  1. As a complete foreigner I must say that I had nearly the same thougts as Kevin when I visited the UTFM for the first time in last October. The fact that there is a folk museum which is even mentioned on signs along the platforms would have made it an Ideal welcome poit for the UTFM and the building would have made a nice in-situ-addition to the collection of buildings. I agree it is a very good development that the building is now safe, but in my opinion a great chance is lost. Gerhard.
  2. Hi, just found this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ultra-Rare-Irish-N-Class-By-Bachmann-Murphy-Models-CIE-Emerald-Green-VGC-/251213437244?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item3a7d7cd93c Are they really that expensive? What was the normal price at shops? This seller here has some UTA-Carriages. Are they prototypical? http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/sony_dj/m.html?item=400386820000&pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item5d38ea07a0&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2562 Cheers, Gerhard.
  3. Hi Rich, this should be the version that themodelshop.ie offers as a respray: http://www.themodelshop.ie/rpsi-cravens-coach--ex-cie-/gtm005pd.html Gerhard.
  4. Thank you very much josefstadt, that really helps. I think I got that wrong and you sure are rigtht concerning Loughrea branch. As I am still a beginner without the necessary literature and as it takes weeks to obtain packages from Ireland and UK I am still very uncertain about train formations. I now need to get in contact with John from Silverfox Models... Thanks again Gerhard.
  5. Hello, I've got some questions to the GSVs in protype: Do I understand correctly, that the rolling stock they were fitted to did neither have steam generators on the loco nor dynamos on the carriages? What interrests me especially is, if the GSVs were also used in summer times because of the need for electricity or if they were only used when heating was needed. In a video that was linked to from the forum some days ago a GSV was used end of May. Anoter Question is about the short trains consiting of one G class Loco and one craven. How did they get heat (and light?) into the coach? And finally: Did the dutch and the ex BR GSVs serve for the same purposes or were there differences in the kind of coaches they ran with etc.? Thanks in advance Gerhard.
  6. Hi folks, a few days ago I browsed through flickr, now I saw this thread here and thought it could be useful to add some links: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jncarter1962/8233749738/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/irishswissernie/5768602830/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/irishswissernie/5768059265/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/finnyus/8191962288/ Hope it helps a little bit. Gerhard.
  7. Hello, brake fluid indeed works quite well, but be cautious: Don't put it in too long; a friend of mine put some cases in for a week or so, after that they litteraly fell apart. Cheers Gerhard.
  8. Thanks for those that sent me a message, I now will obtain such a model. It is really great that people are that friendly and helpful here.
  9. Hello all, I now know it's a bit late, but does anyone of you have a 181 class 183 (IR point logos, dayglo panels, wheathered) for sale in new or similar condition (no damages, no cement on the body, no missing parts)? As I live in Germany I alas can not collect it in Ireland, so international shipping is needed. I would appreciate any offers with reasonable prices, please also note the shipping costs. An alternative would be 141 class 143 (also IR point logos an dayglo panels but not wheathered), but that was only my second choice. Thanks in advance Gerhard.
  10. Theme has expired, no more help needed, sorry to have posted here too early, thanks.
  11. Hi Broithe, thanks for that, I will follow the hints given there. Gerhard.
  12. Thank you all, that was quite helpful. I will have a look at ebay whether there are books on rolling stock for sale. That should help me further. Gerhard.
  13. Ah, thats fine. I also thought about asking that question and had a first try to find the answer in the older posts; good to have an up to date info now! Cheers Gerhard.
  14. Hello, some years ago, Bachmann edited green coaches with flying snail in his silver series. Could anyone tell me whether they are prototypical? Thanks in advance, Gerhard.
  15. Thank you all for your friendly welcome, that's really great. I made up a first thread about building a SSM kit on Monday. About the layout: This will take time, the plans are not yet drawn at all and we first need to make a concept what all should be integrated. I saw there once was an iriish railway station offered, but browsing throug the internet I realized that for the Clonmel station the main Building is not part of that offer. Any Ideas how to put together an ensemble that could be regarded as irish? About my nick: I also have one of those Sentinels, hence the nick name. I will show a picture when I manage to make one. Alas the masters of the exhibition I participated last weekend always turned off the light just a few minutes after the end of opening times so I did not have enough light to make pictures of it on a (continental H0) layout. I improved the outer apperance by replacing the couplers and by adding real coal to the tender openings which in my eyes needs to be done on nearly all steamers with open coal storage. To all of you that consider ordering one: The Sentinels are sent from Kernow, in my case the package just covered the original box of the model without any aditional smoothening material, which led to the loss of a sand box which I needed to reglue (no problem as the breaking point of the plastic was in an invisible place). What I am really unhappy about is the construction itself. The brake assembly consists of one part with four legs that are glued in one hole each at the bottom of the chassis. Because of that the brake assembly is not removable and the whole chassis must alwas remain together. It is not possible to take out the axles or have a look at the gear without destroying the brake-assembly. Maintenance hopefully is not necessary hence impossible. Just my 2 cents. So thanks again, Gerhard.
  16. Hi all, as I promised to try to post pictures, I now show you the result of my sundays work. These are my first steps to assemble an SSM etched brass kit I bought at Raheny. I had no experience in soldering such Kits so I thougt this rather square object would be a great opportunity to improve my skills. I surely will not solder all parts, but until now soldering worked quite well after the I could manage not to burn my fingers . I will update this thread when there will be visible progress on the project. Cheers, Gerhard. BTW: The platform etch is not yet fixed but only loosely put in.
  17. Hello all, a Friend of mine built some models from etched brass kits in On30 gauge some years ago which looked a bit strange but very nice. To be exact it were an articulated railcar from the former West Clare Railway and one of the 500s locos. A bit later he brougt along two bone-shaped looking orange locos in the "odd" scale of 1/76 and added some waggons with loads of what he called "kegs" on it as he must have seen it near Heuston station on Holidays. This year my girlfried kind of forced me to also have holidays in Ireland which was not the best choice for my wallet as, really by chance, at the end of it we realised there was a show at Raheny. As a result of that and several hours on the internet and reading books now I know a lot more of the bone-shaped locos which are clearly 141 and 181 class. I now can understand that the friend named above was proud to present me a new and longer bone, this time in blue (NIR) colour (112) a few days ago. He got al little bit jealous when I told him I had visited her sisters 8111 and 8113 in the Derry train station a few weeks before. Now I have fallen in love with the irish railways and we plan to model a little show-layout on an irish theme but this will take some time. As I found out many experts are in this forum and as its members in general are very polite, I decided to sign up, hoping you will give advice to a fellow model railroader from the contient, i.e. south-west of Germany. As I am not a native speaker I would like you to forgive my mistakes. Please be shure that I don't want to be rude or offensive but for a foreigner it is quite easy to insult someone without having wantet that. I also will try to post pictures or to describe my progress, becaus I also think that a forum lives from good articles. Best regards, Gerhard. P.S.: One first question: What is the normal way to show pictures here? Loading them up on imageshack and linking them?
