  1. Thanks Eamonn. It sounds like the speaker housing was split into two which was the technique recommended by MSB to get some bass (i.e. speaker retained in half the case), OR did the full 20x40mm speaker housing fit in your 141? I might try and cut the lugs of one of my 141s so see if the full bass reflex speaker housing makes much of a difference compared to a standard 20x40mm speaker in the MM cradle. Noel

PS: I am awaiting another updated 141/181 Zimo from Keith with the version 3 tweaks.

The full Bass Reflex speaker is worth adding for depth of sound for 141/071 and 201. However, particularly with the 141, a fair amount of the lead weight has to be filed down (take care as this substance is toxic). It is a bit easier with the 071 but in both cases the speaker will intrude into the cab area. Adding a driver figure can mask this but the cab light in the 071 will not be visible with the larger speaker intruding.

Plenty of other pictures on there in this livery.

Posted elsewhere a couple of photies of 121 in original liveries on Ballybeg...

  3. The stencilled version of the snail was the norm after, I'd say, the mid 50s, but was only seen in this "non-filled-in" form on wagons.

By the late sixties, while most wagons wore CIE "roundels", almost all remaining with snails - and there were lots - almost all had the stencilled snail.

That's a fantastic looking 121, Railwayman, first time I've seen a model in light grey. I'm not 100% sure on black lining on the "snail", though, will have a delve and see what I can find.

Thank you - this is a handpainted kit provided by the now defunct Model Irish Railways in resin form. The transfer vinyls provided with the kit included yellow numerals and flying snails lined in black. Here are a few other photos of 121 taken on my layout Ballybeg by Enniscorthyman.

  4. Is it just my imagination or do MM 141/181 have the smoothest and quietest running chassis used on MM diesels, with the best crawl speed performance?

I've now had a lot of time to run 141/181, 071 and 201 class Murphy model locos. All superb models and excellent runners, but the little 141/181 do seem to have a significantly better quality chassis with smoother quieter running, and unbelievable crawl performance, including over insulfrog points. They just never stall. I've experimented with DC, and DCC using a variety of decoders from Lenz, Bachmann, ESU and Zimo. Am I correct in the assumption that 141/181s have Bachmann chassis but 071 and 201 chassis are made by another manufacturer/sub-contractor for MM?

It may also be the case that Bo-Bo (4X4) bogies are inherently more suited to model running compared to Co-Cos (6X6) in OO?

  5. The Carlow Station building is a good example of the many fine architectural artefacts on Irish railways. Alphagraphix do a range of card kits of other stations/other Irish railway buildings but the resin models are very good. I have a number of station models that I can alternate on my model railway "Ballybeg" at home or at exhibitions. I have purchased a Carlow model for adaptation into "Ballybeg" livery!

  6. It would be such a shame to pull apart a 141, they are such a nice loco. I wouldn't be able to bring myself to it:((

Are the 141 chassis available separately from MM now?

  7. Nice job, any photos of that N class? I have four that I will want to add at least a chip or sound and some lighting to eventually

Anyone managed a firebox in an N?

I'll put together a video with Eamonn once Ballybeg is reassembled (in the garage at present while the railway room is repainted!).

  8. Hi anyone on her ever tried to convert an N Class into DCC, thanks in advance,

I have fitted DCC Loksound soundchips to two of Murphy Models N Class locos. There is room in the coal tender to fit an 8-pin socket, sound chip and a Bass Reflex speaker (facing down to the track). I even managed two LED oil lamps on front which work regardless of direction of travel! I used the sound project from Southwest Digital which is quite impressive with a coasting feature. A third MM N Class I fitted with a non-sound chip. No room unfortunately for smoke units but these can be difficult to get to work properly.

  9. Does anybody have a video clip of an A class model with sound? I'm very pleased with the updated 141 class sound chip from MrSoundguy.

I have a sense that to compliment DCC sound from locos, it might be interesting to also have a permanent background noise track running from layout speakers powered by mp3 or laptop. This could have a mix of station noises, distant trains, passing trains Red shift effect, rail clinks, steam whistles, traffic noise, background platform/people sounds. I vaguely remember Noel Edmunds did a cassette sound track for hornby about 20-30 years ago with a similar assorted sound mix. With mp3 even better results could be played. An ideal candidate for a smartphone app.
