  1. More of the TPO's' date=' even if they're not spot on for the Irish ones. I've a thing about these since they were so illusive, and would look excellent with Weshty's "P&T" decals.[/quote']

    Exactly Ritchie,

It's very hard to find any decent photos of Irish TPOs,

I could only work off photos from the Doyle & Hirsch books which were good but limited in there views of the carriages.

Are you doing a GAA special for the Final' date=' you'll have to make up a special, perhaps cravens with a pair of 141s.

    Regards

    hg[/quote']

That can be arranged hg,Watch this space.....

I'll never forget the 14 coach GAA special that I seen on the Ballina branch in September 1989 hauled by 135+188-12 Cravens and two steam heating vans-the biggest passenger train I had ever seen... great memories....

  3. Evening lads

I finished the Mk2 Supertrain coaches yesterday and gave them a trial run behind locos 181+177,

    181+177.

I've also put together a four coach CIE mail train based on the one that used to operate between Dublin and Cork and Dublin-Galway during the 1970s-1990s,

As a bit of a novelty I bought the Hornby operating mail coach and repainted it into black and tan livery along with a Bachmann TPO coach,

The train has two mail coaches (2976+2977) a Cravens passenger coach (1515) and a BR type steam heating van (3177) hauled by 160+156

Passenger accommodation was also provided on some mail train e.g 05:50 Dublin-Cork,15:00 Cork -Dublin,

I've also uploaded two videos to YouTube of the mail train picking up and dropping off mailbags at speed,

    Here are a few photos....

160+156 haul the mail train passing the Mk2 Supertrain.

The mail train stops at Central station for a crew change.

  4. Jnb would you know what livery the Asahi tanks and the 20 foot flat (if it was in a special livery ref spark proof brake blocks) and do you have any pics you could share?.

    Many thanks in advance.

Hidden-agenda-the IRRS journal of February 2006,No.159 contains an excellent article and photos-"Past Scenes-Freight that was",on page 408 it has a rare colour photo of the Asahi liner hauled by 042 in the loop at the Hill of Down which shows the Asahi tanks in the red/silver livery,

As far as I can remember that liner was used for an emergency exercise in Ballina at that time,as there are no bogie wagons next to the loco, only a two axle barrier wagon, then the chemical tanks.

  5. thanks tt - did it happen in the train care or p/w depot?

On the exit of the train are depot-blocking in several ICRs that were due to go to Dublin for evening services

Check out the rail safety commission website,

It has more detailed information on the accident,

    and exactly where it happened....

  6. Set 33 actually :-)

Set 33 was involved in the underfloor fire in coach 22633 last September 2011 near Athenry-and has only recently entered traffic with a refurbished First class,

Check out the Wanderers website for details etc.

  7. LADS ' date=' SAW THE FOLLOWING ARTICLE IN AN OLD INDEPENDANT NEWSPAPER ABOUT A DERAILMENT LAST JANUARY IN THE TCD IN PORTLAOISE. ANYONE KNOW HOW IT DERAILED?

    Monday September 27 2010

'THREE new rail carriages costing €6m will have to be repaired at a cost of €350,000 after they were derailed in a depot.

The accident happened when the carriages were being moved in the Iarnrod Eireann rail depot in Portlaoise, Co Laois.

No one was injured in the incident, which occurred last January.

But the Irish Independent has learned that the final bill for the repair of the damaged undercarriages in all three carriages will run to €350,000.

The repairs are due to be carried out in the coming weeks after a company was selected to do the work, following a public tender.

An Iarnrod Eireann spokesman said yesterday there had been no technical fault with the train, but confirmed that the derailment took place during a shunting manoeuvre in the Portlaoise depot.

A total of 177 new inter-city rail cars were bought three years ago, replacing the older, slower trains. Each new rail carriage cost €2m'.

JESUS ....350,000 IS A LOT FOR A SIMPLE DERAILMENT DURING SHUNTING![/quote']

6 car ICR set 22037 derailed while travelling over a set of hand points,

The shunter moved the hand points while the train was stopped over the points with part of the train taking a different route to the one that was intended,

The set came back into traffic a few months ago.

  8. Thanks again lads-Now that i've got the hang of uploading videos.here is another featuring my ICR, a Mk4 pushed by 209,a Mk2 in the"Galway"livery hauled by 221 and 181+156 hauling a Supertrain liveried Mk3 set....

  9. Hi folks ' date=' new to this not one of you guys e.g: out photographing and chasing the railways but love the rail sites and pictures. I'll be on posting and that but not to yer level .... but anyway on the Nenagh-Limerick branch I've noticed me some very new white and black shiny signs that contain the letter V on them please please explain ?[/quote']

    Welcome to the site jhayes,

In answer to your question-the'V'boards are known as Vegitation boards and they are located at accommodation level crossings where the view from the crossing is limited,e.g on a curve

The local permanent way inspector normally monitors these boards from the crossing on a monthly basis-and if at any stage he can't see these V boards from a safe point on the crossing due to briars or small trees blocking the view, then a hedge cutting machine is brought in to clear the area,

The V boards were introduced by IE after an accident two years ago between a freight train and a tractor in which the farmer was unfortunately killed-and were recommended by the rail safety commission.

    Hope this answers your question.

Many thanks Gentlemen for your comments,

Baby GM-all of the workers are from the Bachmann Scenecraft range,

Lads,I've finally managed to upload some videos of the layout to Youtube-(if the above link doesn't work.then type in"Trains on Tara Junction"on youtube and see what you think..

  11. Thanks for the comments and the link to my layout thread from RM Web.

I am still a member on this site, but have not been on for a while, hence the belated response to the above comments!Must rectify that,as there are some great threads and many smashing looking Irish layouts, with Tara Junction always being a particular favourite of mine from the old forum.Amiens St,also on RM Web,is another layout I am enjoying the progress on.

Welcome to the site Hunslet 102,thanks for your comments about Tara Junction,

Your own layout is impressive-a nice era and lots of interesting locos and rolling stock, please post more pictures of the layout on here if possible,

I also like the backs of the terraced houses-and Adelade freight yard looks great with the containers, cement and fertliser wagons,

    Keep up the good work.

  12. The Sperry train is in Mayo today,

I managed to get it at a few locations in the County... here are a few photos of it in Claremorris,

All photos were taken with prior permission given and a valid PTS cert.

079 has propelled the Sperry train into the siding at Claremorris to allow 226 on the IWT liner to overtake and an ICR to pass also

One side of the Sperry wagon.

And the other side-the monitoring/measuring equipment is located in front of the bogie of the wagon.

  13. It was a great day at Dun Laoghaire yesterday,

Anyone who can should head there today,

It was a pleasure meeting up with Anthony,Fran and Paul R along with many others,

Highlight for me of course was the 071/112 at Paddy Murphy's stand,Paddy being his usual helpful and courteous gentleman that he is,

Layouts were top class-Dorset Jctn being my favourite,

Well done to all concerned-roll on October....

  14. Well worth investing in when these School buses are re-released,

I was lucky the first time around...

Here are a few on mine on my layout-ideal for any Irish 1970s-1990s themed layout....

    Long version-plated front

    Short version-original front,small windscreen

  15. Evening all,

I had a spare set of Lima Mk2 coaches left on a siding on the layout,so I decided to repaint them into CIE Supertrain livery, three coaches were shunted from the paint shop earlier by the RPSI loco B141 and left for inspection by the works manager on road no'2 beside the carriage valeting plant,

Super standard coaches 5101 and 5102.

    5101.

Composite coach 5151 being examined by the works manager,

Still in the paint shop are another standard coach,a dining coach and an EGV.

Minor finishing work and transfers have still to be applied......with out road trials after that.

  16. Irish models have certainly came a long way since the CIE liveried Hymek and Class 33,and of course the Slainte express....

We had the Lima 201s 11 years ago...what can we expect in the next 5-10 years?????

Thank you to Paddy Murphy for upgrading the Irish model scene.

  17. Great piece of modeling history, who'd have thought of that.

Saturday 17th August 1991, I remember that day well, 191 was the Midland pilot in North Wall, it shunted the Sligo liner earlier that morning, but its that crucial final hour 15.00 / 16.00 that remains a mystery to this day, 1 of the greatest gricing mysteries of our time, around 13.00 it was parked up beside ''the huts'' in the Midland, I actually heard it depart NW via Newcommen @15.35 and thought it strange, next morning it was in the Sunday paper ''runaway locomotive crashes at Clonsilla'' meself & the Wife take a drive to Clonsilla, loco 161 was on site with the steam crane lifting poor 191 off the buffers, within a short time after that incident loco 161 was also withdrawn totally unconnected with this incident, some say it was tainted with bad luck from 191, think about it, turn de 6 upside down, what do ya get, I know, its scary, very scary, what happened to 191, the rumours have done the rounds over the years with 2stories, but tis still a mystery.

    Regards

    hg

Great info there, thanks hg for sharing that,

161 was the first loco that I got a spin in from Ballina-Claremorris and back in 1988,a great day,

    Thanks Sulzer201 for your comments.
