Irish Rail Mark 3 Numbering Guide

Mark 3 Control Car (61xx)
6101-6105 = Built under license at the Inchicore Works. 6105 was one of the last carriages constructed at Inchicore. They were designed in the UK, with finishing being carried out at Inchicore. The Mark 3s were assembled with parts from BREL.

 

Mark 3 Suburban/push-pull (63xx)
6301-6319 = Built under license in the Inchicore Works. Almost identical to their Mainline counterparts, except for opening windows due to the lack of air conditioning.

 

International Mark 3 Restaurant (6401)
6401 = Ex-BR 99523, renumbered as 6401 in IÉ ownership. It was the only Buffet Standard (BSO) of the Mark 3 International fleet. 

International Mark 3s (62xx)
6201 = Ex-BR 99521 BFK (Brake First Corridor).

6202-6208 = Ex-BR TSO (Tourist Standard Open).

 

Mark 3 Café/Bar (6402)
6402 = Purchased from the UK in 2004, ex-HST TRFK (Trailer Restaurant First Kitchen) No. E40513 from 1979. Interfleet converted it into "Cafe/Bar" number 6402. It only saw 4-5 years of service with Irish Rail before being withdrawn in 2009. 6402 usually would have worked alongside the Push-Pull Mark 3s on the Waterford route.

 

Mainline Mark 3s (71xx)
7101-7103, 7105-7106, 7108-7132, 7134-7146, 7148-7155, 7158-7164 = Standard Class, 72 seats.
7107, 7147, 7157 = Standard Class with 64 seats, with 7147 having a wheelchair space.

7165-7172 = Composites, 32 1st Class and 36 Standard Class seating.

7104, 7133, 7156 = Citygold vehicles, 48 First Class seats.

7161 and 7162 = Executive carriages.

 

Mark 3 Restaurant (74xx)
7401-7405 = Built by BREL at Derby Litchurch Lane Works.

7406-7413 = Built under License at the Inchicore Works.

(Both batches had 29 Standard Class seating)

 

Mark 3 EGV (76xx)
7601-7607 = Built by BREL at Derby Litchurch Lane Works.

7608-7615 = Built under License at the Inchicore Works.

 

Duration of the Mark 3s by type:

"Cú Na Mara" Mark 3:
1994-2008 (14/04/08).

Regular IÉ Mark 3:
1984-2009 (28/09/09), 2010 (IRRS railtour 24/04/10).

Mark 3 Push-pull:
1989-2009.

An added snippet that may be of interest - 6208 was unique because it had the BT10-derived bogies from a Mk3 rather than the T4-derived bogies of the International stock. Although branded for the Cu na Mara, it was often marshalled in Mk3 rakes. Some pics in this thread:

Ah, yes! I believe it was numbered as 7173. Part of me wonders why it was often paired with the other Mark 3s.

Interesting. It was 6208 at one stage, but that 7173 looks like the same vehicle. 

I suspect the bogie maintenance intervals may have influenced the usage?

Interesting - so some of the Belmod coaches join the short list of Irish-built rail vehicles to run in GB.

On another note, the last time a Mark 3 Suburban/Push-Pull set was ever used was on the 09:15 Galway-Heuston service, pushed by 201 Class No. 234 "River Aherlow" and led by 6104. This occurred on the 3rd of June 2009.
The consist ran as (from front-to-rear) 6104 + 6319 + 6303 + 6314 + 6312 + 6318 + 234.

The last time the Mark 3s were ever used in regular service was the 13:45 Heuston-Cork, hauled by 201 Class No. 219 "River Tolka". This occurred on the 21st of September 2009.
The consist ran as (from front-to-rear) 219 + 7602 + 7168 + 7407 + 7157 + 7144 + 7143 + 7115.
