A whole crop of Dapol and Hornby containers released this month, some very much of Irish interest

Dapol First:

20ft Evergreens, unweathered and weathered versions available.. Cover a wide period from the 90s onwards, and were very prominent on the Claremorris liner with Bone chip exports from Dawn meats in Ballyhaunis, as well as lots of other liner operations up to the present day IWT

https://www.dapol.co.uk/shop/oo-gauge/wagons-OO-Gauge/oo-gauge-containers/4F-028-055-OO-Gauge-Container-20FT-EISU-75951-5-01151-3

40ft mixed pack with 1 Hapag Lloyd and 1 CMA.. Very relevant to IWT liners! Again come in weathered and un-weathered versions.. I got a set in a hattons order(with a nice Mulgrew truck needing light repairs) and they are passable.. Not up to Arrans standards, but a good volume filler as you can never have enough 40ft CMAs(think I have about 8, a mix of dapols and Crail by now)

45ft Mixed pack of P&O and Samskip, JACKPOT! Both of these are regulars on the IWT liner, and the Samskip ones sometimes make up 80% of the load on the XPOs(that's 3 boxes!🤪).. Can't find them on Dapol website but Hattons seem to have some..

Hornby have 3 packs

1 of tanktainers x 3, nice models.. Only the Concisa has seen the rails here(IWT liner 2015-2019ish), but the other two are generic enough/hire units that could fit in.. They are a little dear though, going to pass on these and pick up some C-Rails in Raheny instead!

https://uk.hornby.com/products/concisa-tip-hoyer-container-pack-3-x-20-tanktainers-era-11-r60130

1 pack with a 40ft hanjin and a 20ft DAL, Hanjin went bust around 2018 but their containers did appear on liners here(baby food liner from Askeaton notably).. DAL are a niche african carrier, so unlikely much Irish interest in this one.. Again going to pass as I have a Hanjin from Dapol, and they are dear for Hornbys standards at £21 a pack

https://uk.hornby.com/products/dal-hanjin-container-pack-1-x-20-and-1-x-40-containers-era-11-r60128

Another pack with a Genstar 40ft and a CCL 20ft, both more suitable for early 1990s-2000s.. I think Arran has done Genstar, and I know nothing about CCL! Another pass unfortunately!

Had a look on @Arran's website, and C-Rail also have some of the above, and some similar models.

There are several 9'6" highcubes instead of the traditional 8'6" height dryboxes which is unfortunate, but after seeeing the Dapol 40' ONE drybox and reefer, and their Mitsui 40' drybox, I'd check the photos very closely before buying Dapol again.

Their blue 45' P&O Ferrymasters boxes are nice, so hopefully the yellow ones will follow suit.

I have a whole curver box full of containers and tanks and normally pick up five or six more C-rails at the Raheny/Blackrock show! Although it's only a small box, and not all the containers I have now fit in it!

I only buy the Dapol ones because they are a bit cheaper, and give variety, so I have 7 different CMAs instead of 7 Crails.. It's a quicker option than buying Arrans and Renumbering! But when you put them side by side, Arrans are head and shoulders above anyone elses, so they are normally the top front box on my stacks!

Dapol or Hornby?

I think only Dapol do a weathered version, so they are the ones with the fuzzy printing I posted pictures of..

Each to their own, but I avoid the weathered versions from Dapol, I think the weathering is more like what you would see on rolling stock(track dirt).. Containers weather differently to rolling stock or trucks, as they are steel exposed to sea water regularly, rust is the main feature of weathering on a container, and also little diamond of black crud where haz labels were/have been removed.. @murphaph recent work is a good example of old/worn containers, but if a driver showed up in Ballina with one of those he'd be told where to go!

Agreed, @MOGUL, the Dapol ONE and Mitsui / MOL ones were terrible, your photos and comments were spot on.

Took some comparison shots myself just now, Dapol ONE drybox sitting atop a C-Rail ONE drybox, and a Dapol ONE reefer on top of a C-Rail ONE drybox.

Also the Mitsui / MOL 40' where the different layers of printing don't even line up.

The blue Dapol Ferrymasters have better printing, good enough for me, although still not as crisp as Arran's.

Have pre-ordered some yellow ones from Hattons based on the strength of the blue ones.

@Bob229 might do well to cancel that order with Marks if they're the Dapol ones, and order from @Arran instead.

I buy containers from CRail regularly and there is no issue with them being posted to Ireland - there is no hassle and I have not been hit by any extra custom charges since Brexit, top service from Arran.

Thanks

Hi Arran

It was not an issue with Crail, I was talking about the hassle getting some purchases from UK, items held by customs been sent back to the retailer, having to wait a week or more after paying vat etc before item is delivered, wrong amount of vat due etc.

I have bought containers from you before and they are excellent and will buy again from you

Regards Bob

Do you deduct VAT for posting to Ireland or are you IOSS registered like Hattons?

Thanks.

I got some Dapol 45ft containers the other day and they have separate locking bars but you have to

put them on yourself and it's fiddly cutting them from the sprue and super gluing them on, sometimes

gluing my fingers on too. :SORRY:

Is there a minimum number of containers that keeps customs at bay, as I have not bought anything from the UK since brexit , but have bought from Arran before and I have to say these are the best containers you can get, and I do have a lot of them and need some more.

Yes its unfortunate for Irish model builders who used to buy specialist bits and bobs from GB.  Hattons are set up for DDP (Delivery Duty Paid) as they are vat registered in Ireland, but that probably wouldn't make fiscal sense for smaller GB based retailers.  Hattons are the only UK supplier I've used since brexit due to DDP and competitive pricing.  Personally we now use amazon.de for household stuff rather than amazon.co.uk, and for model gear German retailers such as modelbahnshoplippe and keiskemper, etc, great for scenics and electronics.  Marks Models being local are good for over the counter, but their online web store seems sadly still stuck in the late 1990s (ie shopping basket not preserved between session, no favourites, no account management, no address book, poor searching and browsing, have to reenter every time you place an order. But I do like to physically call in and inspect some categories of stock, such as scenics, plastic elements, card, glues, paints, etc, which is not quite doable online. Retail is fast vanishing, but its good we still have one good retailer in ROI.

I got 2 Dapol 45ft containers the other day. P & O Ferrymasters yellow & Samskip.

These are Highcube and you need to attach the locking bars yourself.

I have 2 made by Bachmann so I have put them side by side for comparison.

The print on the Dapol ones are very poor.

The Bachmann ones are on the left.

I think all 4 are supposed to be hi cubes but clearly one (or both) manufacturer is way off in scale height at least. Could you measure them up maybe? Hi cubes should be 9' 6" right @Arran?

Pretty sure that "L" is 45' / 13,7m but "K" is slightly less, 13,6m, under ISO standards. "E" is a 9'6" tall box but "M" is only 9' tall. Also different widths. "E" is less than 2500mm and "M" is greater than 2500mm.

So the three LEG1's should be 45' x 9'6" but the KMG1 should only by 9' tall and a fraction shorter and wider, although probably immeasurable.

HI All

Bachmann ones were 13.6m X 8'9" high while Dapols are 45ft X 9'6" .

Geest at the time patented the angled front corners which let the container turn within the max on the roads

Regards Arran

I think BELL might have had some of the earliest 45ft container also.. Bachmann have been flogging their boxes for years as LEG1s for years, when you compare them to the Dapol tooling like that the difference is clear.. Same issue applies to their 20fts, I think they are 8ft 9 or so..

Tis a shame Dapols printing has gone to shit, as it used to be fairly sharp(ECS boxes they did are very good, will stick up pics tomorrow)and they are the only ones with European 45ft HCs tooled up

I received 3 books from @iarnrod in the post this morning.. Thanks Noel!

On page 40 of Philip Horton's Locomotives and Recollections I spotted this, quite a small photo so sorry about the orientation but was the best way to get a good quality shot with my phone..

Its a Transamerica spider tank like the one @Arran released a few years back https://shop.c-rail-intermodal.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&path=72_73&product_id=171 on hire to BELL lines, and with a BELL line logo(coincidentally Noels thumbnail!)

Nice easy container for someone to model with some home brew transfers for their BELL liner to add some variety

Anybody got their hands on the Dapol Cobelfret 45' containers, yet?

Be a while before mine get here...

Are they palletwide boxes?

Hard to tell from the images on Hattons, but they look like thay have that 2,5m wide yellow warning line.

They're LEG1's, so should be 13,7m / 45' long x 2,9m / 9'6" tall and less than 2500mm wide.

Palletwides are 2484mm to 2500mm wide, externally?

Or from 2460mm to 2484mm, externally?

Narrow boxes are 2438mm externally?

My understanding of the more common codes is...

First digit:

"L" is 13,7m / 45' long.

"4" is 12,2m / 40' long.

"2" is 6,1m / 20' long.

Second digit:

"E" or "5" is 2,9m / 9'6" tall.

"M" is 2,75m / 9' tall.

"2", "C" or "L" is 2,6m / 8,6 tall.

"E" is 2438mm to 2500mm / 8' to 8,2' wide.

"M" is greater than 2500mm wide.

Where are you when I need you, @MOGUL???

Here’s a few pics of the real deal for you.. I have three packs on pre-order but haven’t got hands on yet..

All their equipment is LEG1 these days or variants thereof, so 45ft PWHC, 9ft 6 high and 2.5m wide.. The dapol tooling is correct for this..

So are all of the Dapol 45' models 2,5 scale metres wide?

Somebody told me that 2500mm boxes were too wide for Irish railways, hence the use of narrow boxes up there. Is that true?

Given a Park Royal coach is 2895mm wide - No. Irish Loading Gauge is bigger than the UK

Great find. I picked up a couple of these recently, with the slim hope they might have been used here at some stage. Always nice to see something confirmed in print.
