  1. The middle of March 2025 saw me in Italy and Switzerland. While not a full enthusiast trip in Italy, I did manage to get to Cassino and spend an unintended spell in Milan (my planned route from Rome to Zurich was via Domodossola, but due to the train from Rome being an hour late the more direct route had to be taken). A spin out to Chur and the street running there followed, along with a slow run back to Zurich stopping off (and walking a section) along the way. Click on the photo below to view them all

  2. At the beginning of March, I visited the Netherlands for a concert in Haarlem (Unleash the Archers for those interested). Of course I squeezed in some travelling across the Dutch rail network, and instead of flying back from Amsterdam decided to do the more classic train - ferry option (with Eurostar replacing the cross-channel ferry). Not wanting to derail this thread but how is set 22002 now disbanded? Wasn't this set part of the ETCS testing along with 22001.

Not for a long time. 22001 was the test bed for IEHS and was semi-permanently formed for a good while with 22002 as a "6" ICR. When IEHS was dropped, 22001 became the test bed for ETCS but was done in a way that the equipment could be swapped with standard equipment, thus only withdrawing the set when required. 22002 returned to being a 3 ICR and part of the usual fleet with no restrictions.

With 22039's incident in Westport, it was decided to swap 22202 with 22139 to retain a 6 ICR with NIR equipment, and reallocate the centre car from 22002 to form another 4 ICR.

The M3 Parkway line is one of the few bits of the network I haven’t travelled on, so I’m planning to do a trip from Docklands on Friday afternoon this week (I’ll be in Dublin for the RPSI tour on Saturday).
I note that there are a couple of direct trains from M3 Parkway to Connolly in the evening. Does anyone know which route they take?

    M3 Parkway - Clonsilla - Drumcondra - Connolly.

Yeah, just saw that. The ratio of wagon weight to payload does seem high compared to some of the U.K. stock. Over all figure keeps the axle load below 22 tonnes. Some of the pocket container wagons do not seem that old so I presume they will be excluded. Wonder what the wagon types will be.

Not really. A TEA tank is 24 tonnes empty 102 tonnes laded.

Just an update on this topic. The last 3 sets of 2700s were removed from Cork shed on Tuesday for their final trip to Inchicore for scrapping. Freshly painted 083 did the honors fitted with a Dellner coupling adaptor.

    Not the last sets

    Hi Kieran,

Just looking through this album now, great to see the Fenniarail loco's in action. I'm really happy you got to see their loco 102 also. Do you know anything more about this company, as in what they are hauling these days. They were one of the first private operators in Finland, and I know prior to the war that they had been approved (or were close to approval) for cross border mineral flows between Finland and Russia, across one of the more northerly freight only rail crossings. I believe they purchased 6 locomotives like the 102 to.service this flow.

At the moment they have 6x Dr18s (CZ 774s) and currently the one Vectron but two more due for delivery this year. Their website is an interesting read https://www.fenniarail.fi/en/kalusto, and appears to be doing a lot of timber work. One of the Dr18s derailed in Tampere somewhat recently (track spread) so they seem to be expanding operations around. Makes a change to a constant stream of VR traffic!

It has always baffled me how differently countries tackle the same problem, whether on our roads or railways. Propelling trains is a no no over in the UK, whereas it is par for the course in Ireland.

It's a no-no here too except in very specific circumstances

In Finland however they propel 13 coach trains 2 miles from the depot into Helsinki station and vice versa for the Kemijärvi sleepers. Shunter travels in the front/rear coach with a radio.

  9. December 2024 primarily featured a trip to Finland, with an interlude in the middle to go to the annual Raskasta Jouloa tour in Tampere (to experience Christmas songs in their proper metal context!). The first day was a simple enough spin from Helsinki Airport to Kouvola. Click on the photo below to view them all

Obviously, IR aren't reading Modern Railways which is full of misery stories of hydrogen trains being withdrawn IN GERMANY where they know a bit about engineering - and being replaced by DIESELS.

Very different hydrogen style of operation though it has to be said (although the issues with supply still apply). The German ones are fuel cell technology while the 071 conversion is internal combustion of hydrogen

Signalling marches on: installation of ETCS level 1 from Greystones to Dundalk is complete, ready for the new Darts to use when they arrive and are tested. I assume going all the way to Dundalk will save Irish Rail some bother when the new Enterprises roll in. Hopefully they get started with wiring up to Maynooth sooner or later: Irish Rail's network statement (see Annex 1, p37) has several track lowering possessions pencilled in. The first one on the M3 Parkway branch has already happened: has anyone spotted any differences?

I'd take that list with a pinch of salt. For example that M3 Parkway branch one didn't happen. It's a guide but things move around

  12. October 2024 started with a slightly long weekend to Utrecht (to see Charlotte Wessels on the Friday night) and Birmingham (to see Arch Enemy on the Saturday night), before heading home to remember where home was. Click on the photo below to view them all

I did remember to take a few railway photos in Ireland in between various other trips! They are here, and mainly cover the RPSI "Croagh Patrick" trip to Westport and Ballina

085 is now being converted, but it's components are going to be kept as intact as possible incase the hydrogen thing doesn't work out. Apparently there's only a range of ~50 km so if they go into proper service they'll require a hydrogen tender!

About the fifth loco I've heard to be converted!

Ultimately new locos should be bought rather than messing around like this

  14. September 2024 saw the first of three trips in short succession to the Netherlands for two concerts and a work conference.

The first day was a simple enough trip from Amsterdam to Apeldoorn via Amersfoort.

    Netherlands, 14/9/24

The following day was a more involved day, with a good amount spent on the VSM railway in Apeldoorn, before a circuitous route from Apeldoorn to Amsterdam and return to catch the Berlin train on divert via Lelystad

    Netherlands, 15/9/24

The third day was a trip to Paschendale, where I had ancestors fighting in the First World War. Having started at Apeldoorn, I finished in Utrecht

    Netherlands / Belgium, 16/9/24

Day 4 of this particular trip was a day trip to the railway museum in Utrecht, along with a quick spin to Amersfoort before the Marko Hietala concert

    Netherlands, 17/9/24

The final day was just killing time before the flight back to Dublin, with a trip back from Utrecht to Amsterdam via Ede-Wageningen, Amersfoort, Amsterdam Science Park and Hilversum

    Netherlands, 18/9/24

Click on any of the photos to view them all from that day

    Regards,

    Kieran
