Great Model Railway Challenge - Season 2

A bit naff with some daft animations such as land slides, volcanos, rocket launches, dinosaurs eating animals from passing trains, James Bond being flung from a train, etc. Episode one below, but the while series is on Youtube. Wonder if an Irish club will ever have a go in future series. Rivet counters will cringe.

Some may sneer but the thing to be remembered here is that it's not aimed at railway modellers; it's aimed at your average viewer wanting some evening entertainment. The fact it's been commissioned for a second season suggests it has been fulfilling this remit. It appears to have also triggered a wider curiosity in the hobby, with many shows in the UK reporting increased attendances since it first aired (this certainly appears to be the case at the shows we attend). And for a hobby that is generally fairly bad at promoting itself beyond its comfort zone, this is something that should be welcomed.

I don't like this stuff, it's TV- people & personalities for voyeurism- TV! But as Garfield says it promotes railway modelling and that is a good thing.....

Thought the first series was just about ok, until the final, which was way more about people than modelling. This series has little to do with model railways, just a lot of naff effects added to a train set.

Calling an Airfix model plane going by stuck to a stick was NOT 'great engineering'!

At the end of the day, it is Bake Off, with trains, though talking to Andrew Burnham, there has been a big upsurge in interest, so for no other reason the show has been a success.

Next step should be 'Celebrity Model Railway Challenge'(!). Rod Stewart v Pete Waterman v Jools Holland? Somehow doubt it, but am sure there are 'celebrities' out there who we've never heard of who would certainly play trains for a fee...
