This year the South Dublin Model Model Railway Club is celebrating 50 years in existence.
From humble beginnings of a few like minded individuals coming together in a members workshop in Rathmines to where we are today in our purpose built club rooms in Knocklyon in Dublin.
Our Exhibition in Blackrock College this year will have added significance and we are planning on it being our biggest and best show yet.
Dates of our show: October 25th,26th & 27th.
Thank you
The Organising team.

Does anyone have a subscription Railway Modeller here in Ireland?
I have not yet recived the the June issue which was issued three weeks ago. Usually I get the magazine within two weeks of publucation date, this is the 2nd time now as I had the same problem with the April issue.
Will be contacting Peco later about this, but just wondering if anyone else is having problems.
There have been similar issues with other magazines arriving from the UK - for example Irish Traction Magazine - they were refused entry by Irish Customs - I have had issues too with other items being returned to a sender twice - same item , labeling on the package was fine it had its CN22 label - the first one had an an post sticker that simply said - return to sender, the second attempt had nothing but was returned - no idea whats going on - other packages are arriving no problem - it just could be a similar issue with your magazine.

Just to say a big "Thank you" to Paul and his willing team who put on a terrific show over the weekend.
It was great to meet a load of guys from this forum who not only made themselves known, but also emptied my Bagged Cement Van boxes.
I'm happy to report that the Ulysses delivered Richard and I safely to a rainy Holyhead and that Richard single-handed drove us to Reading - dreadful weather throughout - so wet that we couldn't have exchanged seats without getting drowned. Record early arrival - 6am and straight to bed until midday! Richard has just reported in that he's safely home to Ipswich after much detouring due to roadworks etc. As usual, we are both whacked, but happy that we made the trip.
Thanks again, SDMRC, and all who bought my wagons.
Leslie,
You are very welcome, weekend went well and very positive comments have been received - a big thank you to our sponsors - Irish Railway Models , to all the trade and exhibitors and the general public for attending - all the traders were happy with the weekend which is good to hear.
To Last Lap Cafe for feeding the public - this went down a storm. , as we were not able to provide refreshments to the public in previous years.
I have made my list of improvements for the next show in 2025.
Thank you to everyone who have supported our show over the years.

yes - the add was filmed at our clubhouse (South Dublin Model Railways) over two days - you were not dreaming - for the short glimpse at the start of the add there was a huge entourage involved in the production.
The production company wanted to make it as generic as possible.

The 'Please do not Bend' envelopes he uses have not been subject to Customs charges for me anyway and he does have the customs sticker on them.

Awesome my order arrived today, so did they ever run with the blue 46% urea bags? They would have I assume heavy used early spring when farmers were spreading for silage. Also they were a larger bag than the standard ones. I think there was a yellow bag also, I could be wrong on that one.
Yes they did but the pallets were always shrunk wrapped with white plastic sheet with the Orange and blue NET logo.

Totally agree Nick, great to see everything in person what is available, but I'm heading to Cultra (Belfast) for the model railway day in two weeks and also to Birmingham for the Warley show in four weeks time, I had booked these early this year so have to restrict expenditure, so maybe next year. TDR
Morning Raymond, Kildare Station will be at Cultra so see you then

Nowedays, they have a forklift that can detach from the rear of the truck for unloading and even then, most farmers have a machine that is capable of lifting each pallet off one at a time
this was back in the day when mechanization was not top of the agenda, there was plenty of labourer's on farms back then and Health and Safety were not as stringent as it is today so lots of this type of work was done by hand.

Was fertilizer traffic seasonal?
For beet growers it was, fertilizer would be delivered to local stations for farmers to collect and spread on beet ground in the spring, at home we collected our fertilizer from the station in Tullamore. This then changed in later years 70's and 80's to being delivered directly to the farm by truck and unloaded bag by bag off the truck I might add!

Watching videos of the Inchicore open day... Was that your Grand Hibernian that made a cameo on the layout?
Thanks Warb,
Yep that was my Grand Hibernian - unfortunately Kildare is not long enough to run the full train, had the remaining two coaches in the box on the day.

Warb,
You just need to put the shed on wheels now and then you can travel the world with this masterpiece, bet your glad to see the idea finally come to realization , from a recent trip on the dart there are a lot more barges now docked in Grand Canal but I remember your scene well commuting to /from work. You just need a bit of white bird poo on the remnants of the boat you have in your scene or a few gulls sitting on the sides.

Never checked until today actually!
The coupling mount on the wagons are designed around the Bachmann 36-030 straight narrow coupling.
As Tom (Ironroad) indicated the 18, 19 or 20 should work. The No17 is too short!
Hi John
for what its worth Kadee no.s 19 & 20 are the longest Kadees that I have come across and offer the greatest clearance on tighter curves.
Thanks

The problem seems to have been a shortage of connecting flights from Asia/Middle East to Ireland, we had similar problems with shipments during the Alpha stage of the pandemic.
An Post have processed and cleared the shipment through Irish Customs, though they are still show up as "In Transit with Airline" on the NZ Post tracking system.
Thanks for the update John

Did any of you guys order it from Amazon and have it delivered from Amazon UK to the EU duty paid? Amazon UK tells me it has been shipped and assure me that taxes are all paid etc. but, well, you know...
Hi Phil
Yeah I bought mine from Amazon UK but it was shipped directly from the printers in Belfast so no duty was paid.
Thanks

I was always fascinated by port and dock railways and needed a OO gauge test track and backdrop for my models, so I looked at the John Allen's Timesaver switching puzzle for a small self contained layout.
The Timesaver was basically a model railway board game where the operator shunts/switches 5 freight cars between set starting and final positions in the shortest time possible. Originally intended as a brainteaser for operators on John Allen's famous Gorre & Daphetid Railroad, the original Timesaver layout was on a plain baseboard with no scenery or stopbolcks to stop stock running off the ends of spur tracks.
I first worked out the minimum space require by setting up a Timesaver track layout with the original design constraints based on Irish 4w wagons & a B121 locomotive.
Timesaver mock up with B125 and 5 wagons. Min length 1600mm.
The main Timesaver constraints are that the spur tracks are each capable of holding 3 vehicles (loco or wagons), the run round loop and release tracks a maximum of 2 vehicles.
Track is Peco Code 100 with small radius Insulfrog points which I had in stock.
In practice the length of the release tracks limit the majority of moves to a loco and 1 wagon, though its possible to shunt two wagons when pushing and pulling.
I extended the scenic section to 1850mm as I had a suitable piece of ply with a 500mm fiddle yard section to fit a 2350 shelf in the home office which would allow more realistic operation
1850mm extended Timesaver Mock Up.
The extra 250mm allowed me to extend the run-round loop to hold 5 wagons and extend the release and spur tracks at one end to hold an additional wagon. The increased length & fiddle yard allows more purposeful shunting that possible with the original Timesaver concept. A train can be made up off scene and arriving/department traffic modelled rather than just shuffling wagons back and forth.
The corrugated buildings are a mock up for 1930s era grain silos/feedmill, the large red brick buildings are based on the Canal era maltings on the North West side of Grand Canal Dock.
B132 arrives with two empty opens, a covered wagon and a brake.
B132 has propelled her train out of the year before uncoupling the opens from the remainder of the train before running forward to pick up the 'full" wagon from under the hopper and position to two empties.
B125 has run round her train and positions the brake on the loop so the guard can complete his paperwork in comfort while the (human) shunters make up the outgoing train.
B125 has picked up the outgoing Ranks Wagons and Open to add to the outgoing train before shunting the incoming Covered Wagon into position at the mill.
Ready to depart B132 has collected the outgoing traffic, the crew have retired to the office building for lunch before departure.
Apart from the track most of the layout will be built from material in stock, the baseboard will be all ply construction with track on dense foam underlay. Point motors are Peco likely to be controlled using Lenz stationary decoders last used on an N gauge layout, control Digitrax Empire Builder system with Duplex Radio remote control. Buildings and structures are mainly salvaged from earlier projects mainly built using Will Scenic Sheets.
Scenically the layout is a section of rail served quay or basin with backround buildings and structures.
I will probably do a couple of mockups of the Feedmill Grian silo, possibly 1930s concrete construction or corrugated iron, the hopper arrangement for loading wagons is similar to that used at Waterford North Wharf
The next job is to cut the profile of the quayside out of the baseboard top and assemble the baseboard, the baseboard framing will be formed from 80mm rips of ply with the quayside area reduced to 50mm to give a shallow quayside basin effect.
Looks excellent John.
