I reckon France showed their Gallic insouciance over not being in the Final, “ who gives a sh** about third place”, allowing England to put four easy goals through, then went in at Half Time and got a rocket up their ar**. The second became a proper game, good to watch, and England got it. Phew!!

His response was "That is completely impossible!"

two hours later and they had beaten Portugal in the first match - this was declared to be a bizarre and unrepeatable anomaly.

Then, they went on to also beat them in the final.

Whenever he has subsequently declined to believe me about anything, which is often, I remind him of my complete understanding of the football genre.

I just regret not having any money on it...
