  1. Hi Rory,

Sounds like arcing between the rails, the power is jumping from one track to the other and generating heat as a result. I never rely on the joints in the track to distribute power, I solder droppers to every piece of track.

As dirt builds up between the rail and the joiner the electrical connectivity breaks down and arcing is produced.

Have you got power connected in just one place or spread equally around the layout?

  2. Yea, but look at the massive cost. That cab was more expensive than most mid to top end entire DCC systems!!! The cost of 'Mobile Control II' cab was the reason I choose NCE and JMRI with iPhone for wireless touch cabs, over ESU. Also didn't like their 'playstation' twin controller more suited to train set layouts.

I agree it's very expensive, I really like the Z21 and linked to the Roco multimaus as a throttle is a great combination that quite a few of my customers use. The Z21 app makes programming simple and the multimaus is easy to use.

But as you say it's an antiquated technology and really needs to be brought into the 21st century.

  3. Hi Dave,

Any 6-function suitable for 071 class?

They don't have an integral capacitor for Stay Alive but that is an optional extra is what I understood from your post?

Have they actually been tested with ABC modules (the Loksound seemingly misbehaves with this although that is also NMRA compliant)

I presume it is one of these? http://laisdcc.com/decoders/

    Thanks

They are just 4 function decoders. They will work in an 071 but the cab lights won't work.

The stay alive capacitor is an optional extra, there are 2 wires coming from the decoder where the capacitor is fitted.

I don't think they have been tested with automatic brake control, but I'll ask the manufacturer.

Yes they are the ones in the link.

    Here is the manual

  5. Fantastic! I'd be tempted to just switch off the phone for a few weeks and 'forget' to deliver it. Grab a few beers for yourself and just watch some trains go round! Well done, fantastic build and thanks for sharing. Owner will be very pleased!

I wish I could. This layout took over the workshop for the last 5 months as it was fully assembled which meant the workshop was out of action.

  6. Speechless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:tumbsup: Must be everyone on this forums dream. The ship is something else as well. How did you do that Dave??? :fingersintheair:

The ship was a kit from Deans Marine, it's 1:76 scale MV Fairwind. But it's a crap kit badly marked out and was a nightmare to put together. I won't be doing another!

  7. Thanks lads, it's been a long build over a year and I can't see myself doing another one as a lot of orders backed up as the layout took over the workshop. I think the only way I would do it again would be another workshop and just spend one or two days a week on it.

To answer some of your questions:

It breaks down into 8 sections, 3 on each side then the viaduct and the lift up section on the other end. I transported it by trailer with a racking system in it.

The cost was massive! That's all I'm saying!

There are 3 Heljan cranes Weshty! 2 in the port and a non working one on the other side.

I have some video showing the level crossing and faller truck in action as well as the ship smoke and sound! I'll try to get that uploaded later in the week.

Thanks again for all your kind words.
