It is. It’s quite beyond hope now - a complete rebuild would be necessary.
Basically a new-build, so.

We don't often hear about the oul station at Clifden, but it has made national news....
Is that MGWR 6-wheel carriage still rotting there?

Can't remember how much I paid for mine, but the rewheel to 21mm gauge was cheap.

...One of the reasons the SLNC limped on as long as it did is that its PW was just good enough to work.…
In some of the SLNC photos, you can actually see the way the rail head undulates on each length due to long-term wear.

And he may not even have a valid licence....

James' videos are a really good explainer of what's possible. I follow the Templot forum discussion on "Plugtrack" and it is still very much "experimental" according to Martin Wynne (the man behind Templot) but it is possible to turn out (sorry!) functioning track that looks better than anything you can make using traditional methods I feel (except flat bottom rail on timber sleepers....it can only do Bullhead rail at present and that may stay that way in 4mm scale as the clips that would be needed to hold flat bottomed rail in place would be absolutely miniscule and extremely fragile (in 4mm scale anyway).
With current technology, you can forget about doing Pandrol.

I came across this chap's YouTube channel recently, and it's very informative for anybody interested in finescale modelling and scratchbuilding. He has a few videos in which he describes how to use Templot and 3D printing/laser cutting to produce bespoke trackwork, and this looks like a viable option for 21 mm track. I've never used Templot, but my understanding is that it includes 21 mm templates, so it should be straight forward to produce 21 mm track and points. Has anybody here tried this approach?
Templot will do pretty much any gauge you specify, within reason.
I've seen a Plugtrack sample in the flesh and, for what it is, it's very good since you can potentially print out endless stretches of P4-standard 5'3" with pointwork to match.
The only thing it doesn't do is have chairs that replicate the inward 1-in-20 tilt of the rail heads - the software isn't advanced enough to do this - so in this respect it's not that different to the old Hornby-Dublo and Triang-Hornby RTR track with strictly vertical rail (teamed with steamroller tyres and pizza cutter flanges)

...., mine also stripped the pinion gear within a few hours running. Rodrick did supply a new gear FOC for me to fit. I have washerd the lateral play to the absolute minimum keeping the worm in the centre of the pinion. Although with straight cut gears that should not be so much of a problem. The worm teeth on my loco are so sharp you could shave with it!
I wonder who the original maker / supplier of the gear set is. It's not unknown for the individual gears to be machined from unsuitable or incompatible stock, leading to premature wear or stripping within a comparatively short timespan.

....would it be a good idea in future for Murphy Models to collect any seconds unfit for sale, and strip them for parts for warranty jobs?
I'm sure people would buy the parts from Paddy, bodies, chassis, bogies, motors, PCB's, you name it....
I suspect the last thing Paddy wants is a room full of random spares sitting there potentially beyond his retirement age.

I always find it entertaining to look at photos of where airships were moored when they were relevant, trains weren’t the only things unfortunately phased out by planes.
I'm not sure airships needed any help being phased out after the Hindenburg thing.

What would be a fair asking price for both a UG Class and U Class by OO Works. I bought these a couple of years after production was exhausted but they were able to build me what they described as the last one ever to leave the assembly line. So much so, that the UG was not lined, numbered or transferred. Simple black finish. Both are boxed as new and never been on a layout for more than a few hours running and returned to their boxes...
If they are like hen's teeth, try a grand. Each.
Should see off the flippers/price gougers.

Clifden Station news
in News
Posted
I first saw the Clifden carriage in 1988. I remember it as being relatively complete, in a very faded grey/green shade.
I last saw it in 2001. By then, it had been partly wrapped in sheets to keep some of the elements out, but some of the exterior timbers were missing, exposing the interior.
Presumably a bit more of it has fallen off since then.
