  1. Just reading over this again, FYI there are great views over the Noth Wall yard from Costa Coffee in the Point Village, attached to the cinema there. For some reason it seems to be the only window on the back of the entire complex, but you can see right down across the entire yard. Not sure how they would be if you took out a big camera and start snapping away, but at €3+ for a coffee I'd be making myself nice and cosy for an hour or two!

  2. Thanks Popeye and John! Yeah, I actually forgot about the SSM van, that looks like a good place to start! I'll pm you over the weekend John for one of your vans too.

The Park Royal looks great Popeye, and looking at all the fiddley bits underneath, might start with something a bit easier first! Thanks for the link as well John.

  4. Hi guys!

I'm going stir-crazy at the moment as new house equals no modelling and no money! :(( Anyways, I'll keep dreaming about the layout I'll have one day soon... In the mean time I've been slowly building up stock and doing some scratch building, and I love working with plasticard, but even thats been wrapped up for the moment in all the chaos of a move, all boxed away and all over the place!

So last weekend I finally got to carve out a little bit of space in the shed, so I at least have a little bit of workbench space, with some lighting and a heater installed. So I'm looking to get stuck in to a project, and one thing I would like to have on my layout is a small heritage line, with a little yard, really to show off models that wouldn't ordinarily belong in the era I want to model. So I'm thinking about trying a brass kit, which I've never tried before, and have absolutely no experience of working with. So what's involved? What kind of tools am I going to need?

I was thinking about a Worsley Works Park Royal or Laminate Coach, mostly because I know how they look, and there are plenty of reference pics available. Am I being ambitious as a first build?

    All input greatly appreciated!

  5. I agree Eiretrains, the train with the trunking would be a most interesting train to model. On that subject, I love freight, and I am amazed at the weird and wonderful images this site has thrown up over the last couple of years. The 10 to 15 years around the introduction of the 001s and C201s makes for some fantastic and unusual consists- I'm surprised it is not modelled more. I guess it's a period that not many of us remember, and would require a lot of scratch building and ingenuity on behalf of the modeller!

It's a period that site member Patrick (down in NZ? Oz?) has captured really well- I'd love to see his take on some of the wagons and consists pictured!

  6. I'm always full of questions so here goes...

Looking at the history of the D&SER and I was just reading up on the branch from Woodenbridge to Shillelagh. It closed to passangers in 1944 I think but kept open for freight until 1963.

The freight flow was to Aughrim, and specifically Fogarty's Mills (Flour).

What has suddenly made me interested is the closure date of the line, I'm wondering would it have seen an deisel locomotives in the last few years of its life? Also, what type of wagons would have been used at this stage?

    Any help appreciated!

  7. Can someone help me out here- am I right in thinking that a variation of one of these 4 wheelers ended up on the 90's formation of the weed spray train? I know I've a pic somewhere. I would be looking for 1 kit for this purpose please John. (will pm you)

Edit: just re-read your post, I'd be interested in a second to model the Hueston Tool van aswell.

  8. Haven't been on the railway in ages, but have just passed Fairview Dart Depot and spotted a 4-car Dart set with the new logo applied and the word 'DART' next to it in an awful font. Wasn't expecting it so no photo I'm afraid. Also surprised at how much graffiti there was on the rolling stock- at least 8 vehicles showing serious amount of damage.

  9. Well done indeed to all concerned!! Without getting on to too much detail, I'm assuming there are some costs associated with running the site? Is there an element of philanthropy from the founding members? Again, however the magic of d'internet works, I thoroughly enjoy the site, it's content, and the interaction! Great to see the stats too.

  10. Wow! Well done on this, I had a go at n-gauge and modelling Irish subjects but I was getting so frustrated at the fiddlyness (is that a word?!) that I gave up! The detail you have achieved on the rolling stock is fantastic! Did you find it difficult to get a chassis that would fit under the 071's? The layout itself looks great and really captures the feel of Connolly. Lolling forward to see this progressing further!

  11. Leave it as is! The core of the site will always be Irish Railways themed. We're a small community and it's great to see other forums being set up under the overall banner, it adds interest, and it keeps the site alive and fresh. Why can't the name of the site have both meanings? I fall in to both categories- I model Irish railways, and am Irish.

I'm really concerned about Anthony's post. My layout lies in about 20 different pieces at the moment, all at various stages of completion. Should I leave the forum because I don't currently have anything of interest to post? If you want this to be an exclusive little club for a handful of select contributors that's an awful shame. I'm in my 30's and hope to be contributing to the banter here for many years to come. When time an money permit I will reveal work and layout, but I'm sure like many others on this site, the craic banter and knowledge that is share on here is the most important reason for logging on after a hard days work.

  12. I'm greatly drawn to the Irish Rail era 80's into the 90's. My Grandparents lived in Eastwall opposite the old signal box on West Road. I loved visiting on a weekday when there used to be so much to see back then! A's struggling up the incline from the North wall yards with a variety of different freights, NIR stock, and the various other passenger trains of the time. I realise now that this greatly influenced my choice of era! I never though I'd see the day that we would have so much choice in terms of rtr and kits relating to the Irish scene.

  13. Anyone know how many 60' Timber wagons are in play? Do rakes of timber wagon cross paths at any stage on the network? I also witnessed 20' timber wagons (loaded) stabled at Grand Canal Dock at weekends for a time in the early 2000's. I assume originating from Sligo. What was the reason for this? Were they running via the Rosslare line for a time? Maybe remodelling of the North Wall yard was going on and no capacity there to run around? Answers on a postcard please!

  14. More variety in the trailer department- 3 axle cement hoppers, bulk grain tippers, petrol tankers etc., and modern 4-axle cement and tipper bodied trucks (hino's and DAF's) that took over the country's roads during the boom! Large yard fork trucks to go alongside the reach stacker. Early 90's cabs, ERF, Bedfords, DAF 3000's, Volvos.... All of the above please!
