  1. I believe its running in DC mode and you need to install a decoder.

if your controller has a dc channel it will run on that but beware that the noise is caused by the motor recieving a full track voltage whilst pwm is keeping it stationary and the motors tend to get quite hot as a byproduct of running in this state which can shorten their lives significantly.

    Most would not recommend it.

    Your post was clearly iCR-bashing.

I'm not super familiar with AI, but I'm sure you could train a freely available AI program like ChatGTP to analyse this thread for the data, asking it to calculate the probabilities, which would save you a fair bit of time.

@Sean is mad for AI, he gets moist just thinking about the rise of the machines, maybe drop him a message for some pointers.

not the best of photos but they get the job done lol

had not planned on running these for a little while -  now its a priority over the next few days 😁

Seems i still need a mk2d and another brake to complete the rake - when are these coming out? 🤣

    No, no, NO!

No pictures or videos of these coaches allowed on the forum for at least another few weeks, until mine arrive.

Anybody caught even hinting that theirs have already arrived will not only be banned for life, as will their children and their children's children, but I will personally throw eggs at your windows, too.

    🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

So, who has re-gauged theirs to 21mm?

Looking your way, @murphaph and @Horsetan!

Just you wait till I've had my dinner 😂

  5. Cant we stop counting rivets and just enjoy our high end high quality toy trains?

Oh no, the number doesnt match the tiny little vent that is invisible at more than 10cm away and the ladder is slightly wrong.

    THE ENTIRE PRODUCTION IS RUINED!!!

Here are the IR versions I picked up today (I posted these images on facebook earlier, but might be good to post them here also.)

Colour looks way better on these, I thought the pre production ones were a touch too red.

What we talk about here tend to models rather than toys. Very delicate.

Whilst i would normally mock people who people who post this sort of statement as in denial about their hobby men child, This is good advice to take onboard. it can be very easy to do a lot of damage to these models with even a modest drop and at that point it will be a write off for most people. if your son is already into models this may be a non issue but its worth consideration.

Wrong sound chip on that loco? better call wheeltappers!

It depends on wither you want sound or not. If not sound just motor DCC decoders than €20 for a basic Lenz decoder is more than enough. No need for ridiculous €35. If you want sound then your two choices are ESU LokSound5 projects from the likes of (http://www.wheeltappersdccsounds.co.uk/styled-5/index.html) or Zimo from Mr Sound Guy (website currently offline). Both of these have sound projects for nearly all the Irish diesel locos. I've equipped my MM 141/181/121/071/201 fleet with ESU projects designed by WheelTappers. I tried but dislike the generic vanilla projects designed by ESU themselves for Murphy Models and IRM, they were designed by people sitting at desks using library recordings of mainly US locos with now knowledge of how Irish Diesel loco's were operated and how they actually sounded. For me sound is half the equation, how these project drive prototypicaly is just as important. Sadly the generic vanilla ESU projects lack coasting and long distance braking like the real thing, so they cannot be driven as a real loco would have been. Personally I enjoy the challenge of bringing a model loco to notch 0 and applying brakes at the right time to bring a train to a halt a mile or two later correctly at the right place on a platform or in front of a stop signal. Shoving throttle to speed step 0 and the mode train stopping abruptly using only 18 inches of track is toy town and boringly unrealistic. Driving model trains like real trains is the fun.

Sure at that rate we all might as well buy a laisdcc for 12 euro and call it a day? Sure thats more than enough, no point in paying a rediculous 20 euros??

    Some things to note:

There seems to be 2 revisions of the MM121 chip as ive got  what i would consider to be quite a crap one  along with 2 much better ones that come with the high fi sounds that differ greatly from the first one which isnt great in my opinion

The A Class EMD chip was recorded off A39r in Ireland? It also has the most advanced function sheet of any other decoder ive got?

we are lucky to have a crossley chip at all and it has taken years to come up with a suitable solution that we were lucky to get at all?

ALL of the above chips are set up with proper momentum and braking? things which must be manually set up on the cheaper chips which usually come blank but may contain generic values at best?

Biggest tip I can suggest is be extra patient.

IRM's wagon packs are excellent value, and every Black Friday, they hit us with something even better.

Everything will be re-run eventually, whether locos, wagons or coaches.

Going even more buget, there is a thread on British locos that can be disguised as Irish locos here:

    https://irishrailwaymodeller.com/topic/11073-british-locos-and-stock-that-can-be-disguised-as-irish

Hatton's quite frequently have open wagons, closed vans, containers, Mk1 coaches, Mk2 coaches etc very cheap.

The other day, they had brand new Mk3 coaches for £15 GBP each.

All of the above would be ideal candidates for re-painting.

Bachmann N Class Moguls show up in SR livery and BR black livery for £50 to £80 at Hatton's from time to time. De-badge with a cocktail stick and you have a relatively Irish loco.

And, as you say, @leslie10646's wagons are brilliant value for what you get!

I guess there's going to be a trade-off between budget and realism, almost on a linear scale at the centre, so the budget you want to keep to will determine how realistic you can go.

@Sean posted a thread on budget Irish modelling, back in 2019 or 2020, prior to his workbench thread, but I can't find it at a glance.

One could also look for non-runners to repair, as in this thread:

    https://irishrailwaymodeller.com/topic/12359-wanted-non-runners/

I named that thread to my workbench 🤣

    LOL, phrasing!

    😂😂😂😂

you resurrected a 10 year old thread for this? 😅

Personally I found features i did not like in all of the commercially available options including the z21(price). so i haven gotten pretty deep into the world of DCC++ (not perfect either mind you).

take a 17 euro arduino mega clone,

    a 5 euro wifi card

and an arduino motor shield of which there are several different types starting at around a tenner (I like to spend a bit more for the official one but its not really needed) Theres also the DCC++ branded motor shield which was specifically designed for running model trains.

a new or old laptop power brick with a filtered output.(filtered is important)

wire that all together(no soldering) using provided diagrams and upload the software to the board from a pc using the provided installer.

you now have a base station that can be controlled by pretty much any wifi throttle, or you can hardwire one in or use JMRI etc.

to be super cheeky you can even drive it with the z21 app if you use JMRI 😅 -  get the full z21 experience for a DIY price.

Sounds kinda complicated but if you have ever built or upgraded a PC this kind of build would be no problem.

Eventually all that morphed into me being tired of using a phone/tablet and craving a bit more analogue feeling controls so i constructed my own throttle, which was abit more complicated but also  along the same lines as the actual base station build.

Considering the price, I have been able to build 2 of these systems and have left one permanently connected to either layout, when i turn on my throttle it will simply ask me which layout i would like to connect to and i can run either layout from that point on.

  11. try using addresspal for stuff like that and it should save a few bob.

if its free uk postage you will only pay 6 euro to get it into ireland. Youll probabaly have to pay the tax man another 6 or 7 euro ontop of that too but its usually a pretty quick service.
