Ballast on Irish Railways

Hi guys,

 

I was just wondering is there a type of ballast i should get that would be very typical of what is used on the irish railways around the country? Fine grey etc from woodland scenics.

That seems to be a good choice to me.

..but there are areas where ballast that is virtually pink is in evidence..

Hi John, the Woodlands scenics is good. But I got some from All Scales Models that looks really good. His prices are excellent too!

Cheers guys ill check out that all scales. Just out of curiosity but what causes the ballast to go pink? Is it due to dampness or oil and dirt reacting with the ballast or perhaps moss oxidising?

It's just different stone, it's pink from new - it actually gets less 'bright' as it ages/weathers. I think the pink stuff may be granite and the grey is limestone.
