  1. According to an IRRS Journal I have and the Ernie Shepherd book on the MGWR the coach liveries were in 1900 plain brown unlined similar to the Great Eastern Railway (which seems to have heavily influenced Atock) and of the blue & white livery for the new Mail set introduced by Cusack.

The plain mid brown with straw lining livery came after the blue & white Livery. There is a mistake in the Ernie Shepherd book drawings for the 6 wheeler stock saying the mid brown & straw lining was before the blue & white livery but the description on the chapter on coaching stock clearly states the livery from 1890 to the early 1900's was a plain brown unlined similar to the coaching stock of the Great Eastern railway and the mid brown straw lined livery came after the blue & white livery. The IRRS article on MGWR coaching stock says the same.

  2. I remember reading an IRRS article or it could have been New Irish Lines with a picture of a GSWR 1st class 3 wheeler painted in chocolate and cream. The article said two 1st 3 wheelers were painted in the livery for mainline use if I remeber correctly.

Jimmy Greaves may not be currently available for selection, but Martin Chivers could probably find the time to fill any gaps up front.

Neither would be fit to lace the boots of Graham Sharpe!!

  4. Interesting stuff, thanks for the info.

So is Dublin port going to be mainly LO/LO containers and Rosslare taking over the RO/RO container traffic now and is there going to be more LO/LO container traffic in Ireland's ports with Brexit putting pressure on the land bridge we had to Europe?

Are we going to see more container traffic from Rotterdam due to Brexit?

Good news on the railfreight front. I would be interested to know who is the customer from Tuam who uses the service and why it is more favourable than using the motorway from Dublin and the new M17 motorway since we are always told Ireland is too small to favour rail over motorways for freight traffic?

  6. Greenway groups seem to be on the extreme edges of Irish society  at the moment making a lot of noise for a minority group but Irish Rails numbers on the Limerick Galway route make for interesting  reading in this article, https://www.limerickpost.ie/2019/04/13/limerick-to-galway-railway-journeys-continue-to-grow/

It is on course to carry 420,000 passengers  this year making it Irish Rails fastest  growing route!!! Remember the constant  doom and gloom about what a failure this line would be , a white elephant  etc... With the rising need to reduce our carbon footprint and Galway's  chronic traffic problems despite the new motorway to Limerick,I would be confident  enough of Athenry to Claremorris being reopened!!

I often hear the population  density argument (it has been disproved for Limerick to Galway route) but with Tuam and connections to Wesport and Ballina there is plenty people for a viable railway!! The greenway lads & ladies would be much better putting their efforts into a full Galway to Clifden cycleway or Killorgin to Caherciveen or Tralee to Fenit than Athnery to Tuam!!

  7. Hey all ,

I have two Model Irish Railways Hunslet 101 class loco body kits (101 eagle/102 Falcon) for sale complete with all etches , paint , transfers , castings and name plates but no instructions or donor class 20 chassis!! I am only looking for what I paid for them which was €135 in total (not incl postage).

(I have window etch which is missing in the picture and I will post up a pic of the two complete sets of window etches when I get the chance!!)

  8. Hi all, anyone on here know where I could get info on any Sheds here if they existed ! or in the UK. Photos if possible, thanks in advance,

Here is a couple of pictures of the carriage shed at Achill courtesy of achill.gaa.ie. It is the old corrugated hayshed like structure behind the signal box.

  9. I have use this company ,http://i.materialise.com/ , who I find way better than shapeways in terms of support and tweaking model designs before they go to print . They also print in high detail resin or paintable resin and in my experience very little sanding is needed to get a great paint finish on the model. My 3d design skills only amount to using google sketchup and even with this I can get good results using the the printed models as scratch aids with very high detail when needed!!

  10. The whole FVR thing is a long drawn out mess.

You would expect this 'Down Mexico Way', but N.I. where there's heritage lottery money, proximity of RPSI and DCDR, more interest per head of population etc?...Not so much.

    Regards

Magpie (from somewhere "Down Mexico Way"!!)

  11. Off topic a bit, Mayner, but what's that small green birdcage-roofed van in your photo? Looks interesting.

It could be DCDR with G617 and E421!

I would say being a fan of the Midland like John is, it is a model of an 1874 class 8 ton MGWR goods brake van and a very good model of it too in my opinion.

  12. Thanks for all the suggestions, so pre 1955 the dark green similar to the Bachmann CIE coaches and post 1955 a lighter green?

Yeah pretty much got it one there Kirley although if you thinking of the dark pre 1955 green (which would look great with your Bachmann coaches) a lot the CIE Bredin Mk2's didn't seem to get the eau de nil lines above and below the windows like the Bachmann coaches (and the GSR Bredins). Most seem to either have a thin line along the waist like the park royals I posted earlier and a good few didn't even get an eau de nil waistband at all. They were just all over plain dark green. The BSGV in Downpatrick is painted in this earlier pre 1955 livery shown below ,

    https://www.flickr.com/photos/conorsteamtrains/15735317358/in/pool-transport-in-ireland

The coach behind the Steam Loco is in the pre 1955 dark green livery without any eau de nil lining in the link below

    Class D10 - 314 - G&SWR Class 309 4-4-0 - built 1903 by Neilson Reid & Co. - 1925 to GSR, 1930 rebuilt with Belpaire boiler, 1945 to CIE - withdrawn 1957 - seen here at Rosslare Strand in 1955.

I think the buffet cars were built in 1956 so they would be in the post 1955 Emerald green livery with the eau de nil waistband like the park royal in my earlier post. It would make a great train if you had one coach dark green livery with waistband , one in just dark green with no waistband , the buffet in the post 1955 light green and waist band along with the bachmann coaches!

One other point I should have mentioned is although the park royals I built had no flying snails along there sides, any pictures I have seen of the CIE Mk2 Bredin 3rd corridor and composites coaches had flying snails on the sides (passenger class identifying numbers on the door too) in eau de nil (Westy has done these transfer for me before) in the pre 1955 livery with the waistband and post 1955 Emerald green livery but not the pre 1955 plain dark green livery!!I don't think the buffet had flying snails on the sides though!

  13. Working on the interior of the coaches. I had to cut and place the compartments to fit the coaches, build toilets and partitions. The Buffet Car interior was built from plasticard and seating from old stock. John kindly provided an interior plan or else I would have been lost.

    IMG_1404.JPG

Then I painted the interiors with some non descript colours while the Etch Primer on the coaches was drying.

How WHICH shade of the 40 green's should I use???

I have tried loads of different shades of green and I have found for post 1955 CIE green Humbrol no.2 Emerald gloss green is the best I have come across. I have some pics below to show the results and how it can look different depending on the light in the picture. For the eau de nil stripe I use Humbrol no. 90 Beige Green Matt . For the dark Green 1946-1954 I have used Humbrol no. 3 Brunswick Green Gloss and Phoenix Precision Paints BR pre 1954 Loco green and Humbrol Beige Green Matt for the lining.

  15. HI Noel I have replaced wheels on these old coaches with new Hornby wheels which are much better quality and will run fine on peco points. Here is a link to where I buy them , http://www.ehattons.com/7285/Hornby_R8096_Metal_disc_wheels_on_axles_10_axles_/StockDetail.aspx .

5 types of mark 2 coaches have run in ireland at one time or another. These were Mk2A, Mk2B , Mk2C , Mk2D and NIR's Gatwick set.NIR were first off the mark with their new enterprise set in 1969 which I believe were Mk 2A's. Over the years that followed they bolstered their stock with second hand BR Mk 2b's and c's all of these including the Mk 2a's had windows like the yours in the pic above and some also had center doors like yours as well. In the 1990 Iarnrod Eireann swapped withdrawn C class locos for second hand Mk 2 a's/Mk2 B's like yours also which they refurbished and ran for about 13 years.

The Mk 2d's and NIR gatwick sets were AC coaches and had the fully sealed windows ( like the Mk3 coaches) with CIE introducing the MK 2d's new in 1972( the ran until 2008) and NIR bought the Gatwick coaches ( similar to BR Mk 2F) secondhand in or around 2000 and ran them until recently.

  16. Hi folks i have a silver fox a class kit at the painting stage. Would like to go green livery. Which green would be a good spray ?

    Hi Rich,

There two shades of green you need to consider when painting an A or C class namely a dark green and a light green. I have painted A and C class kits in the light shade but never the dark shade but I have painted CIE coaches in both shades which I have a pic to explain.

    CIE greens.jpg

In this picture I have used an Airbrush with Humbrol no. 2 Emerald Green Gloss for the Park Royal coach in the foreground of the picture which is the lighter shade of green livery used and in the center backroud of the pic there is a GSR Bredin Mail Van in early CIE dark green ( the dark shade also used on some A and C classes) for which I used Humbrol no. 3 Brunswick Green Gloss , agained applied with an airbrush. For the light green lining on both coaches I used Humbrol no 90 Beige Green Matt again airbrushed and there was a light green waistband on some of the green A and C's both light and dark green in this colour.

I know Humbrol do aerosol spray paints but I am not sure if the carry the above colours but I would encourage you to buy a basic airbrush and compressor set because it makes painting so much easier and enjoyable once you get over the initial fear of using an airbrush!!!!
