  1. Went to the Uckfield show yesterday from Dublin to see the Iain Rice layouts with a bonus to see Northport Quay and meet David with a fellow SDMRC member

Clever solution for a refreshment while operating a layout in the second photo

Thanks WE, I have a few 141’s that I have fitted sound to already, it was the 8 pin on box that threw me.

This speaker is too long for a Baby GM as you will have to shorten the PCB and if you are not confident in modifying/shortening the PCB then do not modify/shorten the PCB.

The ideal speaker is the Baby Boomer which requires a small amount of filing the chassis/inside the hood and soldering the purple cables to the PCB marked SPK +/- . Polarity is not important in the Baby GM .

The Murphy Models 121 sound decoder is ideal for the Baby GM.

Apologies, Eoin, for thread hijack, but John could you possibly suggest whether Alec's J72 conversion was ever documented?

    Cheers,

    Mark

The late Alec Phillips former member of the MRSI passed away in the 1980’s.

Back then Alec would you showed/explain to you on how to do the conversion but unfortunately it was never documented.

Alec’s pride & joy was his scratch built GNRi 4-4-0  accompanied him on his heavenly journey.

Im less confident we will see more baby GM since the tooling is gone and needs redoing from scratch, but you never know..............

Care to tell the forum where you got that information from “ the tooling is gone and needs redoing from scratch ” ?

I thought about fitting them to 141/181’s that may come my way this year. Is it possible to solder speaker wires to EMD Sound Decoder ?

Should you get a 141/181 in the future , I would suggest that you solder/hard wire the speaker cables to the PCB as shown in Flange Lubricator  link  / photo below.

Yes , you can solder speaker cables to your sound decoder.

I would not recommend to solder cables for speakers on the sound decoder as you will have to unsolder them in the future to fit the sound decoder in the A Class and also the sound decoder may get damaged aswell from the soldering which may also invalidate the warranty too.

It should be interesting to a 141/181 as it is 12 cylinder instead of the 8 cylinder sound .

I must try this on the next club night

I have a 0 gauge loco I bought as a kit in the 1980s at Telford. The maker was an Irish gentleman who cut the loco parts out of tinplate.

can anyone remember his name. He mostly did English locos but had this Irish 0-6-0 on his stand at an unresistable price.

Any idea what the prototype was?

It's hard to avoid buying items from the mainland, sometimes, it just has to be done. It's a bit of a nuisance but you should think about the value of what you're buying (are you happy with what you've bought) and not the price.

There is no customs/VAT charges from the Mainland of Europe 😉

  8. A “ Baby Boomer”  @ £10 speaker available from You Choos in the UK .

Sound decoder from Murphy Models 121 567 or 645 depending on which 141 or 181 loco .

You will have to trim inside the bonnet /chassis and chamfer the speaker top edges to fit inside the bonnet

I have installed this combination in over 30 Murphy Models 142/181’s to date .

Take your time installing and enjoy the sounds .

Is it the specific Lokpilot  for the A Class?

*No , there is no specific A Class Lokpilot non sound decoder available from IRM or elsewhere as they have already stated until 2022 .

*ESU have stated that there is a world wide shortage of non sound decoders and will not be available until 2022.

If not then the headlights probably just need to be mapped to a function key.

    *The headlights operate from F22 via Aux3 & Aux4 .
you will have to remap Aux3 & Aux4 as irishthump has suggested.
