Any major info about the IE 201 Class?
228RiverOwenboy replied to 228RiverOwenboy's topic in General Chat
Hello everyone, and happy 2022. I just want to thank everyone for the information given to me, as this really helps me with the current project I have been working on for a while. I have just realized that at some point the 201s that were in the Intercity Silver/Green have had their undercarriage painted into a dark grey rather than the former ghost grey. Was the reasoning similar to why the A Class were quickly put into a different livery due to the ghost grey being very vulnerable to dirt? Here's 218 freshly painted into her current livery, the Intercity Silver/Green. Note that the undercarriage was originally the ghost grey I previously mentioned. (Credit: Brain Solomon) And then here's 223 the more current dark grey undercarriage rather than a ghost grey... (Credit: unknown) -

Would anyone know the dates of when the entirety (Except 201 herself) of the 201 Class were delivered? Apparently, on the 24th March 1995, 228, 229, 230 and 231 were unloaded on North Wall Quay Extension, 231, 229 were hauled to Inchicore by 157, 228 and 230 were hauled by 143 to Inchicore Oh, and yes please, I've been looking for blueprints for a long time. Thank you in advance! -

Slightly off topic - but would anyone have any diagrams/blueprints of some of the Mark 3 rolling stock, such as the EGV and the Control car? I may model one soon Ah, fantastic! I wonder when these were both installed and removed... -

Ah, so that explains it, the mirrors were used for checking if all the slam-doors rolling stock were closed before departure...Or something like that... -

Good evening everyone, I'd like to thank everyone here for providing some crucial information to my ongoing project. I've just realized something...were mirrors installed on the 201 class? -

Speaking of incidents and accidents, has there been any other situations involved with the 201? I'm aware 225 once derailed in Mayo, 233 had a failed bearing, 224 bent, 230 caught fire, 211 was in the Knockcroghery derailment...And what else? -

Would anyone know what 201 involved in this incident would be? It's a 201 that hauled a Mark 3 set which derailed in Knockcroghery...Any other info about the incident, such as the cause? -

That actually does remind me, apparently 229 was the last one to have one of the old Intercity logos before it got replaced with the Iarnrod Eireann logo, but I'm not really sure -

Anything about 230? I heard she had repairs in 2017 in the shed, and now she's moved out of it into a siding, coupled to an Orange 201 -

Lovely! I've added the majority of the info onto the script...Now I just need some more technical information about these absolute units; for example, is there any difference between their engine and the 66's. Thank you all for all of this, it has really helped me with my project. Funny enough, the first time I saw one of these in the Intercity Green and Silver livery, I genuinely thought that the chassis' colour was pure black, since it was so dark from the dirt! -

Apparently number 214 was the first one to receive it, but I'm not sure if it's true or whatnot -

I do apologize for the low quality, as it was the best close-ups I could really find. But there has to be some kind of difference, the light's shape must've been changed a little, since the 201s nowadays have a rounded and smoother shape. -

I do have one question, when did the 201s receive their overhauls? And when did their lights get changed? As I've noticed that they're now more flat and rounded than a few years back when they were square and boxy And thank you very much with the technical facts! I'm currently working on a video of the entire history of the 201 Class -

I'm mostly on about the 1994 ones, which still run today -
Good afternoon everyone, I'm currently making plans on a historical video of the history of the 201 class, and I was wondering if there was anything noticeable about them, and if there was anything major that would be crucial to add into the script, or hopefully some misconceptions that could be corrected.

We all know the infamous no.230 as it caught fire in June 2013 due to the HEP system overheating and catching fire; since then, she has been sitting in a siding located at Inchicore whereas she sat in the works at some point. Apparently, there are indications that Irish Rail were repairing the locomotive using parts from stored class member 211. So...Will she ever return?
-
Most likely, I actually saw her a month prior to her incident!
-
Well, the reason why 224 failed was because of that of a weld repair to a non-structural bed plate had been unnecessarily applied to a structural chassis plate, causing an eventual structural failure of the locomotive. A bent no.224 brought to the Inchicore Works, July 2020
-
Mhm. It'd be very illogical if Irish Rail retained the majority of the A Class, they already have the 071s and 201s which are more flexible and more powerful...There's only so many issues with keeping locos over the age of 40 in service, there's major aspects such as scarce spare parts (especially with over 50+ A Class locos), expensive maintenance and immense fuel consumption.
-
Now, I'd like to add that the A Class were pretty obsolete, and would definitely not reach the standards to pull anything of today's rolling stock (well, except freight...if anything). Plus, it was inevitable that they were going to be withdrawn, sure, they were about 39-40 years old...They were bound to be replaced by more powerful locos
-
If I remember correctly, this plan either never came to fruition or was cancelled in 2019
-
So, where's 224 now?
