Amtrak's Northeastern Regional train derailed on Tuesday evening killing 8 and injuring about 200 people. The electric train was doing 102mph on a curve with a speed restriction of 50mph and 80 mph on the approach and accelerated from 70mph to 106mph in the minute prior to derailment, being braked back to 102mph just before impact according to the trains data recorders. The driver survived with a relatively minor head injury and has retrograde amnesia and doesn't recall the events just prior to the accident. To complicate matters further, Amtrak was supposed to install a train control system, to limit speeds similar to a CAWS system on IR (feel free to contribute/correct the information if that is incorrect from a technical standpoint).
