1. It boils down to this Tony - if you want prototype fidelity and slow speed shunting 4mm, even 7mm is where you need to be at. Plenty stock available, all sorts of track permutations abound, and relatively easy to scratchbuild buildings in 4mm.

But, if you want to replicate something that means so much and just "play trains" with a squinted eye, as repainted graham farish lookalikes spin around, then N gauge might be the way to go.

Answer that conundrum first, then worry about finessing shapeways toothpaste prints, P4 back-to-back gauges, or any of the more quarrelsome issues of gauge/scale. Figure out what you want out of this on a wet saturday evening, with a beverage of choice when it's all done and dusted - then proceed.

I wouldn't agree with you there Richie, I have built a small N gauge American layout with shunting and continuous running in mind. I can run trains very slowly for shunting, I never had a problem with them stalling at slow speeds.

That's a stunning model Derek, buses were never my thing but that's a beauty. Lovely crisp detail. I could be tempted!

  3. Unfortunately Peco bull head rail is a very limited range. Only the flex track is currently available and at the start of October 1 point will be available which is the large radius.

I contacted Peco last week about the range and the answer I got was that they may introduce more points into the range in the future!

    Typical Peco!

I contacted them last year regarding the code 75 concrete sleeper range as currently there is only one concrete sleeper point available and there response was that they do not have any plans to increase that range!

They are an old fashioned company and are not meeting their customers demands.

Another option is Tillig track, the points are stunning but it's only available in code 83.

Marcway is another option and a good range too.

  4. Looking for a body damaged or body soiled 141/181 for sale at a reasonable price? It as a donor chassis I'm after, don't care what condition the body is in once the chassis is running properly and the bogies are undamaged. Its a long shot but worth a try. :)

Would you believe Eoin was given a present of one that was damaged. Bought in a charity shop for a fiver!

  5. Hi

Well on a busy Friday morning last in Greystones

617 setout from the shop with a light train for its first trials, things did not go well and the lads had to limp back to the shop. They did take in the sights and snapped a few shots while stopped at the Breeches waiting for the Wicklow Commuter to go by, and have a chat with Paddy- who has been working on that rock removal for the past year....

Back in the workshop with assessment made it was decided that the electrical pick up was the main problem for failure and I set about improving this- two PB strips were made up to push against the wheel boss from the underside, making contact with the wheels and the chassis improved the pick up immensely.

Springs n wheels in place and keeper plate about to go on.

Then off to the test track......

    Eoin

Looks fantastic Eoin. I'd say the signalman is sunburned with the light so bright in the signal box!

  6. New to the model railroad scene but planning on getting to this as my first exhibition. Hope to get a few ideas for setting up a layout with the other half, looking to get info on baseboards and general track construction

    Hi Speedy,

I'll be there with an exhibition baseboard. Call over and I can help you out.
