I an new to the hobby. I purchased 2X Jagerdorfer Rh 2070 locomotives (DCC). They have been unreliable in operation, start, stop, re-start with hand of god, stop again etc. I have cleaned the wheels and track a number of times but no difference.

Any suggestions as to cause of problem and hoe to solve it?

Welcome! 

Maybe run them in (even on DC) for an hour in each direction? If second hand they may have stiffened up a bit in storage?

New or 2nd hand?

As Bos says, Check the wheels, track and pick ups if you can see them for dirt and maybe use a bit of wihte spirits and a cotton bud to clean them up.

Maybe stick a vid up here too. Nice loco BTW to have.

Sound advice here from @BosKonay and @Georgeconna. It's likely that the pickups make their contact with the backs of the wheel rims so make sure to clean these as well as the wheel treads.

Thank you for your suggestions. I have tried all to no effect. The locos are still erratic. Stopping about 10 mm after starting. Also on occasion when selected to run (I have Digitrax DCC) the lights and sound both operate but when I move the speed handle to start motion  the loco dies. I purchased both new ex Germany.

any suggestions.

Some things to try;-

Is this happening with other locos? This would indicate the track or the controller is the fault!

Try running them on a friends layout.

Try running them on a separate/isolated track that the controller is only connected to.

Reset the DCC chips to the factory defaults.

Remove the DCC chips and run them analogue, if they run the chips are at fault.

Where bouts are you lad? Perhaps someone can help out locally?

Try turning down the Sound volume, I have had that on a previous loco where the sound caused the issue. I think it was a Bachmann class 47 , CV63. try dropping it down to a low value and then if it is ok raise it back in increments.

Thank you for all your suggestions. I am based in Bandon. I have been working on the problem with David Linfield but we have had no success. We will try removing the chip and see how they run on analogue.
