  1. Thanks, anything else I should get or major newbie pitfalls to avoid ?
  2. I got #201 - second hand but never run so effectively new : Here she is sitting with the rest of the fleet starting to expand but a long way to go to catch up with some folks on here ! BTW excuse the layout, its only temporary and actually sitting on what should be the dining room table! hence the lack of space to have bigger curves.
  3. I've decided time to try my hand at building a kit model - going to start with 'hopefully' something relatively simple which is the Dapol 20T Tanker - C034. Looking for advice on best adhesive to use ? For that matter I'd appreciate any input on what are the key tools needed! I have some of the basics like tweezers, scalpel, cutting mat etc. Dont think I will be able to invest in an airbrush just yet so will have to be brush. What else do I need ? All advice welcome for a first time modeller!
  4. I posted this question in the 'photo' thread of the MM201 which was probably the wrong place so I'll try here Got a new MM201 at the weekend but I notice that the wheels rub off the back of the coupling when going around even the 3rd radius (Hornby R609) curves when there are no coaches on - the couplings are spring loaded so are at their furthest back point without any load. Is this normal ? Overall its a fantastic model and I put the MM DCC chip into it also which is great. I know I should have bigger curves but limited space at the moment and lucky to be able to have this size!
  5. Dont mean to hijack your thread but I've been looking for some Irish freight and also some practice at kit-building so think this might be a good place to start! Just ordered 2 of the C034 kits from ebay so must work on getting the transfers now! Might start my first workbench thread when they arrive
  6. Hi, I just got my first MM201 today and have a noticed a "problem" where even on the third radius curves (Hornby R609) the wheels rub against the back of the coupling as it goes around. At the moment I dont have any coaches on so the coupling is not loaded (so back as far as it will ever be) but that will always be the case on at least one end of the loco. Just wondering has anyone else noticed this or is there any adjustment that can be made ? I did remove the actual NEM coupler itself but the wheels still touch what is left. Thanks, Declan.
  7. Thanks for all the advice - I have it running in as we speak, is running DCC alright but I guess that shouldn't make and difference.
  8. Should clarify that the screwdriver is only used with very gentle pressure to provide a little leverage. On the 141s I've tried to remove neither of them simply pulled off I know the official instructions say to just squeeze the sides and lift up but it didnt work for me after nearly 20 mins and very sore fingers! Following the instructions (suggesting the screwdriver leverage) the body came off immediately and no damage to anything. However, I guess like everything do so at your own risk!!
  9. Will have a look at this, however the whole concept of needing 'gentle persuasion' scares me I'm a big fan of screws what you can remove and know things will come apart rather than using 'gentle persuasion' and hope that you are pulling the right pieces! BTW on a related note, I dont remember who replied to a thread I had on the old site about removing the body on the 141s using a screwdriver to lever the roof off after taking one cab end off - worked a dream on this one so thanks very much whoever it was
  10. It is #177 - my first step in the weathering direction!
  11. Hi, What do you do when you get a new loco ? I know (for me anyway ) the temptation is to get it on the layout immediately but should it really be 'run in' slowly first in both directions ? If so, for how long ? Also a lot of stock has probably been sitting on a shelf for months (if not years!) so is it standard practice to re-lubricate everything ? I just got a 'new' 141 today and it got me thinking, on that model in particular there does not appear to be any easy access to lubricate the cogs, worm drive, motor etc. Unless you take it apart seems all you can really get to are the axles which may not do much good. Maybe a 'sticky' would be good for the less experienced around here (i.e. me !) to show how you should prepare a new loco. Declan.
  12. Apologies if this is a repost, but it was new to me and I have to say very interesting to see how it used to be done!
  13. May be interested in the 201's depending on the price.
  14. Hi, Is there some setting to enable getting an email notification of a new PM ? Doesnt seem to happen at the moment, if I log in to the site I get a pop-up box alright and the notification shows in the top bar but an email would be nice Thanks, Declan.
  15. Sorry - should probably have made it clear, yes I was talking to you :-) Only looking for the one at the moment unless you are going to do me a reallygood deal!
  16. Think its time to start introducing some of the weathered variety to my collection! Do you have any #177 available ?
  17. Hi, Just saying hello! Only starting out really and in the process of planning the layout so might have lots of questions Decided to focus on the Irish locos in the main (I'm sure there will be other stuff on there also) so starting to build up some stock at the moment while deciding what the final layout will look like. Only have a temp layout right now where I'm trying out various things including train detection and auto signal control etc. New site looks great, was only on the other one for about 2 weeks. Declan.
