Given how little freight and passengers are conveyed by Irish Rail I wonder if this would make any significant impact other then to tick some boxes

Not sure why they would bother, given this should already be in place by the Irish government. Have any fossil fuel powered generator station in Ireland been eliminated by green energy from, wind, tide/hydro dare I ask?

edenderry is now run on biomass but that biomass has to come from the other side of the world so its not so environmentally friendly as board na mona say it is.

As asked originally by Patrick early on in this thread, and again by Mayner, are any viable freight flows identified for this line?

Much as I want this line to be successful, I'm struggling to find viable flows. Ore was the original one being mentioned, but with all that has happened with the price of zinc and Bolidon/Tara Mines this past couple or years I can't see that happening.

Is biomass a consideration? To Edenderry maybe? Like the Drax in the UK? Imported wood pellets from Canada.

The cement industry has been mentioned too, but what from where would need to go through Foynes Port?

And the renewables industry keeps getting mentioned. But what rail flows could this actively support?

Containers then... I don't believe there is enough import export to the US/South America to support this.

My own opinions. If anyone has other reasonable ideas, suggestions or information I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Dublin port is currently just about at capacity. the plan from what I know is to massively expand foynes port and move a lot of shipping from there to foynes. there will more than lightly be a passenger service to adare for 2026.

And the real thing didn't have that enormous hand on it either........

perhaps we could bring 800 back if we had a hand like that to lift it over the too low bridges

  5. great to see 458 in working order. it is such a disgrace that government's north and south don't give enough to keeping fantastic places like the DCDR working

    keep up your fantastic work

Regarding the MGWR main line, putting a big bike track on top of it is a ridiculous notion, and that's exactly what happened. Rip it up - not that it will be. I passed through Athlone a few months ago; the railway (if you can call it that) is in a sorry state. Does anyone have any idea how well-used the "greenway" is? I took a photo looking towards Dublin. From memory the line had been lifted beyond the last level crossing in the Galway direction, but I didn't take a photo of that side. It would be a lot of work to reinstate Mullingar-Athlone. You'd have to reopen Athlone Midland, relay the entire line, bulldoze the bike track or fence off the cyclists. If the cyclists can stay, what do you do for passing loops? Divert them around Moate? Cyclists on a platform would only lead to trouble. If doubling the line, the cyclists have to go. I've no idea of the state of Mullingar: is the Galway side of the station still connected?

was passing through Athlone midland recently. seems like they are doing work to the roof on the engine shed. unfortunately the railway has been disconnected from the line. i cycled the greenway about a year ago. a few people use it but more would use a rail system. if you kept a greenway beside the railway people probably would not use the greenway anymore

I’ve also had a look on maps and it seems there is space for quad-tracking of the northern line out of Connolly, can someone clarify this..?

there is enough land though to quad track you would have to get rid of a lot of the vegetation which residents probably would not like

In the nature of this forum if members aren’t commenting on the topic (ie making replies) then the topic tends to drop off the list of recent posts, in addition if the topic is located in a group of topics (eg News, Irish Models etc) which includes a popular thread (such as the Hatton’s 6 wheel carriage thread) then it won’t appear on the home page either.

I know that you are all aware of this but the reason for my post is just to bring the appeal to the attention of members, I am sure that many of us on here would wish to make a generous contribution but may not even be aware of this appeal.

To this end if members could post an occasional reply it would help keep this topic to the fore and hopefully get the word out there.

it is also posable to rate the topic at the top right of the screen which might boost its awareness
