  1. If by green ones you mean the Dublin based heritage set, which is mostly green, then the answer is yes. They ran together until the heritage set was withdrawn in 2010. There was also two green cravens in a temporary livery for a while (1529 & 1539) Then there is the Whitehead based MK2 set and the cravens have not run with those, while the couplers and brakes are compatible the the gangways are not.

  2. there is a bit more detail here

    Public Transport

My top priority over the next few years is to rapidly increase investment in public transport while also increasing public transport services. Next year, I will invest over €400 million in public transport infrastructure, and this will rise to over €500m in 2019, over €700 million in 2020 and almost 1.1 billion in 2021. That is a four-year capital envelope for public transport of over 2.7 billion euro. It represents a 275 percent increase in investment over that period; and it is a clear signal of the importance the Government is putting on providing good public transport. I am particularly pleased that this substantial allocation allows me to invest in a much needed, fundamental overhaul of the bus network in Dublin, which will make it faster, more reliable, convenient and affordable.

I am allocating more than three-quarters of a billion euro for the BusConnects programme; a transformative investment package that will finance new and expanded bus routes and greatly improve bus access through and around the Capital. This programme represents the most integrated investment programme ever undertaken in bus transport in the Capital. It recognises that we need to do much more that simply add more buses to the existing network, with all of its inherent bottlenecks and other constraints. It is about adding more buses to a system that is reformed to ensure that it flows better, so that we actually carry many more passengers and get them to their destination quicker.

In relation to public transport services, in 2018 we will be providing an 8 percent increase in overall funding to support Public Service Obligation services. This will enable the continued delivery of socially necessary but financially unviable services throughout the country. Such PSO services have grown in recent years, and the increase in funding in 2018 is a cumulative increase over three years (2016-2018) of €75 million, or 36%.

The 2018 funding will also facilitate some further expansion, including the commencement next year of the planned roll-out of bus market opening, part of which will involve increased frequency on a number of core routes.

Alongside this, Rural Transport services that respond to local needs have also increased and we will continue to support these through enhanced funding.

With regard to rail, there will be over 680 million euro capital investment in additional rail infrastructure between now and 2021. This will deliver additional Luas capacity on top of the soon-to-be complete Luas Cross-City project, which will be a hugely beneficial addition to the public transport system in our Capital City. This amount will also help fund additional trams and longer trams across the entire Luas network. It will also fund the City Centre Re-signalling Project to improve speeds through the central Dublin part of the mainline rail network, and a new Central Traffic Control Centre which will enable the DART Expansion Programme to progress, and it will help improve national rail movements too.Additional funding will also increase the rail fleet and allow further progress to be made on the electrification of both the Northern rail line to Balbriggan and the Maynooth line. Further funding commitments for electrification of the Kildare line to Hazelhatch as part of Dart Expansion will be considered in the context of the 10 year capital plan. We are continuing to invest strongly in maintenance and safety projects to keep our national railway system safe and effective.

With today’s 4-year capital envelope, we are progressing preparation of the Metro North; construction work on this project will start in 2021, with passenger services starting in 2027. The 10-year capital plan to be published in the coming months will include the funding for the period to complete this significant addition to public transport. I also expect to include a number of other significant major investments in that forthcoming 10-year plan.

Transport is not just for the able-bodied, every citizen must be able to avail of public transport with as much ease as possible. To that end, while all accessibility is designed into new public transport projects, I am also providing multi-annual funding of almost 30 million euro over the next four years for retro-fitting of older existing public transport facilities to improve accessibility. This effectively doubles the previously planned investment amount.

The RPSI are delighted to announce the arrival of a limited edition run of our Cravens coaches in model form. Produced in 1/76 scale, the limited edition pack feature open coaches 1505 and 1532 along with snack car 1508. The models will only be available as a complete set in their own specially commissioned box. All funds raised from the sale of these coaches will go towards the purchase of a water bowser truck for our steam operations with any remaining funds going to support the restoration of our 121 class locomotive 134.

This production run is limited to 250 units and are sure to be popular with modellers/collectors and supporters of the RPSI. It would be the intention that should these models sell out there will be a subsequent production run of three further open coaches. This will allow people to create and authentic length train of RPSI Cravens coaches. The cost for the limited edition pack will be €159.99. It would be the intention that these models will be available for purchase on the upcoming Munster Double railtour on the 14th of October.

Details and availability of the models for general ordering and sale will be confirmed shortly.

The RPSI would like to acknowledge the great assistance from Paddy Murphy of Murphy Models in the creation of these models and thank him for his ongoing support of the RPSI.

  5. So instead of the new points and signals being mechanical they would now need to be digitally controlled effectively.

    Thats pretty much it

is there any effect on the wagon works, gantry siding or storage sidings on the approaches to the station or will all of these be resignalled?

As far as I know the layout will remain the same with the exception of straightening platform 3. The signals are being replaced with new led heads but the positioning should be the same.

  6. You're saying that there are barriers to reopening Foynes, or not?

I would not be one bit surprised if IE did something was fine to prevent any reopening!

Currently Foynes and Castlemungret are disconnected at Limerick Check and have been for some time, to reopen you would need new points and signalling (not to mention a complete relay of the line). After these works you would still need new points and new signalling just controlled from a different place.

  7. They are closing Limerick station Cabin and Check Cabin and merging them into a single computer based control system to be located in one of the old offices, which will presumably be relocated to the new signalling center to be based in Heuston at a later date. Platform 3 is to be straitened out and relayed and I believe they will be demolishing check cabin. There is no provision for Foynes or Castlemungret in the works but there is also barriers to adding them later if required. They are also planning work on the Shannon bridge in Limerick.

  8. Some information for any photographers who may be out and about over the weekend, any questions please feel free to ask

and while I hope I don't have to say it to you guys, please don't trespass on the railway:trains:

  12. Im not so sure, there was a requirement to do a brake test , that requires the test to be performed in the last vehicle of a fitted train.

There is a requirement to perform a bake test (specifically a brake continuity test) between the front of the train, usually the locomotive and the rear of the last vehicle. Where the last vehicle is a brake van there is a brake lever and vacuum gauge in the guards compartment to allow this, where the last vehicle is a standard coach or freight wagon ect this is done via a device called a tailpiece. The tailpiece fits on the end of the vacuum hose and contains a vacuum gauge and valve to allow the brake test.

I am sure I have a picture of one somewhere, I will post it if I can find it.

  13. Well this is a quote from the recent e-bulletin

As for who thought it was a good idea  , probably the same people who wont put the Dublin based Facebook or twitter links in the email bulletins. or put any Dublin based contact details on the website.

There seems to be some confusion regarding the new website, especially in regard to accessing information not related to the museum, specifically membership.

Maybe the membership details could be easier to find; but currently they are at:

“About” -> “Become A Member” (here)

The designers are still working on the website and in the fullness of time we hope to make it so that the museum is part of the RPSI, and not vice versa. But at the present, the funders are insisting that the branding should be museum-related.

Note (1): The proposed Members’ private area is not yet running. Instructions on how to log in will be included in a Bulletin when it is available for use.

Note (2): The programme of events for 2017 is now available.

  14. The old rail fan news and old issues of 5 foot 3 are supposed to be coming back but no date (not even an aspirational date) has been given. The other information about locos and waggons is also supposed to return but in the meantime we are left with this mess which lacks some basic features like links to the Dublin and Belfast operations Facebook pages and twitter

Supposedly it was a rush job due to time tables being imposed by the external funding.
