K801 Posted April 1, 2020 Posted April 1, 2020 https://www.rte.ie/archives/2016/0330/778363-mail-train-robbery/ Anybody know what the chalk (?) writing is on the side of the van?
seagoebox Posted April 1, 2020 Posted April 1, 2020 (edited) Quote The train involved was the 21.20 mail ex Cork, staff loading the mail train vans at Cork would write on the coach bodyside in chalk what mails were to go in which van, so the bags could be easily located for unloading/sorting at stations along the line. The 21.20 stopped at Mallow, Charleville, Kilmallock, The Junction, Thurles, Ballybrophy, Portlaoise and Portarlington, taking 6 hours! Sometimes the instructions on the van could read, Mallow mails back right, Charleville mails back left etc, depending on volumes. Edited April 1, 2020 by seagoebox grammar!
