  1. Thinking of visiting the Wexford show this year instead, or SDMRC Sat and Wexford Sunday. I heard they have more 00 scale layouts and less sales exhibitors. Any thoughts from folk who've been to both exhibitions in the past? Seeing layouts is what interests me most at these sort of shows, not as interested in the trade stands, although I understand the economics of running these shows needs both.

The WMRC show is always worth a look (I would say that wouldn't I):)http://irishrailwaymodeller.com/showthread.php/4874-Wexford-Model-Railway-Club-Exhibition

  3. In reality, private enterprise does a better job at some things, while the state is better at others. Disciples of Marx and of Thatcher both fail to see this reality.

Well said. The State should always look out for the common good performing some services itself while overseeing that the private does least harm (which it signally failed to do with the banks). Business will always look to profit which may disadvantage people e.g. workers...

  4. Ah right, thanks, must have look again as I couldn't find any contacts or prices

Under "Contact" Mr Soundguy quotes an e-mail address and a UK telephone number. His name is Keith Pearson and a real nice bloke to deal with.

  5. I have now started on the the class 201 & will have pictures up later, in the main time, would any of the kind ladies or gentle men here have a photo of the new MMI console in the refurbished class two O one cabs that I can possibly use?

    Side note:

There will be no engine details in the 201 as I hope to dcc sound it with a 66/201 sound chip, would any here able to recommend a good model speaker & sound chip?

This may be Lego, but this model will be weathered & painted into its livery as the the livery I'm doing is near impossible to do in a 8 stud wide, 30 stud long model in Lego, hence the cheating.

    Tony.

Mr Soundguy (see: http://www.mrsoundguy.co.uk) does the best 201 soundproject on Zimo soundchips. The best speakers are the Bass Reflex from DCCsupplies.com (check if Zimo model needs 4 or 8 oHm resistance speaker). Hopefully the Lego model will have plenty of room to accommodate these. Mr Soundguy also does O gauge soundchips if you are building a very large model.

  6. You're actually talking about ESU Loksound V3.5 and V4.

Mr Soundguy did the first 141/181 sound decoder which was available from DCC supplies and was loaded onto a Loksound V3.5. For whatever reason, Mr Soundguy stopped working with DCC supplies and started supplying the 141 sound file for Model Shop Belfast on Zimo decoders.

You're right though in that the Loksound V3.5 file was never modified to be loaded on to the V4 which was only becoming available at the time. The V3.5 is no longer produced but can sometimes pick them up second hand. I believe DCC Supplies still has the 141 sound file and can "re blow" a V3.5 if you can get your hands on one.

The Irish sound recordings are copyright to Mr SoundGuy (not DCC Supplies or MSB). He now works exclusively with Zimo chips not ESU Loksound. Sound is expensive but only one of each class/livery need have sound as only one or at most two loco's sound can be heard at one time. Unfortunately, the basic soundchips have not come down in price over the years. Mr SoundGuy sells primarily through his own website now and can be contacted directly with queries/orders.

I only got to one open day at Whitehead but did not see any Guinness Grain wagons. The two in Alan McCuteon's book do not seem to have any roof hatches. Have you any more information on the grain wagons. They would make an interesting addition to my wagon stock. I have seen a picture of a 4 wheel wagon with the name Guinness printed on it but do not know if it is authentic.

I was not aware of the Alphagraphix Guinness bogie kit, it does not appear on their kit list that I have, which may be a bit out of date.

    MikeO

The Alphagraphix reference is CC72A or CC472B. The livery is grey "GN" No 609 "To carry 20 tons" with Guinness Dublin emblazoned on both sides! I got mine from Michael Morris at one of the Wexford exhibitions (€6). I haven't assembled mine but you would need a bogie chassis to make it operational.

  8. Evening guys,

What type of wood do you use a base?

I'm thinking 8'4 as next part of my layout..

I remember sundela use to be popular in the UK years ago..

    Cheers

    MJ

The book "First steps in railway modelling" by CJ Freezer has a detailed discussion on building baseboards. Marks Models and other outlets should have it available.

  9. Very nice models indeed!

There are two prototypical GNR bogie ones at Whitehead, in various states of advanced distress. As you obviously know, they were always standard GNR grey with simply the word "GUINNESS" added. They were used for carrying grain and had hatches on the roofs.

Alphagraphix do a card 4mm model of the Guinness bogie GNR wagon and Irish Freight Models do a Guinness tanktainer which looks nice: http://www.irishfreightmodels.com/index.php/shop.html#!/Guinness-Wagons/c/3461297/offset=0&sort=normal

  10. Was the Dapol?-made Lyon's Tea anything like the prototype or that is fictional too (suspect the latter). Any pictures of Ranks or Denny's?

Irish Freight Models do the Lyons Tea 4-wheel wagon (see video above). I tend to run the Kilkenny Coal, Pierce's wagons etc on Ballybeg just for fun and variety of colour while acknowledging they are not strictly authentic!

  11. Does anyone have pictures of the CIE TPO in green livery showing presence/absence of decals?

Just to answer my own question, I found two photos of a bogie P&T van at Downpatrick from 2007:

  12. A very nice Irish Freight models P&T van arrived yesterday and was coupled up to a B&T 141 rake of cravens and gsv. Nice crisp paint job too.

Should look at home on a 1960s and early 70s scene

Nice! I have ordered one in '5os green livery...

  13. From speaking to Gerry about his MIR 121s

there is simply not enough room in the body

for a speaker, mainly because of the gear towers

and height of the motor and twin fly wheels used

on the Athearn SW 1500 chassis that were normally

used on the MIR 121 body's.Obviously it would great

to use the 141 sound chip in the 121 body, and hope

any future MM 121 loco will have room for a speaker.

I am not sure as regards any US switchers that might

have sound on board that might fit the MIR 121.

Athearn SW1500 chassis from America have gotten very expensive especially with the weak Euro. I haven't seen any available with sound. There is no room in the MIR bodies to house a decent speaker. However, with a new design for 121, it should be easy to engineer the space for at least a Bass Enhanced speaker.

  14. Yes and Yes.

The 141/181s have a speaker cradle inside (i.e. mount) that will comfortably accommodate an uncased 20x40mm speaker. As Stephen has said the space is available but not for larger encased speakers such as bass reflex (i.e. which are housed in a plastic case). When installing a speaker one needs to solder wires from the speaker to two marked points on the loco's circuit board labelled SP+ and SP-. Sound decoders will then utilise this speaker.

Larger speakers can be installed, but as already explained by others require either cutting of the chassis block, or doctoring the speaker case. I had just asked Eamonn which he had opted for. I just popped mine in without any 'bodging' and soldered the pair of speaker wires to the loco.

I approached PM many times over the years pleading to have sufficient space included in his designs to accommodate a Bass Reflex speaker or at least a Bass Enhanced speaker. The small round speakers could never hope to reproduce the sound of 141/071/201 with any degree of authenticity particularly as chip/speaker technology develops. However, to no avail so far - will he leave enough room in the new 121s to house a decent speaker I wonder?
