    Question for those in the know: Did the weed spray van have a generator on board to power the pump, agitators and run the CCTV cameras? Also any form of heating?

    Noel, yes there is a generator in the weedspray van. Whether or not it is the same one as was in it originally, I'm not sure. Not sure either about heating. Hope this helps.

    Has a C class ever been observed/documented hauling Mk2 a/c stock, even a transfer move of stock?

    At the start of 1972 there were 20 C class locomotives still, to some degree, operational. So, while some of these might have been used to shunt members of the Mk IId fleet around Inchicore works, it is most unlikely that any C class hauled these carriages out on the main line. By the time the Mk IId fleet were introduced into traffic, in December 1972, all the C class had been re-engined. The B201 class were, on the other hand, used on service trains composed of Mk IId stock one a regular basis. The attached photo by Barry Carse appeared in the February 2020 edition of the IRRS Journal (V29, No. 201) and shows B231 working the 13:30 Dublin Heuston to Cork train (7 x Mk IId) through Knocklong on 21 April 1973.1432351908_B231atKnocklong.jpg.b6d792929f2f04c4c437e8fdeab27172.jpg

    Phoenix converted to a diesel after purchase by the CDR after the CVR closed in 1942.

    The Atkinson-Walker steam tractor (un-numbered in its Clogher Valley days) did not survive on the CVR until that line's closure in1942. It was bought by Henry Forbes for the County Donegal Railways Joint Committee in 1931 and was sent to Dundalk for rebuilding in February 1932. The locomotive was ready for trials on the Donegal's lines at the end of December 1932. Although the locomotive, numbered No. 11 and given the name 'Phoenix' by the CDRJC, did not prove to be an unqualified success, it was useful as a shunter and accumulated over 204,000 miles in service up to the end of railway operations on the CDRJC.

    What the CDRJC bought in 1942 were  railcar No. 1 (later CDRJC No. 10) and a diesel tractor No. 2, the latter without its engine. The tractor consisted of a cab, which was similar to that on the railcar, and behind this an open wagon body. Unlike the railcar, the tractor was not articulated. The cab of the tractor was used to replace that of the railcar after the latter was damaged in a collision at Strabane.

    I take it that laden fertiliser wagons reached all parts of the network.  Were the return trips empty wagons or were they used for transporting other goods on part of the journey?

    8118, they were empty on the return journey.

    1.  The “Flying Snail” (as in my avatar thingy) was used by the Dublin United Tramways Co on their trams and buses from 1941. They had the company name in Irish across the central bar. In 1945 the DUTC was amalgamated with the Grand Canal Co., and the Great Southern Railways to form CIE, and the entire organisation used it, without any wording across the middle.

    Slight correction on the timeline above JHB:

    1 Jan 1945 - the DUTC and the GSR amalgamated to form CIE which was then still a private company, although it was in receipt of state-aid;

    1 June 1950 - CIE and the Grand Canal amalgamated the new entity retaining the name CIE. CIE became a nationalised company at this time.

  10. Nelson, you will have to make your way to the bus stop on O'Connell Bridge (southbound side). Then take a route 4, 7 or 7A bus to Blackrock College. The stop is almost directly across the road from the main entrance to the college and from there it is a short walk to the exhibition venue. For your return to the city centre, walk to the college's main entrance, turn left and walk along the main road for a short distance until you reach the bus stop. Again, take a 4, 7 or 7A to O'Connell Street and make your way to Connolly.

    I've developed a bit of a soft spot for the little 26's in Cork - the only trains left in which you can open the windows and get fresh air, thus the only trains in Ireland that aren't fixed at sweat-boiling temperatures inside! And the noise of them going up the tunnel.....

    I liked the 27s for that reason too.

    And, of course the 8100 / 8300 DARTs.
