Six wheelers in the black'n'tan era 1963-70

While ALL passenger-carrying ones disappeared in 1963, thus just missing the new livery, some six full vans survived. Two were withdrawn shortly afterwards, still light green - but would have run with black and tan bogie stock. Another one I suspect also remained light green. The other three (69, now at Downpatrick; 79 and another) definitely were repainted black'n'tan. The one whose number I can't recall was on the Ballaghaderreen branch when it closed, and also on the 1964 all-Ireland steam tour; I don't know what happened to it after that. The other two were to be seen in the mid-1960s on the Galway line with one (I think 79) a regular on the up day mail. Haulgae, of couures for these, would be any black, black and yellow or Crossley-era black'n'tan livery on an "A", or B121 / 141 / 181 types in the original black'n'tan, or a grey 121 too. They could have been hauled by the C class though these were rarely on passenger haulage after the West Cork closed.

By the time the AR (GM-engines) appeared, the last of these are gone. Obviously any supertrain or later livery on anything isn't historically accurate - though it IS your railway!

Based on this lovely shot by Roger Joanes, 1077 appears to be the one of the 1964 tour (possibly one of the most well-travelled Irish carriages as such, widespread as they were I doubt many GSWR vehicles would have got to places like Ardee).

They’ll look good with the infamous Tailte tours Bachmann/Murphy’s  K class.

Now you've given me an idea for a little headboard to go on my Woolwiches... if I only I knew the person who has the design for it though.

Niles, they only take the dough when they are ready to send and have checked with you that you still want them - READ THE SMALL PRINT!

Do you really think I'd give them £260 for something I won't see until I'm 78, if I'm spared?

Now you're all calculating what I opted for .......

Well there should be an addition to my Christmas Mail Train in 2023 (those of you with time on your hands can work it out!).

Now, where can I find a 2024 diary to remind me I need the money in my account!

As Ironroad said, well done for those who asked Hattons for them. "Ask and ye shall receive" - although I don't think it was quite what The Good Man meant!

True, but it's still got a strong bout of anxiety from it. 😁

  3. Found these while doing a bit of scanning this evening, stored ferts at Portlaoise PW depot, 14th October 2006. They were out of use by then, while not a close up it might give some ideas for those looking to weather theirs, the random 'patches' of faded paintwork etc.

Not very long -  was the 1st 141 to be stood down, moreso for parts, circa 1993/4. 191 was the final STIR loco after its little adventure to Clonsilla

The numberwanger in me twigged that 174 and 191 had something in common (and 125 already done).

  5. As one of the stallholders over the weekend, have to say we couldn't have asked for more. I know @Blaine & team were run off their feet but put on a top class show nonetheless. It was a great social event too, seemed to good vibes all round.

Having worked in the Commercial Events sector, I can confirm that venues like RDS, Convention Centre etc are likely to be well out of reach of the budgets of most voluntary organisations these days (In fact, I know of Event companies that would struggle to justify their hire).

Actually, I can think of at least one 'big business' that lost money on RDS events, and these would have had big sponsorship...

The original versions are plenty adequate. The only issue was the Lack of a speaker which is almost resolved now! I don’t even model the eras but if a 201, 071 were to be released, I’d take em. That theoretical mad Black and Tan 071 would have take the cake or points logo. With the 201 in silver/green along with that mark 4 set is the era which I have the nostalgic connection too (that might sound mad but the first time i used a train was in 2007!) Leave MM with the GM locos and IRM with everything else….for now!

We were reminded everyday that the A’s were coming and “once the’re gone, there gone!” and still some did not heed the warning

Or retro 071 with the modern green & orange logo... 😁

Has anyone got any photographic evidence for 076 & 086 having the small logo on the side?

not my snap but should suffice for 086 (Jim Ramsay on Flickr). I'm pretty certain I've seen photos of it in this guise in older Irish Mails (ITG journal).

Slightly off topic, but if railcars were the staple long before the end of steam, why do forum members bitch about the railcars of today, while calling them trams, yo-yo's etc?

Indeed, and the yo-yo thing doesn't even make sense. They go up and down? Like, every train?  🤷‍♂️

I'll admit ICRs don't do much for me as an enthusiast but can't fault them on performance and comfort. As much as I prefer locos, generally anytime I've got them on the morning Belfast lately we've got into Belfast ahead of time.

Yknow this is perfect marketing for selling models even though “it never ran like that” I’d argue running like that in preservation fits the bill

100%. Preservation/railtours have given rise to all sorts of weird and wonderful combinations that weren't seen in service. Be it 201s hauling laminates and Park Royals on transfers, double-headed 071s, Gs hauling ballast hoppers, 141s and Cs in multiple... It's all canon, as they say in fiction.
