  1. My brand-new 142 arrived today seemingly in its original packing but when I removed the plastic cover as I unboxed it, I noticed light engine oil on the plastic wrapping and on the plastic beneath one of the bogies. I'm presuming somebody got a little too enthusiastic with the oil in China rather than someone refurbished the loco and selling it on as new.

Can somebody advise me on whether I can just wipe away the oil on the exterior plastic or whether there is too much oil in the motor?

Can I run it in or will this shower oil all over the motor inside if there is an excess of it?

Eventually I'm going to DCC chip all of these locos but I hadn't planned on dismantling my new pride and joy so soon....:SORRY:

  2. If you cannot resist the urge then go ahead. Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do but eventually prices are going to come down as you already said. It is just a matter of time. The problem is how much the wait is worth to you in terms of your hard-earned cash. It takes just one thing to trigger a revolution and sounds like Hornby's product may be just the catalyst we're waiting for...

  3. Makes a lot of sense. It is remarkable that MM seem to have managed to sell over 10k locos in the past six years during the worst economic recession since the 1920s. If I understand it correctly the superb run of 141, 181, 071 and 201 locos only appeared on the market after Lehman brothers had collapsed in 2008 triggering the virtual collapse of most consumer markets. I've no idea how big the market is for Irish stock, but I guess most folk who have always wanted to own top quality RTR loco stock but could not get it before 2008 have probably bought by now.

Personally if the production numbers stack up in the future, I would be keen to collect some MM variants of 121 class GMs, especially 001 class MVs, park royals and laminate (stainer like) coaching stock in B&T and Snail green liveries. Some of these locos are available in kit form or as specialist collector items but at a rather high price and don't seem to come with dual bogie all wheel drive and all wheel pickup chassis like the MM GMs which run better over Peco point work than any models I have ever owned. The MM 141/181 locos are master pieces of micro engineering. Produce 001s and 121s of the same standard as the 071s and I'd guess a significant portion of the existing existing customer based would jump at them.

But that may be wishful thinking as newer modellers may be more interested in 22000, CAV Mk4, and 2800 type stock. Personally my modelling era interest is primarily the GM era of 60s and 70s. Personally I found the super train 'era' coaching livery rather bland and boring looking and the longer coaches don't fit as well on many model layouts (mk2 & mk3). At least the dual white stripes of the IE era gave coaches a visual lift which scales down better to models. As they say in the movies, the full size 201 class GMs never 'blew my skirt up' (if I had a skirt that is, or was Scottish). :) My loco interest ceased with the 071s. IMHO, silent DMUs, Darts and Luas aren't real trains! (running for cover now). There is nothing like the sound of GMs.

I'm completely with Noel on all of the points he raises in his post personally I would also jump at 121's earlier locomotives like a class laminates, Bredins etc. but also except his point that other modelers wish for more modern stock which goes back to my original post i.e. I think there is an increasing market for both newer and older models and we haven't even mentioned steam!

  4. Mark 2 Gen Van in intercity is nigh on impossible to get, the restaurant car is hard to come by & bachmann's auto ballasters are sold out to name a few Tom. i was referring to doing re-runs of models which have sold out or are running low as has been mentioned all the groundwork has already been done

Yup, all very hard to find.... looking forward to MM supertrain coaches

  5. The runs are limited, but on the other hand, all the hard work in producing those models, such as research, development, castings and so on has been done, which means that further runs of any given model can be produced in the future with little effort if the market demands it. In fact, extra runs of the 141's have already happened. A couple of model shops commissioned a batch of 171 after MM had released all that were planned, and then a further batch of 141 was produced after that loco was preserved...

That's what I was alluding to, all the tooling etc. should be there for a re-run. Who commissioned extra models? Were they disatributed under the individual shops logo, Bachmann, not MM I'm sure?

  6. I agree with DiveController on that one because there is only a limited run on some models but there are guys buying them up in the hope that they can make a hefty profit on them when they are all sold, preventing genuine modellers & collectors from getting any. Hats off to Paddy though as was said- for a one man operation he's doing an outstanding job & long may it last. Bachmann on the other hand can afford to take a punt & do re-runs. PIMP

So in support of your answer on this, posts on this site speak for themselves. When you look back over old threads you can clearly see that this is the case with some individuals gathering more than for individual layout or collectors use. Yes, we are all grateful to Paddy Murphy but I'm still collecting some of the old stuff for my own use and it can be hard to source at times

  7. Nearly all Paddys range from the cravens to the mk2's are available so hes producing the right amount . The lima 201's is possibly the worst example as they were available from 2001 to 2005 & they couldn t be given away. All the 201's are available bar maybe river shannon, all the 071's are still available , most of the cravens and mk2's. If your looking for aparticular loco or coach that isn t available buy the nearest one to it and get one of the lads to renumber or repaint it or do it yourself .

I'm not sure you're correct with regard to availability. When you say available, you mean in the used marketplace not new, where price would be determined by availability in the new and used markets

  8. Paddy may have been right a few years ago, but my customer database is 300 strong and there's quite a few of the 386 of you folk who have never done business with me (yes, yes, I know, I don't deal in anything built after 1970!). Not all the 300 are "active" but at best the marketplace is about 500?

It's going to be a difficult figure to estimate but that may have been the correct number several years ago and that number may have expanded spurred by the increased availability of Irish outline. Exposure is the key, I think:trains:

Which brings up the point of limited runs. I understand that it would not be wise to produce far more product than could be expected to sell in any given market but there are clearly items that are sold out and obviously in demand that have not had a second run for newer modelers. This happened with the original 201s.

Should new runs be larger if the modeling market has expanded and wouldn't it be good business sense to do some re-runs when design and tooling has already been made??

  9. The resources section is a "WIP" :) If I ever get the time to get stuck back into it, it will be cleaned up into something more readable for the gibberish sections :(

ok, Boss, I though it was already there just the 'link' was broken

  10. Haven't had any problems with private messages myself recently and we haven't had any reports of others having problems in a while. If someone is having problems with them they can just let us know and we'll look into it further for them :)

I got several ot them today.... but could someone look at the resources link or whatever if possible.....

  11. Given one of Model railways' urban myths is that at Colin Massingham's funeral the lid didnt fit on the coffin its a fair bet that the kit is a pile of "merde" as they say across the channel.

    He made the MTK stuff.

OK, understand your comments now..... maybe I'll start with a dozen... (not)

  12. Your first port of call should be Des Coakham's 'Irish Broad Gauge Carriages', which includes some CIÉ stock. It's been ages since I've looked through it, so I can't recall exactly what he covers in it.

Wonder if it covers the various Mark2s which are still an enigma for me.........?

  13. PMs are not working still? That would certainly explain some (non)events.

Could someone look at the resources section please while we 're at it. I can only see the first page then programming code on the subsequent pages

    Thank you

  14. MPD - motive power depot.

    MPV - multi-purpose vehicle.

    UTA - Ulster Transport Authority.

    NIR - Northern Ireland Railways.

    ..I think..

Not sure about DFD - Dublin Fire Department...?

Of course technically you would need to call this in MPD1 as Nelson is using MPD2 below for multipurpose diesel:D

  15. Just found an old thread on the lifting if the CBSCR. Very interesting details.

Anyone know how I can find a search term in a thread that is nearly 100 pages long? I can only click on the thread not on the page(s) of the thread in which the searched term appears:dig:

  16. Interesting. I, having had no particular idea in mind previously, have recently decided to try to do a layout based (loosely) on parts of the CB&SCR. I love some of the bridges on it crossing the River Bandon and the Chetwynd viaduct which I'll try to model at some point having no experience at scratch building. I'll look back through your lengthy thread but throw up a few pictures between builds if they're not on here.

  17. Thanks Noel

    2. Yes i know i ve enough 201's but theres a new arrival and the lima 201 is up for the IE treatment.

While the new one gets renumbered & renamed.

    3. Taras & timbers part 2 scratchbuilding

The new layout will be making an appearance at some stage too

Can't wait to see the Taras and timbers:trains:
