  1. Good points Eoin. We used 3x1" vertical support around the edges of the baseboards, with 2x1" vertical cross members on both axis, all screwed and glued to the ply baseboard. The legs are free standing on their own folding sub-frames. I've only moved the layout twice before. It took a whole day to split the sections using the butterfly bolts, move it, and reconnect everything. Each board has its own sets of old style 25pin D-type computer connectors for the electrics (i.e. track feeds to the old DC sections).

The 3" vertical edges seems to have created a degree of stability as well as strength. I can climb up onto the boards if needed no problem.

    Very well constructed Noel.

  2. My track is laid and wired and running well. I have a list of jobs that need doing but can anyone suggest what order I do these. Don't want to run into trouble later.

    Point Controls

    Painting and weathering my rails

    Ballasting

    Laying dummy point control kits

    Thanks

    Hi Tony,

When I'm building clients layouts I fit the point control after laying and wiring the track. Then I test everything. The next stage is to airbrush the track in sleeper grime, then fit the dummy point motors along with signals and Yard Lights as these look better ballasted in.

I also start basic scenery before I ballast such as plaster bandage as this can be very messy and difficult to remove from ballast.

Then ballast and I go over the track with the airbrush and lightly weather the ballast. If you weather the track after ballasting without painting the track first the ballast looks too dirty and typically ballast is quite clean unless it's a yard or siding.

Ultimately it's personal choice and rule 1 applies, it's your layout, your rules!

  3. Omaha North had a total re-wiring over the past few days. All cables were re-routed around the baseboard edges under bell-wire clips and away from paintwork. I am seriously considering the Megatracks point system that controls up to 12 points from one board. Tomorrow I have to make one final linking of cables to new front panel mounted board and I can start of the platforms.

    Hi Tony,

Have a look at my YouTube channel, I have some videos on the MegaPoints system. I'm the agent for Ireland and have them in stock as well as custom made cables and mounting brackets.

  4. Well after moving to Valleymount which turned out to be a complete disaster. The landlord said it was dry but after the first heavy rain fall I had nearly 20 leaks in the roof! He refused to repair it properly.

There was over €600 worth of damage done to a layout. So I had to find somewhere more suitable.

I have moved to a more modern unit in Edenderry, Co. Offaly as I moved to Carbury its only 10 mins from the house.

  5. Hi guys,

I have a client bought an 8' x 4' baseboard from me a few years ago. He has moved and no longer has the space for it. It's painted grey on the top and has a few holes in it from his layout. It's in 3 sections with legs and is easy to put together.

New this is worth €290, so it's a bargin for free!

If you want it you need to make arrangements to collect it from Donnybrook in Dublin.
