201bhoy Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 (edited) Did anyone see the enterprise at Great Victoria street back in April? I was away at the time and didn't hear anything about it until today. Apparently it was diverted because of a points failure. Edited May 19, 2012 by 201bhoy Quote
Flying Scotsman 4472 Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 For the life of me I just can't understand why NIR do not terminate the Enterprise at GVS instead of that hell hole they call Central Station. Quote
201bhoy Posted May 20, 2012 Author Posted May 20, 2012 It's ridiculous. When you have a perfectly good station right at the heart of the city, why not use it?! Quote
josefstadt Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 Certainly GVS would be a far more convenient terminus for the Enterprise for people travelling to Belfast city centre. And moving it from Central would not worsen its connectivity with other services as I think that most, if not all services, on the Bangor, Larne and Derry lines also use GVS. If I remember correctly the excuse given for keeping the Enterprise at Central was lack of platform capacity at GVS, given the long lie overs of the trains in Belfast. To get around this problem there was talk at one stage of building an additional platform at GVS, on part of the bus depot site (on the right in the photos), to handle Enterprise services. Quote
201bhoy Posted May 20, 2012 Author Posted May 20, 2012 Well I think they will eventually make GVS the main station... some time! And you're probably right about the bus depot, although apparently there are plans for seven platfoms in total, not just one more! Quote
Garfield Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 Belfast Central must surely earn the title of 'Most Inappropriately-named Station on the Island' award. Central it ain't... Quote
201bhoy Posted May 20, 2012 Author Posted May 20, 2012 It's called that because it was located on the trackbed of the Belfast Central Railway. 1 Quote
Garfield Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 It's called that because it was located on the trackbed of the Belfast Central Railway. You couldn't just enjoy the joke, could you? Quote
201bhoy Posted May 20, 2012 Author Posted May 20, 2012 I know I know just couldn't resist... As the American video about Irish rail says "it's not at all centrally located, it's actually situated on the outskirts of the city". Ok, too far mate! Quote
