Hey folks,

 

Just wanted to drop a quick line to say am delighted to be a member on here - hope this is in the right section. From England originally, but have been living in Co. Kerry for the past 20 years.

 

Looking to get into this as a hobby full time now - had a huge collection of items when i was a kid, but it seems to have gone missing from where it was being stored in England after we moved over here, so have to start from scratch i guess. Have always been fascinated by trains and want to get back into it.

 

So, advanced apologies if i ask any daft questions. Any pointers on where to start? Resources to check out? Whats the best magazines, websites etc?

 

Already had a poke around here whilst i was waiting to be approved - have to say am astounded by the detail and such that goes into it - like having the plans for real life equipment to replicate it to the last detail. I know if you are going to do something you might as well do it correct (so i don't know why im surprised really) but wow. Thats the kind of thing i want to get into (i reckon i have a form of OCD for stuff like that at times).

 

How on earth do you even begin to make your own items??

 

Anyway, apologies for the randomness, have so many questions and want to dive right in, but know i have to start small.

You could start by getting a copy of 'Modelling Irish Railways' by Stephen Johnson & Alan O'Rourke, which is out of print but available on Amazon. I got a loan of this book recently and found a mine of information in it.

 

For engine and coachwork you cant go wrong referring to George Dent's books by Crowood Press - http://www.crowood.com he has about 4 publications out now and they range from simple model modifications, model spray painting and then major model modifications. Its a good range.

 

'Model Rail' magazine is a good mag to go for. They cover Irish trains and have a very helpful workbench area.

It's a bit dated now, from well before Murphy Models (tho before kit and accessory makers Model Irish Railways folded) but you may find some interesting tips here, including some early modelling articles by Steve Johnson, co-author of the modelling book mentioned by murrayec;

Hi there,

As murrayec says, model rail is a great magazine, but British Railway Modelling (soon to be re branded BRM) I also find to be very useful as a resource for tips and examples. Hope I helped!

welcome StrettyBoy...the best thing you did so far was to join the site! we all had to start somewhere, so start small and work from there....it is amazing how quickly your comfidence grows and the adventurer in you comes to the surface! the lads are great for tips and advice, so ask away no matter how daft - you want to read some of the stuff i asked when i started:rolleyes:
