Hi Rich.

Thanks for the heads up re modelmaster. Is this the type product you refer to? https://modelmaster.uk/4mm-locomotive-lining-packs/17713-mm4000b-black-lining-05mm-wide.html If its a waterslide transfer and only 0.5mm thick, I don't see how one can possibly get it absolutely 100% dead straight, especially over a paint surface join between the white and blue paint. BTW, when I used the term 'dark art', I was of course referring to the use of a lining pen nib with wet paint, which from looking at many YouTubes seems a very specialised skill.

Check out lining:

(it should start 2h21m16s in to the very long video)

Cheers

Noel

PS: The guys in this training video are brilliant but its 3hrs long so recommend only watching the segments of interest.

Using decals like anything requires practice and patience. Breaking the decal up into smaller pieces rather than using it in one go will ensure a straight line once you master it. The term dark art gets thrown around a lot when describing some skills involved in this hobby and if you see using a lining pen as beyond your skill level then that's your problem unfortunately and there is nothing anyone can do for you as you have to want it to own it. The great drummer Carl Palmer once said that he could teach anyone who had never sat behind a drum kit to be capable of drumming on a record of a top recording artist in six months, all it takes is practice, honest effort, and desire. If you haven't any of those qualities than as I said you have a problem.

Agree totally with Rich. You can use areas like door recesses to break up the decal. But even on long uninterrupted straights like on a Craven the decal can be cut into 2 or 3 pieces and even then you'd find it hard to see the joins if applied correctly. It's like most things in modelling, plenty of patience needed.

Very good transfers also. I have seen plenty of people updating BR diesel models in 00 by adding modern yellow overhead wire warning flashes and thin orange cantrail decals. I have seen a class 37 with the cantrail decals applied around the cab also. It was a nice tidy job and looked as good as a rtr model.

  • 2 weeks later...

RPSI 3 Craven Coach set bought on board the 071 double header RPSI 'Munster Double' rail tour train today. These lovely models are a birthday present from my soul mate. Nice presentation box. The RPSI train right now has eight cravens + GSV hauled by 073 and 071. The noise is stirring when the two GMs hit notch 8.

Nice coaches Noel. Are Marks Models for selling these coaches?

As far as I know these are an RPSI product rather than through the Murphy Model channel. MM obviously assisted RPSI get them produced. Marks may be fulfilling a limited quantity on behalf of RPSI, but I saw somewhere payments had to be made to RPSI. Don't hang about they only made 250 sets.

Marks are selling them. Will be in stock on Wednesday I believe. Cash payment required, no cards.

I have already tried that route and was promptly informed that filling out the form, posting it along with payment to the RPSI Dublin address was the only option.

Same when I enquired last week. Fortunately I was on the RPSI train yesterday and managed to buy one onboard. Can't wait to run them on the layout behind a pair of 071s. :)

Was lucky enough to get a set when the tour arrived in Tralee, Very impressed with the presentation box and smart looking coaches, Very well done to all concerned with this project and hopefully more packs will arrive in the future.

Only 50 left according to post below on RMweb. They are selling fast. Perhaps I've been unlucky but all of the wheel sets on my set are out of alignment causing excessive wobble on all three coaches. Haven't experienced this with any MM cravens before (CIE or IE B&T liveries).

Had a look at them saturday on tour, and from what l was told ..170 pre sold 30 sold on train so theres 50 sets left for shop/net sales out of the 250 batch, not bad going at all, paddy M doing delivery saturday morning before talking up his seat for spin.

Very second hand information there, not to mention from RMweb where rumours are instantly taken as fact
