Did you buy and fit a sound chip yourself or did you buy the loco “sound fitted”?

As I recall, as issued the Murphy Models 071/111 were DCC ready so you had to fit a suitable decoder for DCC or DCC Sound.  They were factory fitted with a speaker though.

If the chip fitted is definitely a sound decoder you could try checking the connections of the speaker.

Thanks Darius, I fitted the recommended decoder after purchase a number of years ago. Tbf I have not run the loco for about a year.

And that decoder is definitely a sound decoder and not a “non-sound” one?  In other words it made sounds when you ran it the first time after you fitted the decoder?

You could try a factory reset of the decoder by setting CV8 to 08.  It will then default to the factory settings and have loco address 3.
