Hello all,

I am new to the forum, and looking for a couple things…

I am very interested in the Tralee and Dingle railway, and its locomotives. I have recently seen videos of 16mm scale live steam Tralee and Dingle locos made by John Campbell. Now, most of these videos range from 8-12 years old, leading me to believe that the channels  they are on are no longer active, meaning my comments on said videos are pretty useless. I did some rooting around on Google, Facebook, all sorts of online platforms and I have found no traces of John Campbell or his models, except for a few old threads. Is anyone aware of how I can get into contact with John, or what details I could get about the models, eg price, availability, time to make, etc..

I would also be grateful to be informed of anywhere else I can get 16mm scale Irish locos? I may have seen a live steam Guinness brewery tramway loco floating around somewhere online..

Best regards

Make contact perhaps via Phil Parker who knows John Campbell. Phil has a blog -searching for something like ‘Phil’s Workbench’ will find it. From my own days as a 16mm modeller, I recall that his speciality is coal fired live steam. A basic off the shelf generic 0-6-0 live steam loco from a factory outfit like Roundhouse will cost around £1500. A hand built T and D steam loco by a master builder is probably heading towards or above 5 figures tbh. 16mm Irish locos are not common, largely because the prototypes were quite big units. Archangel used to do a Cavan and Leitrim 4-4-0T IIRC. Accucraft had launched plans for the same loco c2019 but I am not sure that production actually occurred.

Alan O'Rourke of New Irish Lines may have information on John Campbell "Halfinchacore Works"

There is a photo of T&D No6 in Nov 2011 New Irish Lines. He also produced models of the LLSR 4-8-0 and 4-8-4T

At the time I attempted to order a T&D 2-6-0T from John Campbell but he was not prepared to ship outside the UK and Ireland

I think the locos and stock were 15mm scale on 45mm gauge track which is correct for the Irish 3' gauge.

Accuracraft announced a 15mm scale gas fired live steam model of a C&L 4-4-0T aboyut 6 years ago, but never seems to have reached the production stage.

Best option to locate one of John Campbells Irish locos would be to reach out to Garden Railway specialist retailers and enthusiasts groups in the UK

Hi.  I would join the 16mm association, if you're on Facebook there is a group which is a very good place for getting answers.  16mm though was and probably still is very influenced by the Welsh narrow gauge. As has been said, compare a Tallylyn loco to a Donegal 5A, The Donegal engine isn't far in size from a standard gauge tank engine. I have asked for a 'Phoenix', but without the demand, there's not much chance.
