Northroader Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago I reckon France showed their Gallic insouciance over not being in the Final, “ who gives a sh** about third place”, allowing England to put four easy goals through, then went in at Half Time and got a rocket up their ar**. The second became a proper game, good to watch, and England got it. Phew!! 1

That was a real thriller of crazy football, relentless to the point of being demented. I regret not recording it whilst watching it, but I always say that this is exactly how football should be played. In the modern game, only women's professional football gets anywhere near to recreating it. At one point in the first half, the Dutch were 2-nil up against the Czechs and should have been home and dry. They lost! Ah, Euro 2004. One of my great claims to fame. Before the first match, I stated to a 'football expert' friend - "Anybody could win this, even Greece!" His response was "That is completely impossible!" two hours later and they had beaten Portugal in the first match - this was declared to be a bizarre and unrepeatable anomaly. Then, they went on to also beat them in the final. Whenever he has subsequently declined to believe me about anything, which is often, I remind him of my complete understanding of the football genre. I just regret not having any money on it... 1
