Today's Irish Times -14/09/20

For those who have an interest in the longevity of our Transport Companies. 

McFARLAND, Sir John Talbot Bt; 11th September 2020, peacefully, at his home Glenburn Cottage Ballougry Road, Londonderry. Chairman of Mulhollands, drapers, and owner of the Lough Swilly Steamship Company.

John McFarland was the business brain behind the operation but he ran into difficulties in the early 1900s. First, the occupation of Lough Swilly by the British fleet seriously disrupted trade and destroyed his dream of building up the Buncrana pier to rival Greencastle. Second, a long drawn out High Court case over a relatively small amount of money (£233) taken by Messrs. Russell of Ballyare, Fanad also damaged the business. Russell accused the ferry service of not delivering their goods and mixing up invoices so that other companies received the payment due to Russel. 

 ** The McFarland Baronetcy, of Aberfoyle in the County of Londonderry, is a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 23 January 1914 for the Irish businessman John McFarland. He was founder of and a partner in the firm of McCrea and McFarland, engineering contractors, of Belfast and Derry, Chairman of Mulhollands, drapers, and owner of the Lough Swilly Steamship Company, and also served as Mayor of Londonderry. He was succeeded by his son, the second Baronet. He was a businessman, a Senator of Northern Ireland, Mayor of Londonderry, Lord Lieutenant of the City of Londonderry and an Irish Rugby union international. The third Baronet has been a member of the Londonderry Corporation and a Deputy Lieutenant of the City of the County of Londonderry from 1956 to 1982.

These are the details of his father who died in 1986 not his son who was born in 1927.

Checking the facts the LL Steamship Company was bought by the Railway company in 1923. This person was also the last Chairman of the Railway Company that was sold off to Pat Doherty who closed the Swilly down in 2014.

Terrible shame the company couldn’t have survived at least in part, maybe just the busier routes from Derry to Buncrana and Letterkenny.....

The company was struggling financially and when Pat Doherty bought the Swilly about 15vyears ago he had his own motives. Firstly he was happy to keep the busrs running as long he got subsidies from both governments. By 2013 both Ulsterbus and Bus Eirann were starting to operate into areas served by the Swilly. Secondly Mr Doherty is a property developer who owns Letterkenny Shopping Centre and the Swilly owned some well.located sites ripe for development!

These fellas are buying up the whole country for overpriced apartments............!
