That story's been doing the rounds for decades - Woodbrook was mentioned but I can't see where it would have gone. In other news the IRRS preserved the whistle!!

In 1919 the first transatlantic flight landed in Galway at Cliften it crash landed near the Marconi wireless station in a bog the Marconi company had a narrow gauge railway about 1and a half miles long to bring turf to the boilers at the station and had just got this state of the art railcar
This pic appears in an early edition of the IRRS Journal or it could have been Wally McGrath's "Some Industrial Rlys" book but all the others were very interesting. When I was a railway enthusiast.....well the Clifden line was my first love.... nearly persuaded my Granny to buy Ballynahinch Station back in the late 1970s.

This is a Consett Iron Company A Class Kitson built long boiler 0-6-0PT. There were a fair number in the class with one preserved. Here's a link to a couple at Derwenthaugh in later National Coal Board days. http://www.flickr.com/photos/irishswissernie/9089246539/in/set-72157627014288780
Thanks for the information and I'll pass it on to the party concerned.

Official GNR map dated 1876.
A rare survivor from the early years of railways in Ireland. Canvas backed. 13.5 inches x 10 inches. Map shows the railways before the line extended north of Tuam, no Clifden line and the Parsonstown & Portumna Bridge line is there too! Some wear to one corner but will be unnoticeable once framed. Will be sent by registered mail. Price of €50 includes registered mail. Hurry if interested as it's going on Adverts.ie later.

hi lads - it never ceases to amaze me , that no matter where you go on this planit of ours , irish railway hstory always hits you in the face! just came back with my family from 'the algarve'. first night was spent (as you do) looking for an irish pub.....landed 10 minutes from our apartments in a place called Potomio and found this little gem of a pub called 'Irelands Eye' worst thing we ever did - never left the fecking place for the week!!! the thing that hit me was the history on the wall ... then cane the coup de grace - an arrival / departure notice board from limerick station from the steam era!..you couldn't shift me after this!........
Oh dear, what a mess and to think that somebody obviously spent money on getting this made. Where is 'Lough Hee' between Claremorris and Galway - or is that how the translator in India/China or wherever spells Loughrea? And, where on earth is the New Castle listed on the board under Kilkee?

Thro' Rare West Kerry guidebook now gone too.
A new addition available for €20 including p+p on island of Ireland is a copy of "Rly Lines of Coras Iompair Eireann and NIR" by Hirsch & Doyle. In mint condition internally - except for the remains of a tiny price sticker inside the front cover and the name (!) of the bookshop in biro. Does not in any way detract from the book. Back cover has a couple of very slight dinges. Rare in any condition - especially at this price. SOLD!!
I also have nine issues of "Narrow Gauge News", the newsletter of the Narrow Gauge Rly Society, for sale. Issues date from 1986 -1997 and contain items of Irish interest. Offers please - can be dropped off for collection in Dublin - near Connolly Station.

Working Timetable on its way to Australia. That just leaves the 'See Ireland By Train" timetable.

Three interesting and scarce Tralee & Dingle titles looking for a good home.
1) The classic history of the T&D by Pat Whitehouse - hard to get in any condition and this one is in virtually unread condition with an intact dustwrapper.
2) The more recent and, almost as scarce, "The Dingle Train" by Walter McGrath, David Rowlands and Tom Francis - also in very good condition.
3) The ultra-rare 1987 reprint of the 1911 official T&D guidebook (36 pages + cover).
Pics below.
All offers will be entertained. Can be dropped off in central Dublin but otherwise will be by registered mail or collection.

Just pulled up from my Guinness impaired memory - the Marconi railcar was built by Lancia....I think.
