  1. Been quiet recently, however i have been busy making a burst at my cars with the good weather.

As with many of us, I was struggling for space to craft a layout, but I've been lucky enough to be given full run over a garage at home with a decent sized space for a layout. Ideally I would love to use the full garage but with 3 restorations underway, I do need to leave space to work on my cars as well as a little bit of communal storage.

The area I've designated for the trains is approximately 23 × 9.5 foot, giving loads of space for scenics and a fiddle yard. I will likely stud this section off and put a membrane in to ward off the inevitable dust from doing car bodywork and paint as well as a door.

The layout is still very early on in the planning stage, but I want to have

    DCC

Round the wall layout with lift out section

Double main track all around the layout, with 4th radius minimum curves, and long points.

A station capable of taking a double 141 headed 7/8 coach train with goods facilities including container traffic, fert, beets and gypsum traffic.

Plenty of scenics, including rural and a small town section.

    8 Lane through fiddle yard

    Thanks all!

@meathdane - Nice collection of locomotives, love the weathering on the 141s, you should certainly get you hands on the A30 - the silver livery is so under-rated. And as for Wrenneire - where would some of us be without him? Have purchased a few rarities off him in the past.

Thanks but I can't take credit on them! They came to me preweathered! Not been brave enough to weather them!

And I have 5 A classes, I've done my bit to help sell them out! 😂

I love the weathering in this loco, as I do the smoke. They compliment each other very well.

accodning to the manufacture the speaker and decoder was moved to the rear area behind the grill and the smoke machine was put where the decoder once was (smart idea might I add)

He's done a top class job! I'm very impressed!

I can't imagine it being cheap, but absolutely worth every penny!

    Dane,

You need a copy of "Across the lines" compiled by Charles Friel where a lot of Dundalk men talk of their railway experiences - a lot of them worked in Barrack Street Goods.

Good luck with the project - I see a few more kit sales to you ......

You are correct about kit sales Leslie, but I believe you may have used the wrong 'D' name in thise case 😂

For those who only have a few ferts, or only want a few, don't be put off by a "need" to buy a dozen! You could see them in smaller numbers as part of a mixed goods train along with cement and Guinness, as often the case on the North Wall - Dundalk - Belfast (Adelaide), and Dundalk - Derry goods back in the day. There were times when that train might only have 3 or 4 fertiliser wagons, with a few 4-wheeled Guinness flats in two. So if you've just one pack of bubbles and one of ferts, thats fine for a goods train within the realms of accuracy!

Or just rule 1 it and have your flying snail hornby 0-4-0 pulling one around at a scale 200mph!

Too good an opportunity to miss these! You'll only kick yourself 😉

Fabulous. Very atmospheric indeed. I really like it, shades of Dugort Harbour about it. I'm no expert on backsecenes, having never made one but would a blast of matt varnish be an idea to reduce the light reflecting back from the lanterns?

Very kind of you to say, especially comparing it to the wonderful Dugort Harbour!

An overhead lighting rig, with a wash of light over the backscene, would also mitigate this.

Yeah, I'm looking into possibilities of dulling the light reflection. My first attempt at a backscene, and truthfully I'm not overly happy with it plenty of bubbles and ripples in it, so I may come back to redo it at some stage or even paint a backscene instead!

    Thanks for the comments lads

Terrific work. You should be well pleased with what you’ve achieved so far!

Progressing nicely. The dreaded light bleed is a scourge for us all, but can always be fixed with a bit of work. Great modelling.

Thanks lads! Much appreciated! Hopefully more to come soon!

An idea I have been toying with is taking a flat green screen and setting it up as a backscene for photographic shots. I might still do it as a "frontscene" that i can lift in and out of place as i please.

the reason i mention it here is that your low down POV shots are really good and would make great use of such a feature if set up as you would be able to add whatever backdrop you liked after a photo was taken instead of say your kitchen for example.  not sure if anybody has actually ever done that though.

It's a great idea, it wouldnt be too hard to do, some editing software and some sheets of green paper glued to a piece of board/green sheet stapled to one, it wouldn't be too hard to achieve! And the advantage here is the backscene is attached to a separate board, so swapping out would be easy done

If I was sensible I'd take it outside, but I prefer working at night, so I'll have to wait to get it lit up.

I'm sure everyone here is sick of seeing my kitchen!

  9. It's amazing the difference a backscene will make! Getting onto decorating the station and lighting next!

As well as gearing up to transition fully to true Irish rolling stock!
