jhb171achill Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 (edited) Forty years ago on Tuesday, CIE withdrew all services from the following routes, all of which except Loughrea were goods-only, having lost their passenger services in 1963, or in the case of Ardee, about 1933. Collooney - Claremorris (The "Burma Road") Attymon Junction - Loughrea (the last traditional country branch, last mixed trains, and last cattle traffic in Ireland) Ballingrane Junction - Listowel (Listowel - Tralee would remain (at least officially) for a short time afterwards) Dromin Junction - Ardee Rest in peace! h gricer Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Attymon Junction - Loughrea (the last traditional country branch, last mixed trains, and last cattle traffic in Ireland) Superb photos of the Loughrea Branch in the current IRRS Journal no188, lovely photos of B209 on ''mixed trains'' and photos of A3r, A26r, A class workings where rare on the branch, a lovely variety of photos including 2 black & white photos, there's something magic about sharp black & white photos, they really belong to another magic era. Mayner Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 JHB any idea when goods trains stopped running to Abbeyfeale? The last services to Newcastle West, Ardee, Loughrea and over the Burma Road are all well documented, but nothing on when the Tralee-Abbefeale goods was cut back to Listowel. The daily Limerick-Tralee goods train was replaced by Limerick-Newcastle & Tralee-Abbeyfeale goods trains in the early 70s and the line over Barnagh closed to regular services, but was open for specials and as a diversionary route Quote
