  1. They're the last ones (to date), Anto! :P

I think B103 may hold the distinction of being the first mainline diesel to be preserved...

From the ITG website "226 was purchased by the ITG on 23rd October 1992 for I£ 500 plus VAT. This locomotive had the distinction of being the first main line diesel locomotive to be preserved in Ireland"

    :) :)

  2. David Jenkinson of the NRM prepared a glowingly positive report as part of the feasibility study for Mullingar, and at the time described the opportunity as unique in these islands a large country junction station complete with mechanical signalling and other steam age infrastructure.

    Does a copy exist?

It is still theoretically possible....although remember the GSRPS......and how westrail ended

  3. It's not up to CIE/IE to preserve anything, but maybe offering 6111 to a (responsible) interested party or else put it out of its misery.

Well according to CIE's website some museum was going to be established to pass on skills etc.. I think they only changed it in the past few years!

And CIE has blocked some attempts to form a preserved line (on an abandoned line) down here.

  4. I think fair dues for going out of your way to build a model of such a distinctive irish type of rolling stock....

I would add to BosKonay's comment on glazing....personally paying out quite a big sum on an item of rolling stock that has printed windows...well I wouldn't! I would consider one if it had glazing etc.. but as long as the price did not go up

  5. The best way to look at it is if it wasn't for Cultra, Downpatrick, the RPSI, etc etc we wouldn't have any for our railway history at all to look at. The locos that are preserved as static displays or running would have all gone probably to the scrap mans torch along time ago.

Agreed all excellent in their own right

  6. agreed Anthony!!!!!!

Its just a pitty from history what with CIE planning their own museum at one stage....many national treasures such as 6111, 131, slncr railcar, mgwr 6w stock,121 loco, 015 and a host of others.....

I feel good that at least Downpatrick can restore what stock they have at some point, and they are safe! but poor 6111...

When passing inchicore depot you can see it dumped in the open air (it was stored at one point)

  7. I think the reality of it, is that the MOSI the NRM and the other museum wont close....because there would be an outcry in the UK, so a lot of it is sensationalised

rather an entrance fee will come into force, which I think is perfectly justified, as people would be willing to pay.

Come to think of it, im bemused as to why the national museum in Ireland has no charge for entry

  8. well at least there may be something happening.....if it were to be scrapped.......people will say why didn't they save it....do we really want that title?

Me thinks it would look good in the Downpatrick gallery ;)

There is an irish heavy haulage company GKT haulage which recently transported a 201 class from Connolly to inchicore and a 22000 unit to Glasgow!!

  9. It may be of interest that certain enquiries are being made from within the broad preservation movement with regard to 6111 right now. Now, don't get excited; funding, current manpower and hard practicalities will dictate whether anything comes of these enquiries or not. But at least somebody's trying.

Good news....all that is needed is to store it somewhere safe ;) ...not necessarily restoration, in the context of the transport of 6111 surely its small money in the context of IE's budget?

  10. You should have organised it all then - dont forget the funding and where to put the exhibits - given all 7 platforms are in regular usage.......

IE/RPSI did manage to display the presidential coach 5408 and 351 in heuston for a day

  11. I think the idea might have been to have something from a place where emigrants went to - there was a large Irish input into the Ffestiniog construction - and quite a bit of the slate output went to Ireland..

but that's not that historic in the grand scheme of things.....it was in London as it was built there 150 years ago and for the 150 anniversary of the underground metropolitan railway

but if 6111 is going to be scrapped what does that say about is and our heritage?

  12. How much did it cost to bring princess over from wales?

I think IE could stick to their own heritage.........like 6111 the last remaining example of the first generation mainline railcars in Ireland now lying awaiting possible scrapping at inchicore.

Imagine if lady edith could have come home instead....that would be a gathering.........but princess' connection to Ireland is lose at best!

  13. And yes, Bachmann in particular are streets ahead. My most recent purchases from them are the 85 and Blue Pullman. Excellent models. Tempted by the 4F. Hopefully it will have tender pickups.

Don't forget the LMS 2-4-2T tank loco and the stunning models of the former GWR dukedogs :)

  14. You are spot on they do have plug doors but they are different to ours. Even the windows in the doors are different. I'd run a mile too, if I saw the state the MK111's are in now.

    Rich,

:) its a pitty IE couldn't have kept them in an ok condition as it would have given the a bit more income.

  15. I think Chiltern railways run mark 3 trains push pull with class 67 locos on the London-Birmingham services,

I believe the mark 3's were refurbished and fitted with plug doors.

I think I read that Chiltern came over to look at the IE mark 3 coaches but turned them down as they were in such poor condition
