wrong number

L149801-2 mK 3 Set 7135 7141 & 7165 which makes €200

So maybe €500 on a good day.

My goat's nowhere near my tad, let alone 'up' it!?! I certainly appreciate the 'heads up', but It's a bit earlier than my interests - incidentally the same seller has a couple of Cravens up for sale too - I already have them, and it looks like they're on the way up in price.

Lima 201 River Boyne from another seller - The good, it's a livery not available currently from Murphy's - The bad, it's a Lima, the postage is a bit high outside Ireland? The photo is from an angle that shows (emphasises?) the Lima model's issues.

Not a bad start price considering the bonkers prices these things used to go for.

I'd buy one for 60-70 and kitbash the hell out of it, but what's the point? The MM '11 version is just too damn good! The MM '01 to my mind is good from a collectors perespective, but certainly not as a runner.

Exactly why I got rid of them, mainly the poor running.I know they can be

improved with a model torque motor, however as you said Des the newer 201

is such a cracker.

For those feeling frisky with the old razor saw there's this at 9.99ukp

http://www.kernowmodelrailcentre.com/product/12461/39230_Bachmann_Mk1_Brake_Corridor_Composite_Coach_BCK

Weshty reckons you could do this:

http://irishrailwaymodeller.com/showthread.php/831-Silverfox-exBR-Mk1-Steam-Heating-Van?p=18496&viewfull=1#post18496

and be well on the way to a steam heating van.

ps Fitted with the better B4 coils spring bogies - though if you are really particular a set of B5 bogies is available from Replica Railways.

pps I'm sorry I've no idea what Kernow are like to deal with to the South, but I've used them oodles of times within the UK.

That's a good bargain Rob. I have a BSK and two BCK's set aside for the future. Replica B5 bogies are really good and in most cases their B4's are better than other manufacturers. Des's cut and shut looks like it will be a winner. When I get some time at the weekend Rob I will pm you the photos I promised.

Rich,

Thanks Rich,

Those photos will be rather useful, because I may have taken advantage of Kernow's generous offer :D

Off now to see if I can dig up a similar offer on Mk1 BSKs... - Hatton's @ 14ukp is my best so far

Incidentally the same coach (the BCK) is at Hatton's for 12ukp, which may be cheaper for you if you're picking up anything else from Hatton's.

The option Weshty suggests is the way to go, I did the same a while back. The main issue is with fixing the roof back down as it clips into slots on the sides, I've just glued mine down but if you want access another method may be required. The gangways need to be replaced with Craven style ones also.

Sorry for going off topic :o

No need for apologies, it's relevant in that helps someone (me!) make an informed decision on purchasing the Bachmann BCK.

Moving on slightly, as promised, I went and dug up a deal for BSKs on Hatton's for 12ukp:

I'd tell you, but the I'd have to shoot you, all

That was useful, thanks for sharing....

This will however, be more useful especially for those that indulge in modelling US railroads, ModelJunction in the UK are having a "15% off everything in stock" sale over the Christmas break - until 3rd Jan I think.

http://www.modeljunction.info/

There may even be a certain amount of detailing parts for Irish GMs if you choose wisely.
