Found this on youtube, has the jumbos on the back of a liner.. Can't make it out but the first tar wagon has something written in the bottom left corner. It nearly look like the BRT logo from the UK, anyone know what it says??

Could it be a hand written number like at the end of this video?

  2. dont forget the steamers.......

a jinty supertrain! excuse the paintjob, the masking was done using household tape ...having none of the good stuff - you have to improvise!!

What do you normally use for the good stuff?

  3. Some very nice photos there.

Indeed Brian is an absolute gent, and very knowledgeable on both railways and photography. His book (one of many) Railway photography would be a great resource for anybody wanting to get to take great pictures. While it covers the basics of photography, it does so with from a what is good for taking pictures of trains angle. Full of lovely pictures too. :)

Alternative is to use cling film layered 8 times with a skin of pva every two sheets. Form the tarp by pushing the wagon into it, and creasing the film along the sides. Then you can mark the film, cut off the excess, and fold the four outer creases to form a whole tarpaulin. It will take a while to dry, but laminated cling film is surprisingly rigid and holds folds & creases well. It likes sticking to plastic too.Richie.

Great, thanks. Now all I have to do is build the rest of it

  5. Are those trains hauling tare mines or beat bit confused as the video is on the Wexford line. Did the tara's travel that far south?

As far as I know during the early 90s there was a short lived experiment to so if they could send the ore out cheaper by port from Arklow rather than Dublin.

  6. Since we're on topic of Sperry unit, can anyone confirm that it's identical both sides? Would make a nice little scratchbuild project...

They are not the same, one side has one door and some grills the other side has two doors no grills.

  7. I was look at this vid and thought they would make a nice model. The base is a standard 20ft flat wagon. The sides dont look too complicated to make from plasticard. Has any body got any idea for the tarpaulin.

    FESTIVAL EXPRESS

The Festival Express was operating on 19th August, from Dublin to Kilkenny.

Over 300 passengers boarded at Dublin Connolly. A punctual departure was achieved, and the journey was routine until beyond Inchicore when speed fell away, and it looked like there was a problem.

This proved to be all too correct and an extended stop was required at Adamstown to raise steam. The problem was not resolved, and a further extended stop was required at Sallins loop where fire cleaning was undertaken and clinker removed. The booked water stop was taken at Kildare, but departure from there was almost two hours late (also due to poor water pressure).

Further problems arose on the approach to Kilkenny. GM 082 was on hand anyway at Kilkenny to shunt the carriages and it was decided to use it to pilot No.461 back to Dublin, and the planned turning move on the triangle at Lavistown was abandoned. In view of the very late arrival at Kilkenny a later departure time was agreed and at 17:15 a diesel loco (GM 082), with No.461 and train, departed for Dublin.

However, during a stop at Newbridge No.461 was found to have developed excessive heat in a bearing, and there was no option but to remove her from the train. The locomotive was placed in the bay platform and the train proceeded to Dublin without further incident. Eventual arrival was after 20:00.

A big apology is due to our passengers who tolerated long delays, and a much too brief visit to Kilkenny. Their understanding and tolerance of the difficulties was greatly appreciated, and it is to be hoped that they will not be put off travelling in happier circumstances with us in the future.

No.461 is to be examined as soon as possible and a course of action decided upon.
