Cavalex Models have announced a Class 47 in OO Gauge.

If it turns out anything like their Class 56, I’m sold.

Available to pre-order from Rails of Sheffield. Pricing not announced, as far as I can see.

No prices yet and pre tooling ready cad which is probably why. The 56 is ok but i’m waiting for the retooling to move the bogies forward the 2mm they are out of place before i buy.

I’ve gotten used to the look of my 56 now so the milimetre no longer bothers me. Think they announced another run of the 56’s a while back but not sure.

A 47 in Intercity Executive livery will be smashing, but I’m waiting to see what the RMW vultures make of the Engineering Prototypes before ordering.

It’s just under 2mm and perhaps i’m a little OCD but the cab overhang on both ends is totally jarring.

They did confirm in an article with Andy York (rip) it’s been retooled for this next run so we live in hope.

On the 47 the bachmann is brand new tooling and Heljan are in the mix but at the current status it’s 2-3 years out for this new effort.

I probably won’t bother with another 56 either way, re-tooled or not.

So, by the time the 47 arrives, the Bachmann and Heljan models will be long sold-out. At least they got the timing perfect!

Lol. Bach I know have many 46’s coming in a steady flow over the coming years. Will be interesting to see how it goes particularly as the track record isn’t great with accuracy with the other chaps :)

Are Cavalex that bad for accuracy overall?

My Class 60 hasn’t arrived yet so I can’t comment on that, but aside from the 56 bogies, I don’t remember seeing much else on RMW - although I have to admit that the volume of posts in there makes it hard to keep up.

What would the other stand-outs be?

some interesting photos on the accurascale 60 threads as an example but generally you get attacked for suggesting the emperor has no clothes :)

In the 60 just put it beside a hornby or accurascale and the error will be self explanatory

A/S Class 60’s must be about to ship soon? Don’t have a Hornby one, so it will be Cavalex and A/S side by side.

Some discussion on RMW of roof profiles. Some people say the Cavalex isn’t bulbous enough. Some people say the Hornby is too bulbous. Some say it’s the perspective of the image.

First thousand or so and most retailers already away :)

If you read on you can see the ‘opinion’ is nullified by the cold hard data of laser scans overlaid on CAD confirming the accuracy of the acc (and the Hornby one, those lads knew how to make a model)

Mine can’t be far off, so!

RMW is a pain for finding stuff, but will keep digging.

Just found it as you posted this - I had been looking at the Cavalex Class 60 thread, not the A/S one!

Looks like the Cavalex Class 60 body sits too low on the chassis, compared to the A/S and Hornby models. Needs to be lifted up maybe 2mm with some kind of bracing to match the others.

The Heljan Class 47 gets lumps kicked out of it for being too “tubby” and the Bachmann 47 for being crap inside for upgrades, having poor driving characteristics, and undesireable livery options.

Hopefully, Cavalex get the 47 right, avoiding all of these pitfalls.

No the body sits ok, it’s just the wrong shape. The danger when you measure and eyeball rather than laser scan too as we found to our own peril in the early days. The roof is a complex set of curves not just a dome for example. As i said my detail brain gets upset when things are blatantly inaccurate but im sure some will find it tolerable.

They can only learn from this for the 47.

I’m now even more keen to see my 60’s!

Hopefully they’re not actually ‘in tooling’ in that case or eventually see the merit of laser scans to ‘check the homework’ otherwise i expect it might be three for three on dimensional and shape errors.

That’d be a huge shame, so fingers crossed. It doesn’t sound like they’re in tooling yet, based on Rails of Sheffield’s wording and the lack of pricing info.
