  1. Leaving Aldi I heard the unmistakable noise of an 071 working hard.. Sure enough 072 on the UP IWT liner appeared over the crest of the hill en route to North Wall

    Empty 20ft Bruhn tanks

    IMG_5323.jpeg
Laden CMA CGM 45ft reefer, this one with flammable liquids(class 3)

    IMG_5324.jpeg

Unit 45 45ft reefer, another load of class 3

    IMG_5326.jpeg

Samskip 45ft reefer, this one is probably an empty

    IMG_5327.jpeg
Triton 45ft reefer, this one loaded with corrosives(class 8 )

    IMG_5328.jpeg

another unit 45, and two empty GCA tanks, these ones are refrigerated and the refridgeration units can be seen at the bottom

    IMG_5329.jpeg
Beacon leasing 40ft, probably on hire to CMA CGM..

    IMG_5330.jpeg
Laden GCa tank, non haz so probably carrying Juice

Laden GCA tank, corrosive so carrying bulk concentrate and two more empty Bruhn tanks

    IMG_5332.jpeg
Two empty bruhn tanks bring up the rear, under RID regs the loads on wagon 1 and 18 must be non haz, so a good place to load the empties!

    IMG_5333.jpeg

Two more reefers, one a TAL unit on long term hire to CMA and the other a former containerships unit

That co-op green looks very similar to the Consent green that used to flood the Irish container liners!

Wonder if the lettering can be removed with a cocktail stick?

I’m not sure what the best method to remove tampo printing is on plastic..

I think Bachmann did the consent boxes with their 13.6m tooling which is correct as they were too early for the LEG1

  3. WH Malcom 45ft HC in Argos and CO-OP liveries, €8 each.. Come with locking bars but no box

Oxford Diecast Stobart rail 45ft curtainsider, €8..

Hornby 20ft Tate & Lyle tank container, €9..

Will be packed securely for postage

looking for a 121  if anybody is selling one

must be in excellent boxed  working condition

    Thanks

    Stoby

I think Marks models in Greenogue have some in stock..

Theres also a seller on Facebook with a few at decent prices think she was looking for €165 each

  5. Got these pics of a tank from Cork container terminal(they were taken by the Cranes while offloading the vessel)

Thought it is a good example of how a container should look when weathered by nearly 20 years on the high seas and being lifted onto and off vessels, trucks and trains.. The frame is heavily worn, has very little paint left on it and plenty of streaky rust, the outer shell is patched various time and the walkways are far from square. Dapol take note!

    Fair enough price

Don’t see the saving though as you gave to pay postage also, and if you buy 1 you probably won’t get the box..

And if you wanted to move them on down the line they’ll be an incomplete set so worth less..

if they were €45-50 a coach maybe it would make sense..

Same chap also wanted €320 plus post for NIR blue 209 with a damaged front skirt

Daft prices. The re-runs due at the end of the year probably won't be much over €200 new.

Buyers need to realise these are due on Sale new from Marks Models and IRM by the end of this year for 1/3rd of that price.

Always the optimist but I can’t see new 071s in 2024 to be honest..

And if we do see them they definitely won’t be €200 considering the new 141s are more than that

It's going for how much now!?!? You could get a professional model maker to make any loco you want for that price....

@DJ Dangeroushas one that @murphaph resprayed for him, from the pics I saw it was impossible to tell if was a factory original or not, in fact @murphaphs one was probably better as it has subtle weathering instead of being OOB

    Mad price alright - shame I don't have a double of 112!

Mad where they’ve got to.. I spoke to Paddy a few months back on it and he said he just didn’t see the demand for NIR models so went with a half batch of 252 instead of the usual 504.. This is the result of them at I guess!

Inane politicains aside, Foynes reopening was pushed by the Foynes Port and the EU themselves. Navan can't start work until DART+West is complete and Athenry to Claremorris needs Limerick to Ennis capacity improvements to be started first. Ironically deverting freight flows to/from Ballina/Westport to Foynes strengthens the business case for Athenry to Claremorris along with the freight terminal proposed for Limerick Junction.

There's loads of moving parts to the network upgrades and a lot of projects to cooking away in the background that start the dominos for other projects to come on stream.

While what you say might make sense from a rail freight within Ireland point of view, it makes zero sense to a freight forwarder like me, where the rail journey is just a small part of the overall shipments transport..

Foynes is in the wrong place for services from Europe and has no large traffic generator near by to provide a base load to a container service.. It might work for some bulk traffic, but so could any port on the island, and if you are going to land in Foynes and forward by rail then there is probably a port nearby than is more convenient

Dublin port is currently just about at capacity. the plan from what I know is to massively expand foynes port and move a lot of shipping from there to foynes. there will more than lightly be a passenger service to adare for 2026.

Sounds like something that was heard from a driver in Heuston…

This idea that there is some over arching plan to move services to Foynes( the same pops up with Shannon) is nonsense.. Ports(or airports) and governments have very little say in what services they get, as the services are operated by privately owned companies that go where the demand is.. Hence the Dublin centric nature of our shipping and airline routes

    EXACTLY. Spot on.

By any standard, even the most optimistic, or the most staunchly pro-rail, could never justify spending money on a new (or essentially new) railway, just to redirect traffic from a perfectly adequate existing one, or to duplicate an existing facility.

My fears of white coloured elephants and inane politicians remain. One wonders if the Foynes money would have been better spent on Navan or Athenry to Claremorris.

I was slightly pessimistic as I overlooked the grain/animal feed to Gain Feeds Portlaoise which previous ran from Foynes, Waterford(RH hall now demolished) and Dublin(doesn't want rail freight or Bulk traffic in the basin very much).. However again this is not a dead cert for rail traffic..

I have said it a hundred times, doubling Portarlington to Athlone would be the best spend of money on rail in this country, benefitting Passenger services to Westport and Galway as well as all currently operating freight services.. It should happen before WRC, Navan or even East Cork, but it just doesn't have the flash to it to get some local politician to put him back into it! With the extra Westport and Galway services(plus more container trains in the pipeline), that piece of track about to get even more congested!

As asked originally by Patrick early on in this thread, and again by Mayner, are any viable freight flows identified for this line?

Much as I want this line to be successful, I'm struggling to find viable flows. Ore was the original one being mentioned, but with all that has happened with the price of zinc and Bolidon/Tara Mines this past couple or years I can't see that happening.

Is biomass a consideration? To Edenderry maybe? Like the Drax in the UK? Imported wood pellets from Canada.

The cement industry has been mentioned too, but what from where would need to go through Foynes Port?

And the renewables industry keeps getting mentioned. But what rail flows could this actively support?

Containers then... I don't believe there is enough import export to the US/South America to support this.

My own opinions. If anyone has other reasonable ideas, suggestions or information I'd love to hear your thoughts.

The Pallas green mine seems to be the main one mentioned, but the mine itself seems to have made little progress towards actually happening, just some surveying etc..

One flow that seems to be confirmed if the delivery of rail to Portlaoise, which currently arrives via Waterford.. but this is just re-directing an existing flow rather than being a new to rail flow..

Containers, Foynes is in the wrong place and Ringaskiddy seems to have captured the deep sea market, having weekly calls from the US(ICL lines) and South America(Maersk line banana boat)..

Other options were/are, exports of Baby food from Wyeth in Askeaton which is now closing and the movement of contamined soil from Roche(pronounce ROSH!) in Clarecastle which is currently being shipped from Foynes in 20ft containers on chartered vessels, however this project will likely be finished or nearly over by the time the Limerick/Foynes line is ready

Hopefully it's not "IWTanker" because the likelihood of mixing up the W and the T while typing are pretty high.

Good thing there’s two T is in there, just in case 1 falls off
