loads of us weather out railway rolling stock, and show what we have done, I cannot see a weathering vehicles so I’ll start one, anyone with weathered vehicles can feel free to pile in, show off their work, ask about how to etc.
People often say do ‘I hate VWs as I often weather them, I love them which is why I have so many.
A good reference picture is always a good place to start, these are UK plates, as I model UK. Oi who threw a brick…lol.
This is 1;43 a toy but had nice detail and would look nice on a O gauge layout
no box,but likely details ubderneath
as being weathered no need for a nice shiny finish in fact just the opposite and no smooth colour either
this belonged to my dad who had passed so cutting the door and ripping the headlight wasn’t on the cards, adding sun visors was though
scruffing the body work, the bumpers the tyres,
I like warhammer and their citadel paints which work for this project
messed the windows up on purpose
ashiny red layer paint works nicely here in my opinion.
00 is half the scale less detail, and needs finer work, but you need to be careful with the manufacturers these are both supposedly 00 but you cannot out them near each other in the layout!
I like plastic headlights not painted one,but sometimes beggars can’t be choosers, and you go with what you can get

Is there a thread for weathering vehicles?
If not can I pop some here.

I tried importing a great reference picture for you but it won’t import, check out old Phoenix wharf at wapping, I think you’ll like the reference picture, there used to be a number of pictures, now only a couple.
You have the crane, but the safety ropes, and drop down ledge may be of interest.

Phoenix wharf wrapping, I tried to import the pictures and they won’t load here, but there is a building there with all the old detail

The work in this post is not mine, I have permission from the modeller to show his work
the modeller for the items in this post
2 similar sizes of plastic tube one in the other, painted terracotta and presto water pipes
he said he used coffee stirrers
cotton wool and cloth bandaid strips and wire for the sheeps wool loads
the brown sacks were plastic black coal sacks he recoloured, you could. Are some from das press a fine cloth against them to get a material pattern,
fine dry grass, you can oven dry if your careful for the straw.
he modelled the sacks by the building from clay using a cocktail stick.
dark pipes similar to the terracotta just larger.
Fine chain can be gotten from people who sell scale model boats.

Hello Jaz & many thanks for your comments.
I agree the paper cobbles were not good which is why I did use DAS clay with a 3D printed roller to replace the cobbles, which I think look much better now.
The boat is from Model Slipways (who appear to have closed down) - a 1/72 scale Steam Drifter which I cut down to waterline model as part of dock scene.
Regards,
Ken
So you did, apologies I was looking earlier in the thread when I decided to make my comment, should have checked near the end before posting, doh! It does look much better. thanks for the info on the boat, seems I missed the boat lol, lovely model.
I just thought I took some pictures of loads suitable for this era, someone else’s work, and you can make some of them,I’ll dump those up in case your interested as well. If you then want them moved here for reference feel free,I won’t dump on someone else’s thread.- 1

I really like this layout, there is a lot to see, I love the boat, the steps to the water, the dock side buildings, the paper cobbles need stick down better, although you mif]get want to buy some plastercine roll it out then get a bic pen remove the ink and use the roundish bum as a fibber and imprint cobbles, if you like this getting some das clay and repeating and replacing the paper will likely be very pleasing, you can likely search this idea on you tube.
I love the boat, if you mentioned who made it earlier I’ll find it, if not can you say so makes it.
The colours, the back scene the buildings nicely set up, there is a very easy little upgrade to those buildings, I’ll dump a picture on my layout not litter yours, just a little bit of cotton, I think I still have the reference pictures as well, nice work.

I have some swans and ducks - cast metal - but I'm not sure of the origin.
There are seagulls available, too.
These aren't 'mine', they were unpainted, but they're much the same.https://www.modelscenerysupplies.co.uk/brands/preiser-models/ducks-geese-swans-oo-preiser
White metal likely Langley, put mine up on my layout as you goes pop in, so you can see what you think.

I like the figures, I do not like the bases they are on, I would careful cut them off, then either use tacky wax to pop them on the platform or stick on a flatter clear plastic or similar. This is coming together, everything fitting neatly into place, making best use of space, nice build.

Hornby shed
Bachmann coal bunker
The shed at least is a decent plonk and play, although I wanted an older greyed wood version.
the coal bunker had the goods modelled in resin, but seriously lacked any credibility in the colouring stakes.
the passable shed shown at its worst with the coal bunker both now screaming model
white paint greyed with black picked out the wood texture of the resin model, some yellow green to infer growth and as the shed aged, dirtier at the bottom, being a shed ground was not required and often not done so a little floating here would not be an issue. The roof greyed and similarly aged with another touch of yellow green.
I usually weather items right way up and try to imitate rain dirt, but I wanted some grime to emphasise the shape so after greying the concrete structure, I flipped it to add thinned black or thinned black brown along the edges to emphasis the shape,I did a dull brown for the metal lid inferring a rusty condition, and added some coal looking ballast, although in the past I have not been above scouring outside for a piece of coal and hammering down to scale.
A nearby tree had extra grass on the boughs to look more realistic, sone additional greenery was added to the ground to to give sone texture and more believable colouring
the lamppost is likely the least believable item here and I should in due course have a look at it, but for now there’s a fair upgrade, the area is also benefitting from natural sunlight which adds more realism.
the textures allow me to photograph closer, the wood texture, the smooth concrete, the brick wall, thr hinges and locks, the coal, the buildings across the way, even the tree all gel nicely together.
a Small insignificant part on the layout, but as each little area is improved it slowly improves the whole area as you pan past.

Disposal of building asbestos is frowned upon near water, I think dunking it in water is likely to cause health issues if the water is drawn into a water treatment, fines etc can be pretty prohibitive. amazed they got away with just pushing it into the water. The picture clearly shows at least two.

popped up on an image search, Changed it there.
Don’t worry I have made similar mistakes in the past, typos, misinformation from sources, the picture however is good reference even if the mistake had stood

Stairs, I wanted stairs I have some nice ones originally paid about 7 uk pounds when I searched they were going second hand for 27 uk pounds, at which point I looked at alternatives and wasn’t happy with the results,
the concrete look wasn’t hard to attain
and I was pretty please, stairs 7 uk pounds, versus 27 pounds or basically FREE. No contest
then at a show I saw theses a couple of quid, he was lucky I didn’t bite his hand off.

I am a Southern softie not too far from London, and a softie because in the cold the other half will go out barely dressed, madness to me, who wears gloves, scarf, and multi layers at even a hint of a drop in temperature, and unlike Charlie he is a mortal enemy Lancashire man, war of the roses and all that, and they have had a laugh about it, if you takes insults slung fast and rebutted as quick as a jokey conversation, my other half loves the thrust and flow, and will purposely keep an eye out for a lull before moving in for the ‘kill’ . Yorkshire men I believe also see themselves as hardy and to the point. We keep meaning to go visit, and perhaps holiday in the camping coaches, but to date have not had all the factors align to go,I have benefited from people who have holidayed there who have got me specific pictures I needed, the weir, the back walk, parts of Goathland village.
We also have other stations and diorama in the layout but Goathland being real is easier for people to compare. I must put up some pictures of Kalsborough. some to wet your appetite. it is a more modern electric area where the station is mostly diesel and the electric not yet in place so the odd diesel pulls an electric train through rather than miraculously trundle through lol, but plenty of old kit still in situ.
We fell in love with Goathland by accident, I bought the resin buildings THEN discovered they were Goathland, so sourced the set. Hornby at one time named the buildings they copied, then stopped it, I suspect people try to cash in was an issue.- 7

From 68 to 71, I lived within sight of the dust plume from this asbestos mine, although we were almost always upwind - https://www.amiandos.eu/en/
Amusingly(?), 'amphibole' essentially means 'double entendre' in Greek...
Registered UK deaths mentioning asbestos seem to have subsided very slightly in the last couple of years, but other events may be masking the reality to some extent, of course.
We have an outbuilding with 5 percent asbestos, we replaced the roof as it was starting to leak, left the walls as they were sound, the price for removing asbestos is scary nowadays, we don’t paint the walls as when the paint aged it would life the asbestos surface, we had to remove the roof ourselves as the new roof suppliers were not enamoured,we were careful to not smash and carefully pack, wear masks, wash hands, and if it had been blowy we may have dampened, but luckily weather was as good as it gets.
Surprisingly a straw roof filler in another outbuilding had asbestos in it again low level fairly inert,I luckily had the old paperwork passed on from the ex owner, he had had trouble selling the property the asbestos in the outbuildings likely made it harder for him to sell, but luckily cheaper for us to buy,the house is asbestos free.- 1
