It's the lead they were after, to sell on as scrap metal.

I dare say that would be an absolutely microscopically tiny lunatic fringe.

Hard to find old photos of, and no offence to the inhabitants of such places, unimportant wayside stations as opposed to those at junctions and termini.

Early 60s(?) RTE van. EDIT: on second glance RE van presumably for broadcasts "down the country", may predate setup of the Telly Éireann? Quite a nice livery.

iirc this book has some info and photos, think one was a Sulzer in silver at Attanagh. Hard to find as it's long out of print, IRRS library should have it as would libraries in the Tipperary area. http://www.industrialheritageireland.info/BookReviews/Railway/Signalman’s Memories Railway Life in Rural Ireland.html -
https://www.clareecho.ie/planning-bid-for-first-section-of-west-clare-greenway-expected-in-q3-2026/ I guess this is another nail in the coffin of the West Clare Railway project, the current greenway mania. Apart from the photo opp, no mention of the railway or of any accommodation for same.

Thankfully, they're Nordie things, my wallet is safe. For now! -
Way earlier than that. Did a little digging, Murphy Brothers Limited changed name to Murphy & Company Limited in 1909 upon the death of one of the brothers, it seems it did not last too long more after that due to poor management. The wagons themselves may have ended up being sold off to one or more of the railways upon the demise of Murphy & Co. Ltd., most likely the GS&W, the ornate lettering disappearing under a coat of generic goods wagon grey.

A similar design to that of the MGWR, imagine it was for the horse 'n' hounds set. Horse boxes here were quite possibly the very last vehicles to use oil lighting, long obsolete in passenger stock, for internal lighting.

Interesting not-so-early Irish Railway photos

CSE Carlow and its denizens were rather camera-shy. -
Getting my hands on an identical one to key in first post, also stamped GSWR. Have a brass version, unstamped, still trying to figure out what the little spigot is for. Possibly for gas supply. The smaller one appears to match those used for opening up the globes in gas lit coaches.

6-wheel coaches reduced to 4 wheels - when and why?
cheesy_peas replied to Mol_PMB's question in Questions & Answers
At a guess I'd say it was for the odd excursion to Courtmac or Macroom where lots of things were prohibited from travelling over and the native coaching stock was life expired. Make do and mend stuff. -
Interesting Early Irish Railway photos
cheesy_peas replied to Westcorkrailway's topic in General Chat
Was thinking possibly a Coast Guard wagon, but again you'd want lighter wheels when you're in a hurry. It's definitely not agricultural, some sort of specialised work cart. Perhaps council owned. -
CIE 1950s light green - preferred commercial paint shade?
cheesy_peas replied to Mol_PMB's question in Questions & Answers
Even with all this RAL standardisation, different batches of what is supposed to be the same colour may appear different when applied. -
CIE bulk grain vans - a study of the variations
cheesy_peas replied to Mol_PMB's topic in General Chat
Re the original Ranks grain wagons, when did they lose the Ranks Ireland branding? Were they red at some point? Saw a photo of a red version somewhere. -
"Voiding the Warranty" - Mol's experiments in 21mm gauge
cheesy_peas replied to Mol_PMB's topic in Irish Models
Possibly dating pre 1922, British ensigns and stars and stripes? An advertising sign from an auction plus two spotted at a long closed agricultural store premises in Co Kerry. -

One series of IR/IE era white/orange/black nameboards were reversed, English above Irish, an error by the signmakers I'd say. -
I imagine the choosing of Sambo and Jumbo was from popular culture of the time; Jumbo the Elephant being world famous in the mid to late 1800s, he unfortunately (and ironically) met his end when a train collided with him and his remains were mounted and put on display by a certain PT Barnum. The Story of Little Black Sambo was a hugely popular childrens' book first published in 1899. Unusually for the time, the main character was one of the first black heroes in childrens' literature, a positive portrayal of black characters compared to contemporary books that regarded black people as uncultured and uncivilised, unfortunately the characters' names chosen were of course racial slurs.

Was the first CIE/pre RPSI iteration of 184 in lined green with cast numberplate an early example of painting a loco in "heritage livery" before that phrase was coined? I note that 90 was similarly treated around the same time, prior to being sited at Fermoy, afterwards "stuffed and mounted" at Mallow.
