  1. Back orders of MRJ now on there way to me, I just wonder if there would be enough interest to do a book on past Irish models and modellers, for me I know these people by name but it would be great to have more details of what they have done.

Apparently someone (somewhere online) said that a shunter will be making it's way to Maam Cross at some point...

Would I be correct in saying that it'll be this? Or will 230 be given a new lease of life? 😂

The attack on the train at Adavolye in 1921. My great Uncle, my maternal grandmother's youngest brother,  was on the train that was attacked. He was in the 10th Hussars and been providing the Sovereign's escort to King George V for the state opening of parliament in the north. My great Uncle was injured and later died some months later of pneumonia.

Horse traffic on the NCC. The NCC certainly did have horseboxes for the conveyance of horse traffic. There were point to point races held at Lisnalinchy in the 1920s on the Ballyclare Branch.

I have attached a couple of photographs, one by Des Coakham of the NCC V9 Horsebox. Bill Bedford did a brass kit of this wagon around 30 years ago. The Second photograph is by Henry Casserley of E1 0-6-0 No.53 at Ballymena in August 1930 with a couple of horseboxes on the drawbar. I believe they are GNR(I) examples.

I wonder if Bill Bedford still has them, I guess that as etching has changed, he might need to make some new etched masters.

Dave Walker - another pioneer. I had dinner with him once, in the company of Gordon and Maggie Gravett, plus Andrew Burnham of Continental Modeller. It was at the old St Albans show. Dave was into Gauge One by then and it was another opportunity missed. I sometimes think I must go around with my eyes and eyes closed!

Sometimes the name and a certain layout do not alway come to mind at the same time, had a similar experience at an exhibition with the late Ian Rice, I knew the face but could I remember his name at the time no how embarrassing that is.

I was lucky enough to see Richard Chown's Castle Rackrent in the flesh at a small exhibition in rural Perthshire, possibly Abernethy during the 1990s and the late David Walker's Killanney layout a Yorkshire Castle Rackrent offshoot.

I met Tony Miles at a Bristol exhibition in the late 80s and was invited into the operating well of the partially completed second Advaoyle layout.

Apart from his considerable technical/modelling ability effectively developing fine scale 4mm standards or P4 independently of the Model Railway Study Group, he seems to have had a great ability to recruit groups of like minded modelers to work on his two Adavoyle Layouts first on Merseyside, the Aberyswyth before finally settling in Ludlow.

Richard Chown a BR engineer likewise recruited a large team to regularly operate his Castle Rackrent, basically an Irish pre-amalgamation American style operating layout with several stations which could be arranged in different format for exhibitions.

I was inspired by Castle Rackrent ever since it appeared in the Modeller some time in 75-76 but never got round to building a successful Irish 5'3" gauge layout though I have managed to build a fair number of locos and stock during the last 40 odd years.

    Hi John

Thanks for that as it clears up one mystery for me, I have wondered for some time what happen to David Walker, so as he is no longer with us again I wonder what happen to that layout, I guess that unless anyone took an interest in it, it may well have ended up in the local council skip.

As for Richards big layout I don't recall seeing to many photos of it in full operation or any articles, I understand he used to produce a magazine about it, but again I have never seen any of those, I just wonder if there is enough information about his layout weather or not a a book like the white series from Wild Swan could be viable?

  6. Hi Guys

The other day I was looking at someones Blog on the internet and it happen to mention the late Richard Chown's layout Castle Rackrent, this in turn got me thinking I wonder what happen to all his 7mm Irish locos, rolling stock plus of course his layouts.

Does any one have that information or have anything to add to this?

No, but if there is, it's probably abroad (ie Big Island and beyond).

Let's see how quickly the Ffestiniog locos and stock sell out.

I was very tempted to buy one of each for my sons who spent endless holidays going up and down the Fest. They're lovely models, but they're SO small. The 15mm guy above showed how to do it.

It is a funny gauge 12mm you have the Irish/IOM 3ft gauge stock for 00n3 then you have HOm Meter gauge stock from Mainland Europe then you have HOn3 American Modelling using 10.5mm gauge.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3_ft_gauge_rail_modelling

I am not sure if you will ever get all three to work out of the box on the same gauge, we can but try, I have 4 Roundhouse HOn3 2-8-0 Tender loco kits awaiting building for 12mm gauge.

To be honest what we have kit wise is not bad and I would hate it if went down the same road that 009 is now going, so many good looking models but for their size dammed expensive in RTR. The down size is that the 009 kit manufactures are now also increasing the costs of kits.

Would there be much of a market for Irish narrow gauge in OO?

That I don't know but it is funny that die hard 009 modellers have all of a sudden started to think in terms of the new TT1:120  Hornby 08 diesel shunter loco as narrow gauge loco bashing (its not even released yet) but I have been told that pre-demand is very heavy for the model.

If Hornby continue to produce suitable 00n3/ TT1:120 size chassis's then why not, I have it on good authority that one 3D printer guy has a load of designs ready to go once the chassis becomes available.

What next IRM offering Reverse Mortgages for customers with mortgage free homes to by the latest models, when you pop your clogs IRM/finance company gets the house and model collection.

Retirement industry, private housing, the motor industry and model trains has always been tied up with finance.

Interestingly visited a model shop which had a large stock of second hand models, books and magazines (mainly model trains & diecast, nothing Irish!) owner said most of his second hand stock was from deceased estates.

Sadly a local Charity manager who knows I am in to all things railways has asked me to go and look at someones collection who has recently passed on, his kids where about throw it all in the skip, but I suggested they get someone in who can give them a fair price for it all, which they did, but now I hear the son thinks it is a pot of gold and is asking really silly money for some of the collection.

I have to be honest about this I don't have a clue who I could leave all my model railway stuff to or the book collection, as for the rest of it, I think it would be classified as old tat.

I’ve heard rumblings of what it could be from reliable sources. If what they say is true I’ll be buying a good few of em 😁

So when did you win the euro lottery if they are steam locos then 😆😂😂

About thirty across all the classes - U, S, V and VS ;)

This could be expensive then..... wait... I see my bankmanger has just told me I need to file for bankruptcy if I want every one 😆

Would be a shame if IRM didn’t exploit their livery wizardry to the full on any new steam class - a range of grey J15s is hardly a challenge for them… a nice blue 4-4-0 with a portion of sale going into 171’s overhaul appeal could be timely with lots of collector appeal …

So just how many blue 4-4-0 can you have?

  13. I was trying not to speculate on what it could be, but as hard as it is not to do so I would guess it is something which is on the network today, or may be the original DART sets? As much as I would love a steam loco I can't see that happening, could be the C class locos to follow on from the A's

    🤔
